But as Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel Hamid explains, there are still a few places in the Iraqi capital where the world game brings people together.

Sport has always provided young people with the chance to dream.
Al Jazeera's Imran Garda travelled to the Namibian desert, which is just about the last place on earth you would expect to find people hitting golf balls or anything else for that matter.
But out here, in one of the most desolet places imaginable, you would be hard pressed to find anyone with more enthusiasn or a greater passion for the game.
Imran Garda met up with a group of golfers who share the dream of being the next Tiger Woods.
Nuba Wrestlers
To finish the programme we look at the ancient wrestling tradition of Nuba in central Sudan.
Locals claim the sport dates back 2500 years and refute the claims that the Greeks invented the sport, as Joanna Gasiorowska reports.
