Taliban claims helicopter attack

The Taliban in Afghanistan says it has shot down a US military helicopter.

Zabihullah Mujahed, a Taliban spokesman, told Al Jazeera that three US soldiers were killed in the incident and another two injured on Saturday.

The US has admitted there was fighting in the area, but denies that any of its aircraft were brought down.
Dhabihullah Mujahid, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the region, reported the Taliban as saying they brought the helicopter down in Konar state in eastern part of the country.
A US forces spokesperson in Konar, which is to the east of Kabul, said that clashes had taken place and the US warplanes had carried out bombing raids.

The state of Konar lies on the Pakistan border and has seen fighting between forces opposed to the US-backed government and US-led forces in the past few years.

In 2005, a US helicopter was shot down in the region after clashes.
