I think there are some deeper things going on - just take a look at a map - Iraq on the left side, Afghanistan on the right side, and Iran in the middle ... and on both the left and the right sides, US/NATO occupation. I give it 6 months, just like Iraq. It does not really matter, in my opinion, if they have nuclear weapons or even if they plan so - they have the Caspian Sea to the north and the 3rd proven oil and gas resources in the region ... enough said.

Jim "The problem with Ahmadinejad, unlike Hosny Mubarak of Egypt, is that Ahmadinejad does not like to take billions of American tax payers’ money in aid to rule the Iranians under emergency laws."
No, he and Kamenie do not rule Iran with emergency laws because they take billions of dollars from America, they rule Iran with emergency laws because they are terrified of progress and cannot accept the premise that Iranians might want something more than subjugation to a iron-fisted theocracy. At least Mubarak is recieving money in foreign aid that he can use to help his country... there are absolutely no positive consequences to the Iranian regime usurping their people's natural rights. But hey, you don't care what Iran does to its people as long as they say bad things about America...right?... and Bashir, Mugabe and Chavez are but humble saints who care not for their own image, only of their people.

There have been no posts from Niloufar or anyone else from Iran for 2 weeks now. I hope they're okay and not on trial for 'consorting with the enemy' because they've been posting here - or elsewhere.
If you're alive and well and can, please drop a line to two. I, for one, would like the reassurance.

What happens in Iran? Is this we are witnessing now a struggle by the regime in order not to be overtaken by the truth about the elections?
The on-going trials by many people are considered show trials aiming to control the opposition. But I also get the feeling that the regime is on trial with the whole world as the judges.

Lazarus-USA: Hello to you! I have many Iranian friends here in Israel and they are telling me the regime is afraid. They have been exposed as nothing more than an Islamic dictatorship and the people are tired of it. I am also told the discontent is much wider than the media is reporting. It is going down hill quickly. Regards, Arik Boleli, Jerusalem

An act of mudslinging: Casting aspersions with intent to discredit Negative, often personal, frequently inaccurate or exaggerated attacks of the opposition.

Tank Gunner, Jerusalem, Israel: Shalom, Arik. I wondered the same thing when I saw the statement from Khamenei. I had expected all kinds of ‘confessions’ from jailed (ie, tortured) protesters blaming Western subterfuge, etc. What I thought was also significant was another senior Iranian cleric (Grand Ayatollah Hossein Montazeri) sharply criticizing the supreme leader, saying Iran is being ruled by a dictatorship. I wonder if the people in charge have begun to realize the extent of the ‘discontent’ amongst the Iranian people and may be ‘backing off’ from previous claims.

... not my thin skin there Tank Gunner, it is your annoying habit of identifying me as everything left of the kitchen sink just because I advise restraint rather then recklessness. Yes, a "retired" US Marine from the Viet Nam era who has the experience to know what an unnecessary war can do ... like Iraq, for example?

The Grand Ayatollah is now claiming there is no proof that outside forces (USA, Britain, Israel, Mossad, Girlscouts) had anything to do with the unrest during the recent election. Why the "about face"? what's going on?
