Rockets from Lebanon hit Israel

It was still not clear who had fired the
rockets into Israel from Lebanon [AFP]

Several rockets fired from Lebanon have hit northern Israel, Israeli police say.

At least three rockets landed in the town of Nahariya, about 8km south of the Lebanese border, on Thursday causing slight injuries.

The attack was followed by reports of a second missile strike, but officials later said it was a false alarm.

The Israeli military fired mortars into southern Lebanon in response to the initial attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera's correspondent in southern Israel, said analysts were suggesting that the rocket attack could have been carried out by Palestinians in southern Lebanon.

She said the firing of rockets from Lebanon "could mean the opening of a second front" in the war on Gaza which has left at least 700 Palestinians dead.

Military alert

The Israeli military has been on alert in the north since it intensified the Gaza offensive, which it says is aimed at stopping rocket and mortar attacks by Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip.

"We took into account there would be an attempt by Palestinian groups to express solidarity," Shalom Simchon, an Israeli cabinet minister, said.

Lebanon is home to more than 400,000 Palestinian refugees, according to UN figures.

Al Jazeera's James Bays, reporting from northern Israel, said one of the rockets hit a retirement home.

"The residents of the home are very distressed by what has happened," he said. "People here haven't got to the stage they have in the south where many people have left their homes."

Hamas denial

The Palestinian Hamas group, which has been targeted by the ongoing Israeli aerial and ground assault on Gaza, denied it carried out the attack from southern Lebanon.

"Hamas is pursuing its combat inside Palestine and our principle is not to use any other Arab soil to respond to the occupation," Raafat Morra, a Hamas spokesman, told the AFP news agency.

Tarek Mitri, Lebanon's information minister, said the Hezbollah movement, which fought a war with Israel in 2006, had made it clear it was not behind the rocket attack.

"Hezbollah has assured us that they remain committed to stability and Resolution 1701 and that is a euphemism for saying they are not involved," he said, referring the UN Security Council resolution that ended the conflict.

The last time Katyushas were fired from Lebanon was in June 2007. Hezbollah denied responsibility and Israel blamed an unnamed Palestinian group.

Andrea Tenenti, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, told Al Jazeera it was "taking immediate measures to identify the perpetrators of the attack".

"Additional troops have been deployed on the ground and patrols have been intensified across all our areas of operation to prevent any further incidents," he said.

Conflict warning

On Wednesday, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah, warned that "all possibilities" were open against Israel as he gave a speech condemning Israel's offensive in Gaza and voicing support for Hamas.

"We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in"

Hassan Nasrallah,
Hezbollah leader

About 1,200 mostly Lebanese civilians were killed as the Shia Muslim movement fought the Israeli military.

Addressing tens of thousands of supporters via video link at his stronghold in Beirut's suburbs, Nasrallah said: "I say to [Ehud] Olmert [Israel's prime minister], the loser, the vanquished in Lebanon that 'you cannot overcome Hamas or Hezbollah'."

The comments marked the first time he has spoken so openly on the possibility of a renewed conflict with Israel since the war in Gaza began on December 27.

Nasrallah warned that the 2006 conflict would be "but a walk in the park" compared to what awaits Israel if it launches a new offensive on Lebanon.

"We have to act as though all possibilities are real and open [against Israel] and we must always be ready for any eventuality.

"We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in."

Together as one can evil be defeated.
Only if all Middle Eastern nations unite and fight as one, will the evil of Israel be stopped in its tracks. If they fail to unite, they might as well just sit back and wait for their turn to be destroyed by the Zionist aggressors.

Rockets on N. Israel
Hezbollah is being provoked. By watching the carnage in Gaza anyone with blood running trough their veins sits there feeling powerless about what is going while the Israeli war machine kills aimlessly and relentlessly. Israel could be lying right through it's teeth and use a "Gulf of Tonken" strategy. So let's see what Hezbollah says. The Western media are already splashing it all over the place that Israel was "attacked". So before they get too excited let us just wait and see.

Rockets from Lebanon
Rockets being fired from Lebanon into Israel is not helping the situation in Gaza. If people in Lebanon really want to help, encourage Hamas to accept the truce proposal by Egypt and France. The firing of rockets could only exasperate stability in the region.

Nasrallah, are you willing to sacrifice the souls and the lives of innocent Lebanese? What for? The Gaza attack wil not stop because of Hezbollah rockets, but many Lebanese will be hurt (Hezbollah and civilians). Did you forget the death toll of 2006?

Nasrallah is willing to sacrifice ... lebanon - not himself of course
"We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in" says Nasrallah. Did Nasrallah ask the citizens of Lebanon if they share his willingness to sacrifice their "brothers and sisters and children" in a new war? I wonder.

Whether Hezbollah did this or not let's not forget that Israel started this and it is Israeli leaders that all must be brought to justice. They are the perpetrators of state terrorism and it's impossible to expect no reaction from the resistance groups in the region. It is called provocation. At the expense of thousands of lives in Gaza.

Attack on Gaza
First of all its rude to call him Nasralla. He is an educated Islamic person. What happened today and in the past, always started from Israel as they have to prove their weapons. If you read the article, he clearly said Hezbolla will sacrifice their own souls to protect our people whether Muslims or Christians or whatever relegion. Gazans will keep defendirng themselves! And we all should too!

Only God can save Israel now!!
It is a shame the so called developed Western world thinks it controls the fate of the world and millions of people. The killing of innocent Gazans would not help anyone, but it'll bring more misfortune to the Israelis and the Jews in the long run. Never forget that history repeats itself. When the Jews were hammered in World War II, the world condemned it. Now after getting power and foreign assistance they are misusing it. Only god can now save Israel and the Jews!

Second front
Nasrallah, you should be helping with the peace process rather than creating another war zone. Everyone wants this bloodshed to end. Why on earth do you want to sacrifice all your souls, brothers, sisters etc. again? Violence is not the answer.

Israel a terrorist state
Israel is just taking the rocket attacks as an excuse to inflict attrocities on the Palastenians. It is Israel who is the aggressor and the organised terrorist state. The reason for the rocket attacks is the continued opression of the Palastenians, inhumane treatment, blockades, regular incursions in Gaza, and killings, murduring of innocent civilians. This is not only the war of Hamas, it is the war all Palestinians and the Muslim brotherhood.

The ASIs mindset
This Gil guy from Israel really has nerve. "Did you forget the death toll of 2006". Listen to the threatening undertones of the Israeli mindset. See, that is the problem. It's the mindset of the people that believe they are allowed to take people's lives away at will! It's sickening. Hamas and Hezbollah exist for a reason - State of Israel. Get rid of apartheid and such groups will not even need to exist. Bravo Gil! Bravo Israel! Who's Goliath now?

Why the hatred?
I wonder why the hatred for a people is so strong that it runs for generations? Why can't the Arabs and the Israelites live in peace? Why should we be talking of sacrificing ones brother or sister for "something" you believe in? To be a good leader, you have to lead by example. If anyone believes in any thing so strongly that it involves sacrificing innocent lives, that person should lead by example- sacrifice himself first.

I do not pretend to know anything about what is going on in Gasa. Who benefits from all this blood shed? Hamas, Hezbollah, or Israel? I'm sure someone does, but probably not any of these people. Even Isaac & Ishmael came together at least on one occasion. They came together because of an event that changed both nations namely, the death of Abraham. What cataclysmic event will bring these two great nations back together? I don't know the answer but I pray that it won't come to that.

israel-palestine
Dear all, it is known that human mind stands for justice but is misled by media prejudice. It is not a matter of Palestinians not allowing Israel to live. It is Israel who made Gazan life hell by continous siege inspite of the ceasefire agreements that Hamas stuck to. Because of the treachery and bullying attitude of Israel Hamas did not renew the ceasefire. If Palestinians are allowed to live peace there will be peace in Israel. Remember Israel is only 60 years old and occupies Palestinian land.

GAZA
I think what is currently happening in Gaza is absoultely criminal. How can the West, and in particular, America justify this war? The palestinians are being murdered. Israel won't stop until their agenda is acheived, and after that they will want more. This unfortunately is the nature of the Zionist. It sadens me that America's policical decision are not in the hands of its president. This is not democracy but is racism at its worst.

we are ready to sarifice
It is not only people of Lebanon who are willing to sacrifie their souls. We muslims around the world are also ready to sacrifice our souls for the Gaza people. But, there is no need for that because Palestinians themselves are enough to defeat the Zionists. They will win finally - no matter how many lives more they have to lose.

Reponse to Provocation
I would like to comment on the feed back that Mohannad from the UAE made. I speak about provocation. Does he not think that by firing rockets into Northern Israel from Lebanon is a provocation from Israel to react. Funny how everyone is going on about how Israel is using undue force! I am not condoning the dealths that have occured, but if Hamas and Hezbollah had more advanced weapons they would not use it against Israel alone.

Martyring ones neighbor
To all pro-Hamas/Hezbollah readers: Why is the leadership of these Iran-backed terror groups obsessed with sacrificing its "brothers and sisters, children." or at least those of the Gazans and Lebanese? Is it Islamic culture, Arab mentality, or plain hubris. Iran does not have the money to rebuild Lebanon. This time oil is too cheap. The world does not have the money to rebuild Gaza, the economies are depressed Stop the insanity. Stop the rockets, fools.

enough is enough
It is this simple. Innocent lives are being butchered, and at the same time a propoganda war is being led by the Jewish state and its allies. What the people in the West are being told lies and deciet. Thanks to Al Jazeera we are seeing it all, live. If I had a rocket next to me, enough to reach Israel, I would have no hesitation on using it. I'm tired of watching Israeli spokesperson telling the ugliest of lies on TV.

Gaza Conflict
Israel only knows how to kill civillians, women and children. More Palestinian babies have died than Israeli soldiers. Who are the real victims? Can't the world see that and stop the criminals? Palestinian's have no food, water, sanitation, medical supplies and many other necessities. If the whole conflict was the other way round, where the Israel's were in Palestinian shoes, would the world still be sitting back and watching? I dont think so!

Israel cannot allow itself to fall even once
If Hamas or Hizbullah didn't hide behind their own civilians, they would not exist. Provoking Israel will lead to civilian deaths, but Israel will not let itself fall even once. It can't, if it wants to exist. Accept them to the neigbourhood. Stop missiles.

Yariv, let me remind you that Nasrallah offered and lost his own son in the fight against Israel. You ask whether he requested permission from the Lebanese people before offering thier sons, daughters etc. If you take some time away from CNN and observe what is actually taking place in the region you will realise that the people of Lebanon majority of whom were Shia Lebanese living in Southern Beirut and Southern Lebanon, who lost everything in the war, are willing to die for this cause.

Despite Israel's history and beliefs of their right to be in the Middle East, I strongly believe that if they dropped their arrogant conditions (Sha3b Allah Al Mokhtar) and accepted to equally share the land with Palestinians we will not be in as complicated situation as now. It is easy for you to say that, living all the way in Australia. Did you forget all the wars fought in history, where Arab nations managed to unite against Israel. And what did that cost us? The loss of more land and more civilian bloodshed. War is not the answer.

Joe, this is ridiculous. Let us assume Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Egypt and the Palestinians (inside and outside Israel) will attack at once. How they will attack? rockets? How many Israelis will die? 100,000? Think of how Israel will retaliate to such offence and what will be the grim results. Stop believing Hamas/Hezbollah leaders who promise graveyards to Israeli soldiers. Most of the Arabs leaders knows well that those organization lead the Arabs to misfortune.

Need to Open A 2nd Front
Alhamdulillah, Even a small response coming from Lebanon shows how much anger and frustration Israel created during last 13 days with its barbaric attacks on Gaza strip. Not only as a Muslim, but as a human being we must strongly condemn Israel to stop that barbarian attacks. If not unity is the best solution in current circumstances. Hezbollah should open a second front from Lebanon to divide the Israeli attention from Gaza as more than 700 innocent people have been killed so far.

It is a shameful worl. So many innocent people are being murdered and the leading nations of the world have done nothing to stop this act of terrorism! You people against Hezbollah politic have to know one thing concerning Sayed Hassan Nasrallah. His son was killed during a war, so when he says we are ready to sacrifice our souls, our children, he was thinking of him too. You did not think before you wrote that comment did you? what were you thinking by saying that a second front should be opened? Only more people will die from such an uneducated comment. How many more people do you want to die in this conflict? All that will happen is that Israel will shift some of the attention from Gaza and call more reservists to fight on that front and more blood will be spilt and more bitterness will be created within the Middle East.

Dear Joe from Australia How can you call Israel "evil" after what Europians did to Aboriginals? I'm not saying that Israel in 60 years of it's existance didn't make any mistakes. Citizens of Gaza and the West Bank were mistreated since 60. After 40 majority of Israeli's understand and agree that the only way out is a two state solution and some kind of resolution of the refugees problem. But we are surruonded by organizations like Hamas and Hizb'allah who seek our extermination.

Solution is easy
If Hamas wants Israel to stop, why do they still fire rockets? Israel repeatedly stated that they will stop attacks when Hamas stops firing rockets. But Hamas still fires rockets, although this does not hurt Israel very much. It is completely senseless to still fire small rockets over the border, as this makes Israel continue to fire. More children will die because of this senseless rocket firing. I cannot understand why they simply do not stop firing. Enough is enough. Think of the children!
