In the US, Gaza is a different war

The mainstream US media has been careful to balance images of Gazan suffering with those of Israelis, leading to accusations it is not reflecting the unequal death toll [EPA]

The images of two women on the front page of an edition of The Washington Post last week illustrates how mainstream US media has been reporting Israel's war on Gaza.

On the left was a Palestinian mother who had lost five children. On the right was a nearly equally sized picture of an Israeli woman who was distressed by the fighting, according to the caption.

As the Palestinian woman cradled the dead body of one child, another infant son, his face blackened and disfigured with bruises, cried beside her.

The Israeli woman did not appear to be wounded in any way but also wept.

Arab frustration

To understand the frustration often felt in the Arab world over US media coverage, one only needs to imagine the same front page had the situation been reversed.

Watch our coverage of the war on Gaza
If an Israeli woman had lost five daughters in a Palestinian attack, would The Washington Post run an equally sized photograph of a relatively unharmed Palestinian woman, who was merely distraught over Israeli missile fire?

When the front page photographs of the two women were published on December 30, over 350 Palestinians had reportedly been killed compared to just four Israelis.

What if 350 Israelis had been killed and only four Palestinians - would the newspaper have run the stories side by side as if equal in news value?

Like many major news organisations in the US, The Washington Post has chosen to cover the conflict from a perspective that reflects the US government's relationship with Israel. This means prioritising Israel's version of events while underplaying the views of Palestinian groups.

For example, the newspaper's lead article on Tuesday, which was published above the mothers' photographs, quotes Israeli military and civilian sources nine times before quoting a single Palestinian. The first seven paragraphs explain Israel's military strategy. The ninth paragraph describes the anxiety among Israelis, spending evenings in bomb shelters. Ordinary Palestinians, who generally have no access to bomb shelters, do not make an appearance until the 23rd paragraph.

To balance this top story, The Washington Post published another article on the bottom half of the front page about the Palestinian mother and her children. But would the paper have ever considered balancing a story about a massive attack on Israelis with an in-depth lead piece on the strategy of Palestinian militants?

Context stripped

Major US television channels also adopted the equal time approach, despite the reality that Palestinian casualties exceeded Israeli ones by a hundred fold. However, such comparisons were rare because the scripts read by American correspondents often excluded the overall Palestinian death count.

By stripping the context, American viewers may have easily assumed a level playing field, rather than a case of disproportionate force.

Take the opening lines of a report filed by NBC's Martin Fletcher on December 30: "In Gaza two little girls were taking out the rubbish and killed by an Israeli rocket - while in Israel, a woman had been driving home and was killed by a Hamas rocket. No let up today on either side on the fourth day of this battle."

Omitted from the report was the overall Palestinian death toll, dropped continuously in subsequent reports filed by NBC correspondents over the next several days.

When number of deaths did appear - sometimes as a graphic at the bottom of the screen - it was identified as the number of "people killed" rather than being attributed specifically to Palestinians.

No wonder the overwhelmingly asymmetrical bombardment of Gaza has been framed vaguely as "rising tensions in the Middle East" by news anchors.

With the lack of context, the power dynamic on the ground becomes unclear.

ABC news, for example, regularly introduced events in Gaza as "Mideast Violence". And Like NBC, reporters excluded the Palestinian death toll.

On December 31, when Palestinian deaths stood at almost 400, ABC correspondent Simon McGergor-Wood began a video package by describing damage to an Israeli school by Hamas rockets.

The reporter's script can be paraphrased as follows: Israel wanted a sustainable ceasefire; Israel needed to prevent Hamas from rearming; Hamas targets were hit; Israel was sending in aid and letting the injured out; Israel was doing "everything they can to alleviate the humanitarian crisis". And with that McGregor-Wood signed off.

Palestinian perspective missing

There was no parallel telling of the Palestinian perspective, and no mention of any damages to Palestinian lives, although news agencies that day had reported five Palestinians dead.

For the ABC correspondent, it seemed the Palestinian deaths contained less news value than damage to Israeli buildings. His narration of events, meanwhile, amounted to no less than a parroting of the official Israeli line.

In fact, the Israeli government view typically went unchallenged on major US networks.

The US media has been accused of prioritising Israel's version of events [EPA]
Interviews with Israeli spokesmen and ambassadors were not juxtaposed with the voices of Palestinian leaders. Prominent American news anchors frequently adopted the Israeli viewpoint. In talk show discussions, instead of debating events on the ground, the pundits often reinforced each other's views.

Such an episode occurred on a December 30 broadcast of the MSNBC show, Morning Joe, during which host Joe Scarborough repeatedly insisted that Israel should not be judged.

Israel was defending itself just as the US had done throughout history. "How many people did we kill in Germany?" Scarborough posed.

The blame rested on the Palestinians, he concluded, connecting the Gaza attacks to the Camp David negotiations of 2000. "They gave the Palestinians everything they could ask for, and they walked away from the table," he said repeatedly.

Although this view was challenged once by Zbigniew Brzezinski, a former US official, who appeared briefly on the show, subsequent guests agreed incessantly with Scarborough's characterisation of the Palestinians as negligent, if not criminal in nature.

According to guest Dan Bartlett, a former White House counsel, the Palestinian leadership had made it "very clear" that they were uninterested in peace talks.

Another guest, NBC anchor David Gregory, began by noting that Yasser Arafat, the late Palestinian president, "could not be trusted", according to Bill Clinton, the former US president.

Gregory then added that Hamas had "undercut the peace process" and actually welcomed the attacks.

"The reality is that Hamas wanted this, they didn't want the ceasefire," he said.

Columnist Margaret Carlson also joined the show, agreeing in principal that Hamas should be "crushed" but voicing concern over the cost of such action.

Thus the debate was not whether Israel was justified, but rather what Israel should do next. The Palestinian human tragedy received little to no attention.

Victim's perspective

Arab audiences saw a different picture altogether. Rather than mulling Israel's dilemma, the Arab news networks captured the air assault in chilling detail from the perspective of its victims. The divide in coverage was staggering.

For US networks, the bombing of Gaza has largely been limited to two-minute video packages or five minute talk show segments. This has usually meant a few snippets of jumbled video: explosions from a distance and a momentary glance at victims; barely enough time to remember a face, let alone a personality. Victims were rarely interviewed.

The availability of time and space, American broadcast executives might argue, were mitigating factors.

On MSNBC for example, Gaza competed for air time last week with stories about the economy, such as a hike in liquor sales, or celebrity news, such as speculation over the publishing of photographs of Sarah Palin's new grandchild.

Most US networks have reported exclusively from Israel [GALLO/GETTY]
On Arab TV, however, Gaza has been the only story.

For hours on end, live images from the streets of Gaza are beamed into Arab households.

Unlike the correspondents from ABC and NBC, who have filed their reports exclusively from Israeli cities, Arab crews are inside Gaza, with many correspondents native Gazans themselves.

The images they capture are often broadcast unedited, and over the last week, a grizzly news gathering routine has been established.

The cycle begins with rooftop-mounted cameras, capturing the air raids live. After moments of quiet, thunderous bombing commences and plumes of smoke rise over the skyline. Then, anguish on the streets. Panicked civilians run for cover as ambulances careen through narrow alleys. Rescue workers hurriedly pick through the rubble, often pulling out mangled bodies. Fathers with tears of rage hold dead children up to the cameras, vowing revenge. The wounded are carried out in stretchers, gushing with blood.

Later, local journalists visit the hospitals and more gruesome images, more dead children are broadcast. Doctors wrap up the tiny bodies and carry them into overflowing morgues. The survivors speak to reporters. Their distraught voices are heard around the region; the outflow of misery and destruction is constant.

Palestinian voices

The coverage extends beyond Gaza. Unlike the US networks, which are often limited to one or two correspondents in Israel, major Arab television channels maintain correspondents and bureaus throughout the region. As angry protests take place on a near daily basis, the crews are there to capture the action live.

Even in Israel, Arab reporters are employed, and Israeli politicians are regularly interviewed. But so are members of Hamas and the other Palestinian factions.

The inclusion of Palestinian voices is not unique to Arab media. On a number of international broadcasters, including  BBC World and CNN International, Palestinian leaders and Gazans in particular are regularly heard. And the Palestinian death toll has been provided every day, in most broadcasts and by most correspondents on the ground. Reports are also filed from Arab capitals.

On some level, the relatively small American broadcasting output can be attributed to a general trend in downsizing foreign reporting. But had a bloodbath on this scale happened in Israel, would the networks not have sent in reinforcements?

For now, the Israeli viewpoint seems slated to continue to dominate Gaza coverage. The latest narrative comes from the White House, which has called for a "durable" ceasefire, preventing Hamas terrorists from launching more rockets.

Naturally the soundbites are parroted by US broadcasters throughout the day and then reinforced by pundits, fearing the dangerous Hamas.

Arab channels, however, see a different outcome. Many have begun referring to Hamas, once controversial, as simply "the Palestinian resistance".

While American analysts map out Israel's strategy, Arab broadcasters are drawing their own maps, plotting the expanding range of Hamas rockets, and predicting a strengthened hand for opposition to Israel, rather than a weakened one.

What Nonsense!!
In the USA, we understand Israel is defending its citizens against rockets from Hamas. This isn't about which side is suffering more casualties. It isn't about disproportionate force by the Israelis - if American cities were under attack, we would be using all resources available to end the attacks. Hamas knew Israel had more power than they did - if they didn't want Israel to attack, Hamas shouldn't have provoked them.

why Soudanes victims recieve less atention from the Arab world
Bill you have a point, but the case of Gaza is much more sensitive because of the historical relation between Jews and Muslim. Because of the war in Gaza, Muslims again feel that this is an attack from the big enemy against them so they can steal their land. And also the fact that this is taken place near the sacred Mosque in Jerusalem. It is a shame that Muslims don't speak out about the massacre in Sudan and other countries.

Exposing Wests hypocrisy
I really appreciate the efforts of Mr. Habib by closely monitoring this double standard of so called free and unbiased media of West. I have been closely monitoring the coverage of this war against humanity by Israel at CNN and BBC . CNN anchors practically speak like Israeli army spokesperson. These western channels are just part and parcel of Zionist game plan to destroy the Arab world and occupy the whole region.

It is true that the news coverage in the US is biased in favor of the Jews but it is also true that the Palestinians do little to get sympathy in the US. When they elect Hamas they ask for war. When they march it is not for peace but waiving AK's and pledging destruction. Palestine needs a Gandi.

Why is it important to have a free press in a democratic society? Why is it important to restrict fair and “objective” covering of the press in a democratic country (USA)? That question is for a higher type of thinking. Hopefully the democratic people will turn to other sources for information as I have done, sources on the internet like Aljazeera, the Real News. Democracy now.

In the U.K the media coversage is fairly equal. Far better in than the ABC news and CNN. I feel very sad that my American cousins have become such great hypocrites by not 'practicing what they preach'. Human rights and equality has been denied to the people of Gaza. Yet the American media and government support Israel's actions. It seems my cousins have forgotten the great constitution upon which America was built. Truly a very sad day for all who are human at heart!

victory over innocents
The ghost of Israel's humiliation at the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006 hangs over this enterprise and Israel will want to exorcise it. After a week's aerial bombardment, the death toll already stands at nearly 500, of which approximately 70 are children and 27 women. Of the 2,650 Gazans injured, more than 270 are women and 650 children. So much for Israel's claim that their targets are Hamas militants.

The article is True. Why? Because those in the US have grown tired of the issue. From a Human plight standpoint this conflict pales in comparisiòn to the Suddan. 500 dèád in palestine and over 2 milliòn in Súdan butchered by Islamists since 1990-300k since 2003. Not one mass protest in the islamic world for Súdan. Súdan doèsnt fit the preffered victim stance thús nò protest.

The most dependable source of television news in America is BBC. CNN International is very good, but hard to get in the U.S. The same thing can be said for Al-Jazeera. Besides this news site and the news outlets mention, I like Haaretz, the Israeli paper, which, at least reports the facts and has a variety of opinion. The Nation magazine in the U.S, is pretty good too, but you are dealing with dreamers there.

One-sided reporting
BBC and CNN are only reporting on the Israeli viewpoint. Al Jazeera has shown many interviews with UN ambassadors that criticise the US. BBC and CNN have shown only the US ambassador to the UN's comments. I watched all 3 channels for more than 8 hours yesterday - the BBC and CNN did not show any other UN ambassadors at all. Very one-sided, and unacceptable.

There is lots of coverage of how horrible this is for the Palestinians. However, where I will agree is that I have not seen to many news reporters getting into the question of why. Why is Hamas firing rockets? Why are Palestinians so unhappy? Why wont the ceasefires work? No one is asking Why these people are all living in such a tiny overpopulated place!

I think the oldest democracy should first be liberated from the occupier of their land before portraying itself as a symbol of democracy. The media editors are interested in pleasing their bosses, rather than showing the actual image. Two respected professors have sent their views to be published outside the country because the expressed view would cause them to loose their jobs. It is mostly out of ignorance of the conflict itself. The Gazans voted Hamas into office, and, as the defacto government in Gaza, Hamas attacked Israel. And, now, you are complaining because the papers in the USA don't take the side of the Gazans? In the USA, we understand that Hamas indiscriminately attacks Israeli civilians. Then, Hamas uses civilians as shields, and showcases their deaths when the person is caught in the crossfire. We understand why Israel is attacking with force - in America, we would do the same if our cities were attacked.

Not everyone in North America sides with Israel. In fact everyone I've talked to about this in the last few years sides with the Palestinians. It's sad how in a democracy the will of the people carries so little weight. We fought the Nazis because they were guilty of aggression but this is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians fast approaching the scale of Rwanda and the world should force them to stop or face the dissolution of Israel. The UN brought them into this world and they can take them out.

Everyone knows the US is biased toward Israel and everyone know why? But the palestians themselves are also not helping to improve their standing around the world either. Nobody can forget they were dancing and rejoicing during 9/11 and firing these meaningless rockets into Israel only give pretense to attack Gaza. Root cause
I think Hamas should end the rockets - they send out one rocket to signify their message, and inturn Israel responds in this manner. Hamas might end up meeting their quota of terrorising a section of the Israeli public, but they are not considering the retaliation and when Israel retaliates, they go into hiding leaving the civilians out in the open. If its a confict that they want, why don't the Hamas stand up for what they care for and face the Israeli army face-to-face?

This article is one example of the ongoing trend in the US to persuade people to a false representation of the ongoing political/economic issues outside the US. Anthony, You mentioned: "Hamas knew Israel had more power than they did - if they didn't want Israel to attack, Hamas shouldn't have provoked them." By that reasoning, so if I were a Jew living in Nazi Germany, I shouldn't bother forming a resistance as I have nothing but a few guns while Nazi Germany has a full arsenal of modern weaponry? While the extent of media bias is grossly overstated in this article, it makes sense that there will be sympathy with those who are both our allies and culturally similar. Hamas is at fault
Hamas is the reason the innocent civilians have been killed. Hamas cowardly operates among civilians. They intentionally surround themselves with innocents so that when Israel strikes at legitimate targets, it will cause horrific scenes. Hamas is incapable of fighting the IDF openly, so they not only target Israeli civilians, but they use their own civilians as propaganda tools so that they can gain a political victory in the stead of a tactical one.

Sadly we don't get the other side of the story here in the west, we only hear about Hamas rockets flying into Israel. One should question why are Hamas are firing rockets into Israel in the first place.

we should know the truth
The truth is that Hamas is a terrorist group. Hamas is the one who provoked the War and Israel is just giving them what they want! Hamas is using people as their shield to make Israel's image to the global community bad. The thing is that Israel is just defending its citizen by all means. THE MAIN CULPRIT HERE IS THE HAMAS WHO WANTS WAR! That's why News networks like aljazeera should stop making news that makes Israel look Bad which in Reality is Just doing its obligation to its citizens.

Fight for your country
What is happening right now in the middle east is a real shame. Two ethnies fighting for the same land, this is what medias say. But the real issu is more "two ethnies fighting, one to survive and the other to erase". Why can't Israel understand that they need to respect the palestinians that use to live here, instead they prefer to kill and call it defence! I understand the fighters, they are only fighting for freedom, and the right to be treated as men. Hasta la victoria siempre

Israelis and palestinians on the same side
The author of this article has sadly misinterpreted the intent of the US news coverage. The US media understands today what more and more nations understand and that in this war there is the side of Hamas – a radical terrorist organization, and the side of the Palestinian and Israeli men, women and children that are suffering dew to Hamas terrorist activities. The pictures of the two women are not meant to compare or equalize between the two women, bur rather to show the suffering on both sides

GAZA is a different war.
It is different because it is Palestinian terrorists who are hiding behind women and children and shoot rockets and missile's in order to aim and kill how many civilians they can. While the Israelis try to pinpoint the terrorist but sometimes the civilians nearby unfortanutly pay the price. It is time for all arabs to wake up and say enough is enough and let Gaza to be controlled by moderate people who want peace and declare there will of living side by side with Israeli and palestinian states.

Gaza outrage
As an American who is viewing the horrible pictures from Gaza I am vehemently opposed to Israel killings of the population. If you look at pictures displaying the life of the palestinians and the life of the Israeli - there is no comparison- the palestinians have suffered and have been tortured in many ways that are not acceptable- if Israel wants peace then help build that country up- build hospitals, schools, give them the life israel enjoys people are throwing rocks at men in tanks-equality?

Most US citizens are ignorant
Most US citizens will believe whatever is fed to them through our filtered and biased media. These are the same people that believe that their government would never hurt them, when in reality the same government does not care about them and only does things geared toward its own interest, not toward the people and not toward the betterment of the world. The same government that will conduct experiments and tests on its own citizens and soldiers without there knowledge. Americans-open your eyes!

US Media Bias
All media, US or otherwise, has bias. As an American, I do look at other sources of news, including Aljazeera. While I agree there is bias in the US media, take a look at the rest of the world. With all the faults of the US media, if it's not the best, it pretty close. If you find something better, let me know, I'd love to see it. As a side note, Aljazeera's english site does pretty good as well. I try to visit it daily.

In the US, Gaza is a different war
Here in the US we are hearing about the horrible toll the Palestinian people are enduring in this conflict. So many dead and wounded Women and Children. It is an outrageous and humanitarian abomination. Both sides MUST cease the hostilities immeadiately! Anger and vengance is the driving force of this Crime against GOD by both sides. Use all the negative energy being used to intimidate one side and slaughter the other to help all the suffering people at once!

To Mohammad in US statement. I've also kept up with all sides of the media as an American. I saw articles fabricated by your own media on the war in Iraq and other countries. I did not see them reporting positive news about us. You forget, most of the killings were done by their own citizens. But was this mentioned? As for the current war in Palestine. Would you stand and do nothing if your home is hit by rockets? I doubt it. Now who's media is being fair here?

Media Coverage
Some of this article is true, some is not. I have heard many times the difference in death toll. Overall, however, often the media in this county favors an Israeli point of view. But, given the history, is it all that hard to fathom why. 9/11 was despicable behavior. And due to a lack of education in this country, all Muslims are held responsible by most Americans. Obviously that's wrong, but this is the reality. I fear it will never change until the Arab world embraces more peaceful ways.

Hamas started the war
I feel really bad for the Palestinian people, I cry everytime I see the countless number of civilians that suffers due to Israel's attack. At the same time however, I feel that if Hamas didn't attack Israel first with their stupid little missiles, then Israel wouldn't have to resort to military action. I'm torn. Sometimes I feel that the US should just mind our own business and let the middle east annihilate each other.

Why do you lie. We have a free press.Insighting people to hate with lies about America doesnt help anything.I see all the killing,They show all of it.It was Arafat who walked out of Camp David, it was Israel who pulled out of Gaza, It was The Palestinian People who voted for Hamas. Hamas clearly stated there goals. It was Hamas who chased Fatah out of Gaza.It was Hamas who started firing rockets.Hamas was given the chance to accept Israel's right to exist. They refused

Reality and what people think.
I still don't understand why some people consider the Palestinian Resistance for Israeli Occupation a provocative act, why don't you consider hunger and sanction in Gaza for 2 years provocative . anyway you should know in simple words that if this resistance stops for any reason there will be no Gaza anymore Israel would occupy the whole strip and all of Gaza citizens will become refugees in other countries if not killed by Israel.

The world is not civilized yet
In US, Hamas is terrorist just like to fire rocket to Israel city for their pleasure just like other criminal do such as rapist, killer ect. The media never shows why Hamas doing this knowingly that they do have anything to protect themself. When Irish were being torture by British, When Jewish were killed by German, the oppressors and their friends justified their actions. This is human nature and the world has not civilized yet, justice is not blind.

It is true that some western newspapers are biased towards the Israeli view. Just like it is true that Al Jazeera is biased toward the Palestinian view. Neither western nor Arab news gets it 100% right and truthful. Because they are both run by humans beings who have an opinion one way or another. So there reports lean one way or another. I just pray this conflict will end soon Why can't people just learn to live together in peace?

Ignorance
Kerry & Brod, im not surprised by your ignorance comments. During 9/11, CNN and other US networks plastered pictures of Palestinians running in the street celebrating. It was later independently discovered that this scene was videoed several months earlier and had nothing to do with 9/11. Your networks were pouring oil over the fire. I’m glad our country has stopped CNN footage on our government channels, coz its pure one sided news reporting. Thank you Al jazeera for objective footage.

The reason the media doesn't report the truth whats happening in the middle east is because many reporter fear losing their jobs. Many government officials in Washington can't even voice their true opinions on Israel because they would lose their positions because Israel has too much influence on them through their lobby.

the netherlands are one of the closest iraeli alliess after the US - of course reporting in this tiny country only reflects the israeli propaganda - one of the dutch networks even devoted 3/4th of their items time when israel started the bombing raids, on how life of ordinary citizens in southern israel was deranged because of the frequent shelling ... at the time they reported several hundred casualties in gaza...

most palestines voted for hamas because it will strongly fight for the rights of the palestinians and the land of the palestinians and will never settle for less, and what is happenning now is the price they are paying for their freedom and land. In the US, Gaza is a different war
The author is very correct: the US media is a biased parrot of the government. The US uses, and therefore subsidizes, Israel with billions of dollars in weapons to realize its goal of dominating the Middle Eastern and Central Asian oil and economy. Israel will be its manager of those territories: all the countries decried as the "evil crescent". The war against Palestine has nothing to do with Hamas' rockets, but with its resistance against Israeli appropriation of Palestine.

How many ties must we hear about disproportionate force? Does one person out there actually believe Hamas would be nice and proportional if they had the upper hand? Are the Muslims in Sudan proportional to the africans they are murdering? I dont see reports about that on Al Jazeera. And like others I would like to see the pictures of Palestinians handing out candy on 9-11 one more time

Double standards
The article makes a point which does not come as a surprise. The propaganda war has always been a factor. What does surprise me though is that people have been so indoctrinated by the biased media and their own alliances that they somehow condone killing of innocents based on the crazy assertion that "If you voted for them (Hamas) you deserve it". This view is incoherent with basic moralarility and logical thinking.Just browsing though the comments here as well as on youtube this is quite evident

U.S. taxpayers could stop paying for this murder and receive minor punishment, compared to the murder that their tax dollars buy, daily. The 'progressives' (aka 'liberals') in the U.S.A. decry the geonocide by Israeli's and hate Bush some hate Obama - but all keep paying taxes and keep on paying for murder and thievery. From my understanding..hamas started this war? They kept firing rockets into israel and would not stop..jesus..you cant blame israel for attacking and putting a stop to this mess. Or trying to. THE WAR
The GAZA people have made some really stupid moves. HAMA as leaders. Real smart. Sending rockets to Israel again another GAZA Brainstorm. And then this tired old bit about Israel's right to exist. Do the Palestinians really want their own country ? They might get it if they stopped being the worlds nuisance and laughingstock. A Palestinian Homeland would be a real trip. I can see it now. Junkyard rockets aimed god knows where followed by non-sensical rants. Homicide bombers self detonating.

From the beginning UN have resolution for Israel-Palestine conflict untill now, US always vetoes all those resolution. UN resolutions are the facts that the world disagree with what israel done to the palestine. Balanced news is not showing the same picture from both side. Thoughts
This is a really great article, very eye opening. It is good to have news from a different perspective. I was wondering though, if there was some way you could make sure that people understand Americans and the American government/media are not the same. Someday, I dream that the Middle East and West will be bridged by the media, instead of separated. Thanks for your work.
