Gaza war diary: Al Jazeera detained

Israeli soldiers have been massed near the boundary with Gaza for almost a week [AFP]

Just before 8am, the sirens suddenly sound at our hotel in Ashkelon.

Two loud droning noises followed by a voice in Hebrew then in English: "Will all guests please make their way to a secure place." Rockets from Gaza are on their way.

Within seconds, there are two loud explosions. Ashkelon is the target. I'm told seven have landed in the city. There is some damage to one house and minor scratches to one resident. It's a reminder of how notoriously inaccurate these rockets are, and how they are indiscriminate in their targeting.

 Part 1: Frontline

As a matter of curiosity I go to check out the secure room on my floor. It is essentially a windowless conference room with chairs arranged around makeshift tables and a steel ladder which leads to the floor above. It provides more than adequate protection because the chances of a direct strike are so small.

Kissafim is a border crossing between Israel and Gaza. It's deserted. As we drive towards it, it's eerie just how quiet it is.

As I stand looking into Gaza, the silence is broken by the call to Friday prayer carried in the wind. It's suddenly drowned out by three loud explosions to my right, somewhere in the distance.

As I try to find out what has been hit, another three echo around the area.  Suddenly the drone of aircraft is also noticeable as Israeli spotter aircraft do their job in the skies above me.

I walk past the yellow permanent roadblocks and make my way to the boundary. It's marked by a fence which is possibly electrified and heavy concrete blocks.

This is the very edge of Israel.

Footage confiscated

Our presence is suddenly the subject of attention from the Israeli army. Three vehicles surround us and ask what we're doing. We explain, and they insist we hand over the tapes. Our local producer tries to tell them we have nothing that shows the army, but we're told we're filming in a closed military zone and co-operation is not optional.

Watch our coverage of the war on Gaza
They take our camera. For four hours we are detained and no one can explain why.  I'm told we were in a closed military area. When I point out that we didn't film anything to do with the military, the soldier before me shrugs and says he must wait for his senior officer to decide how to progress.

The police are called and eventually two officers appear. They are serious but friendly and insist things can be sorted out quickly. We're instructed to follow them to the police station at Afakim.

There we're asked why we were in the area and lectured about our responsibilities to check which areas are open and which are restricted.

Six hours in and we're told we have committed an offence; they are considering their options. We're questioned under caution and we answer honestly. The road to the boundary wasn't blocked and we passed police patrols who didn't turn us back.

Our statements are taken before two soldiers from the Israeli army arrive to watch all we've filmed. It's less than 10 minutes of material, which shows Israel, Gaza and the barrier that divides the two.

We're told the material shows something that is restricted and is to be confiscated.  We ask what it is that we've filmed that is so sensitive, but are given no answer.

Our camera and documents are returned and we're allowed to go. We are told we must stay out of the closed military zone. I point out that journalists from all over the world are currently operating in the area under the eyes of police and army but, as far as I'm aware, the only ones detained have been Al Jazeera journalists.  They insist we have not been singled out.

If anything, our encounter is an example of how nervous everyone is while talk circulates of an Israeli ground offensive into Gaza.

arent you ashamed of being so untruthful?
The guy is taping on a closed military area and he doesn't know? It just happens to be that the whole news media knows that the Israeli declared all areas on a 20km radius of gaza as closed areas. We, the free Arab world, want news, not lies.

Gaza War Diary
It amazes me that so many Israelis think that their government is right. They should be ashamed. Fighting sticks and homemade bombs with F-16 fighter jets and guided rockets is never OK. Forcing people off their property, so you can steal their land, is never OK. Keeping people from hospitals and beating them into submission is never OK. The next time I hear some Jews whining about Hitler, I'm gonna throw up. You've learned nothing. Hypocrites.

Hamas and Israel connected?
In light of the current tensions in Gaza it would be interesting for the public to understand the history of Hamas, i.e. that it was funded by Israel to counterbalance and destabilize Arafat's PLO. Please respond.

Israeli Apartheid
That is typical behaviour of OPPRESSIVE REGIMES.....we saw that under aparthteid and now the Israeli Regime is doing the same. We are not fools...we know who the real terrorists are...and it is not Hamas !!

The Israel military is racist
I have seen reports from MSNBC, CNN, ABC FOX etc... all literally right at the very place Mr. Fisher and his news crew were detained. They seem to be able to operate and film the tanks and troops massed along the border with impunity. Why? Because they are giving the Americanized version of events and are run by Americans. Any news group run by an Arab country is of course unwelcome. It proves that the Israeli military is racist.

filming gaza
What you are complaining about? sounds like you were treated appropriately...much better than the press gets in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. where there is no free press, freedom of religion, or equal rights for women.

you were lucky
Considering that your coverage is biased, you are cooperating with Hammas by fighting their propaganda war for them and you were filming in a closed zone you were treated with Kid gloves. An Israeli film crew filming in an area where Hammas are making preparations for war -would not have been arrested - just lynched!

Gaza
I want to say to your reporters who are reporting from Gaza. Excellent Reporting, both to the presenters who give the news bulletins and those brave enough to report from within the war torn gaza. with best wishes and kind regards

Your journalists at AJ
Your journalists are the best in the business, and my primary source of news from the Middle East alonside the Israeli Haaretz. Lately Haaretz has taken to censoring and dumbing down photos so as not to be too "alarming." We trust Aljazeera will continue to provide the world with accurate, hard hitting and daring journalism. You are the best....

Voice of voiceless
Remember what u are:the voice of voiceless,do not falter and stay on course. Am interested in the truth not an american perspective. Isnt it interestin that in a country that is waging so many wars in the world, the masses r concern with what lindsay lohan did, whre paris hilton was spoted.u'd think they'd atleast b interested in knowin how many people their troops have killed so far. What an ignorant lot!

disproportionate response
if one sits back for a minute and ask yourself: how would you respond to a KASSAM or mortar attack, if you are a state? You should think first that by attacking with a "primitive" rocket Israelis victim numbers are "low" not because of HAMAS or JIHAD`s generosity but because they don´t know it better (yet). Should Israeli artillery respond by the same quality of ordnance? Ridiculous!!! Everybody in GAZA must know that the "brave" HAMAS fighters "hide" between the population and don´t care for

Impetence of UN
It is confirmed and reiterated the action of UN in all conflicts when a underdeveloped country fail to take action for the good of developed country, UN action proved to be a sustainer but when a country like israel or america causes atrocities UN become impotent and helpless. Its a double standard. The best way for the poor countries is, to cease their incorporation and make an other UN type to protect their interests. Otherwise there would be like the current situations to come.

Reaction
Imagine what would have happened if an Israeli TV crew had done the same in Syria, Iran or Yemen ? This is just to prove that your point is not valid. Press freedom only exists in some countries in that region, and Israel is one of them. So please stop complaining, or just try to figure out what would have happened in almost all of Arab anti-democratic states.

al-Jazeera detained
One must question any action such as this. Censorship of the media in any way is characteristic of tyrannical and brutal regimes who do not want coverage of their crimes for the whole world to see. Israel has said they should not let foreign press into Gaza to cover the offensive, since they would only work in the service of a terror organization. But if their actions are just and legitimate as they claim, what do they have to hide?

Aj- freedom of press
I firstly would like to commend AJ for brilliant , trustworthy news! I do not feel that the reporter is complaining , just stating what happened. Freedom of the press is not being upheld as its been reported that no press is allowed to enter gaza, do people just think whats the reason for that? Maybe its because there are gross violations of human rights in the area??
