Tony Burman

Tony Burman: Managing Director

Tony Burman brings with him a distinguished international reputation as an experienced journalist and broadcast executive.

Until recently, he was editor-in-chief and executive director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC News) and has been an award-winning news and documentary producer with field experience in more than 30 countries and several continents, including the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
Mr Burman, while head of CBC's news and current affairs operations, the largest news organisation in Canada, implemented the successful integration of CBC's radio, TV and online operations.
During his experience, which spans more than three decades, Tony has received more than 100 awards for programming and network achievements in Canada, the US, the UK, France, Monte Carlo and Argentina.
 

Ibrahim Helal: Deputy Managing Director, News and Programming

Ibrahim Helal
Ibrahim Helal has more than 18 years of experience in international journalism, including roles with Egyptian TV, BBC Arabic TV, the BBC World Service Trust and the Al Jazeera Arabic Channel.
 
Ibrahim joined Al Jazeera English from the BBC World Service Trust, where he was Project Director for the Middle East and North Africa, responsible for the training and development of Arab media organisations.
 
Prior to this, Ibrahim was Editor-in-Chief of the Al Jazeera Arabic Channel, responsible for editorial policy and output during the September 11th attacks and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
 
With the BBC’s Arabic Service in London he participated in the launch of its Arabic website and news intake department.
 
He switched to Abu Dhabi TV as Head of News from 2000 to 2001 overseeing coverage of events including the death of the Syrian president Hafiz Al-Assad, the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and the second Palestinian uprising.
 
Before that Ibrahim helped to establish the Al Jazeera Arabic Channel as a programme editor from 1996 to 1999.

Ibrahim was chosen by the World Economic Forum to be one of the C-100 council for dialogue between civilizations in 2004 and by the same global organisation in 2005 as one of the Young Global Leaders.


Al Anstey: Director of News
 
Al Anstey
Al Anstey joined Al Jazeera English from the UK's ITN where he was the head of Foreign News - responsible for running foreign coverage and managing news teams.

Al previously held roles as ITN's foreign editor and senior foreign editor, in which he covered all the major stories in world news.

He first became a producer at the US's CBS News, then moved to the start-up of the UK's GMTV as news editor.

Al was then hired by APTN to set up their offices in Asia, then switched to their Sydney office to set up operations in the South Pacific, before moving to London as Asia editor with responsibility for all of APTN's bureaux and coverage in the region.


Max Uechtritz: Director Of Programmes

 Max Uechtritz is an award-winning Australian journalist, programme maker, media executive and international correspondent who brings with him a passion for provocative and public-spirited programming and an internationally-respected career that has spanned more than 30 years, involving senior roles in public and commercial broadcasting, print and digital media.

From 2000-2004, Max was executive director of news and current affairs with ABC Australia, overseeing 800 journalists and 22 current affairs and documentary programmes. These programmes, including Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners, have been multiple award-winners in Australia and abroad. He was also responsible for the content and launch of news programmes on the ABC Asia Pacific satellite television network.

Max joined Al Jazeera English from NineMSN Australia, the country's leading web portal and publisher and a joint venture with Microsoft USA, where he was editor-in-chief. He was formerly the network director of news for Nine Network Australia, the largest and market-leading commercial broadcaster.

Previously, he was Washington bureau chief and Europe correspondent for ABC Australia, reporting from 30 countries on five continents and winning awards and plaudits for his coverage of China, Middle East, Gulf War, collapse of the Soviet Union, Balkan wars and the Mandela and Clinton elections.


Sue Phillips: Director Foreign Bureaux and Development

Sue Phillips

Sue Phillips' career includes senior roles as London Bureau Chief for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

She also previously worked as the Managing Director of News World International, and Senior Radio Producer and Senior Television Producer at CBC.
