Pakistan tests new missile
Hatf-III or Ghaznavi missile has a
range of 290km

Pakistan has successfully test-fired a new version of its short-range nuclear-capable missile.

A military statement said the Hatf-III [Ghazanvi] ballistic missile was successfully launched from an undisclosed location on Saturday. The missile has a range of 290 km.
Pakistan routinely test-fires upgraded versions of its missiles.

The latest is the third in as many weeks and was part of training exercises by the Pakistan army's Strategic Force Command. The army tested medium range Ghauri and Shaheen-1 missiles last month.

The test came a day after the US House of Representatives approved legislation allowing shipments of civilian nuclear fuel to Pakistan’s nuclear-armed neighbour, India.

Critics says the nuclear deal between Washington and New Delhi could trigger an arms race in South Asia.

Pakistan became a declared nuclear power on May 28, 1998, when it conducted underground nuclear tests in response to those carried out by India. It tested its first missile the same year.
