Libya halts Swiss oil shipments
Port authorties in Libya have demanded that the case against Hannibal Gaddafi be dropped [AFP]

Libya is stopping oil shipments to Switzerland in protest over the arrest of the son of Muammar Gaddafi, the country's leader, according to a state-owned shipping company.

The Maritime Transport National Corporation also said in a statement on Thursday that all vessels carrying Swiss-made goods had been barred from unloading their cargoes at Libyan ports.

The ban on oil shipments includes both crude oil and refined petroleum products, and amounts to 40 per cent of the company's business, Ali Bilhajj Ahmed, the head of the company, said.

Ahmed said that the company's response was appropriate, saying it is "the least we should do".

The company's workers had staged a protest outside the Swiss embassy in Tripoli.

They threatened "further action" against Swiss authorities if they did not apologise "in the next coming hours" for the arrest of Hannibal Gaddafi in Geneva on July 15.

He and his wife are accused of assaulting some of their staff. The couple were freed on bail after being held for two days.

The Swiss foreign ministry has sent a delegation to Libya with information about the arrest of Hannibal "to prevent a crisis between the two countries".

Julia Slater, a journalist based in Switzerland, said that media reaction in the country has been one of bemusement.

"The impact of what this will have is being played down, and the press has been quite indignant as to how the Libyans are reacting," she said.

"The Swiss authorities also continue say publicly that this will not escalate, and will be resolved soon."

'Problematic' situation

Mohamed Ben-Madani, a North Africa analyst, told Al Jazeera that the situation remains awkward for Switzerland.

"The Swiss government cannot interfere with the judicial process, but the Libyan authorties are demanding that this case be dropped," he said.

"What is also problematic is that Switzerland receives 90 per cent of its oil from Libya, and this dispute now has the potential get much worse."

Libya's port authority lists Hannibal as its official "adviser", and warned of "new escalatory measures" against Switzerland and demanded that Bern "close within the next few hours the case it fabricated" against Gaddafi's son.

A Swiss government spokeswoman said that the authorities were "concerned at the retaliatory measures," but hoped the situation would calm "rapidly".

"Diplomatic exchanges are under way right now, and that the supply of fuels is "assured," she said.

Tripoli has already recalled some of its diplomats from Switzerland, suspended the issuing of visas for Swiss citizens, reduced the number of flights to Switzerland and has detained two Swiss nationals on various charges, the Swiss foreign ministry said

Switzerland in turn, has warned its citizens not to travel to Libya.

Now, why didn't Gaddafi and the other Arab dictators do the same to Denmark when they insulted our prophet (PBUH). Why doesn't he do the same to the EU and the US the main supporter of the terrorist stat of Israel to show his solidarity with Victims of Gaza who are suffering under the illegal blockade? Because, all they care about are themselves, their immediate families, their wealth, and their power.

Libyas reaction
As far as libya's reaction is concerned. they are just over reacting on that issue. And i strongly believe any one breaks the law they will be punished, no matter he/she president son or daughter. That shows how personal intergrity comes first than the nation or ummah's interest / pride.

imagine Swiss national been arrested in Libya?
i think libya reacted less than expected, or more less,we have here a presidents son and hi wife get arrested in another country, then the reaction is only sanction of a particular type. imagine if Libya arrested an swiss ordinary citizen, then we would have had a military aggression agaist libya to free that citizen. the words Muslim and Arab sounds so cheap in Europe, otherwise we will not have Gadaffi's son get arrested for unfounded accusation.

Re: Libya halts Swiss oil shipments
Switzerland should stop relying on Libya for oil. Embrace renewable energy or get alternative sources for fuel. Libya should let the Swiss judicial system progress unimpeded. I'm sure the Libyans will not want other states to interfere in their own judiciary. Dialogue between both countries are better than punitive actions.

Assault
Without knowing the particulars, regardless of wealth, religion, social status, etc., I believe we need to put ourselves in the situation and determine if that's how we would expect ourselves and our loved one's to be treated. The use of coersion and strong armed tactics is not appropriate. Emotions can compel actions that are inappropriate but restraint needs to be taught and learned. "Staff" can be replaced if needed.

Held hostage by oil
Switzerland shouldn't bow to the bullying of Libya but the entire world should bow the the imperialism of the US Kevin McGinnis? As long as the world remains dependant on oil this is what you will have. When all nations start obtaining hydrogen from seawater then we will finally be free from the imperialism and aggression of oil producing countries and thieves like the US.

Stop sending oil to Switzerland!
Dear people of Libya, thank you for your attention! Thank you for considering to stop sending Oil to Switzerland. Libya is our main Oil supplier so you really have all the trumps in your hands and therefore please play them wisely. I am concerned about the environement and therefore don't mind if Oil prices rise in Switzerland while air pollution will change for the better. Why not let Swiss companies act socially much more responsible in Libya before starting further Oil shippments? Thanks!

Libya halts Swiss oil shipments
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Libyan people and their government for making Canada a more attractive alternative for the world's oil supply needs. To the Swiss: If you would like to buy your oil from a country that understands the rule of law and doesn't cut of oil supplies on a whim, Canada welcomes your business.

What a pathetic way of dealing with a problem by an oil rich nation which uses bullying tactics to force the judiciary system of Switzerland to bow down to its demands. Shameful and disgraceful.

Actually, the libyans are generally very friendly people. However, I am surprised by the actions State oil company to stop supplying oil to Switzerand. Who will benefit from this action? In actual fact, there will be less carbon emissions in Switzerland and probably make them think seriously about using alternative energies and minimise dependency on oil producing countries in the long term. However, this matter should have been handled in a more diplomatic manner than then the way it has.

rich boy treatment
Did it ever occur to any of you that Hannibal might be guilty of this crime? Does it really seem all that irrational that even the children of world leaders be asked to respect the laws of nations they visit. If you ask me this amount to special treatment and it is wrong. The charges are not even that serious so perhaps Hannibal should work out some kind of settlement with the people he supposedly wronged and be done with it.

Neutral country
I think the main issue here is whether Hannibal's visit was o0fficial, and whether diplomatic immunity applied. Diplomatic immunity doesn't apply just because you are of a different country, I think the US showed us that today by executing the mexican citizen. Also everyone talking of war and aggrssion remember Switzerland is a neutral country.

Shame on Libya!!!
Libya should be ashamed of its government's despicable act. Libya should not interfere in the judicial system of another nation! Switzerland, do not bow to Libya's bullying if Gaddafi is guilty punish him but make no special deal to let him go without a real trial. Too often wealthy people just coast through the world hurting everyone around them. Hannibal is obviously a spoiled brat if he thinks he can strike hotel staff with impunity.

Libya
Actually the Libyans stopped buying goods from Denmark and Libyans died in demonstrations against Denmark. Libya has shown solidarity with the Arabs and Palestinians for decades, and Muammar Al-Gathafi tried for decades to form a union among all Arab states. Only a strong Arab union would have prevented what we have now in Gaza, and also Israel attacking Lebanon, and of course the Iraq war, that devastated the whole country. And Libya was punished with sanctions and wrong accusations for it.

The Swiss will cave
If 90% of the Swiss' oil import comes from Libya, they're definitely going to cave to Libya's threats. The Libyans are pathetic though. One of their own assaults a number of people and the Swiss are supposed to ignore it? c'mon. This has "3rd world country" written all over it. DRS

Qaddafi
Qaddafi family is a shame and a disgrace, what is even more shameful is the fact that western countries constantly extoll the virtues of democracy and wow not to deal with dictators but deal with them anyway if the dictators happen to offer sweet deals. Now Swiss must treat his criminal son with more respect then he deserves ,or deal with the consequences of dealing with a proven hardened, criminal dictator and his lovely son.But don't stop worshipping democracy when it comes to speeches.

Justice should prevail
It depends on what purpose Hannibal visit to Geneva if its private then I agree with Kevin that he should put on trial but if its official visit then he should not be arrested or worse detained for three days, even assuming the accusation is true, he has diplomatic immunity. It is unfair and despicable not to apply the law because those who broke it are foreigner however, it is equally unjust to circumvent or use the flaws of the law to prejudice others.

Let there be real justice ! In the name of God and mankind !
Hello everybody, especially my friends in Africa and all the valued people of Libya! What will be the really just thing here? Sure, anybody who mistreats others should be punished, Swiss, Libyan, American, Chinese, Russian or Indian: whoever! Consequentely Swiss judges are to punish Gadaffi and his wife if found guilty. Also consequently Libyan judges must persecute Swiss Managers in Libya if they are mistreating Libyans. Do ABB / Nestlé managers treat their local workers just and right? -)

Libya halts Swiss oil shipments
Gaddafi is hrting himself by stopping Oil shipment to switzerland. Libya owns 2 refinerys in switzerland and over 350 gas-stations, Tamoil. So we swiss just stop to get petrol from Tamoil-Petrolstations. No problems for us. The problem with gaddafis sons is that they have not recieved proper education, it is not the first time they created problems by getting drunk and attacking hotel staff. We hope they will never again set food on our soil.

Libya
It is blatant that the retaliatory measures taken by Libyan state oil company are absurd. No matter where one comes from , one should abide by the laws of the host country. Punitive charges brought by the host country againts any individual should not be used into bully the country to change their respective judicial system. This is sheer arrogance!!!!

I think that Europe is getting less and less tolerant of people with hypocritical and extremist ideas, who will simply not be allowed to get away with outrageous behaviour or try and suppress the right to freedom of speech, intrinsic in western values. If what is going on in the west is so abhorrent then why stay there? I think we know the answer and it's sickeningly hypocritical. Expect a bigger backlash from tolerant Europe,

The article does not say if the assualt happened in the embassy, which is libyan territory or Swiss territory. Does the staff have diplomatic cover? Is the staff Swiss? Does the son have diplomatic cover? It's a poorly written article missing too much information, it could start a war or at least cause the Swiss to pay more for oil.

Diplomatic Immunity
I'm not sure as to why switzerland doesn't understand diplomatic immunity. you have to let diplomats go once you establish that they're diplomats. i'm sure that ghaddafi's entire family has diplomatic immunity. i guess maybe the west doesn't want that to count for muslims or muslim countries. lybia should do the same to switzerland's diplomats. somebody in bern should get really fired for this

What about the people?
Would President Gaddafi have done the same if a citizen of Libya had "suffered" the same? If he is doing all these just because the person arrested is his son, he surely is a transgressor in the words of Allah. I don't know whether there is a big conspiracy going on to defame Libya but the law in general in the western country is not very bad & can't be easily manipulated. On the other hand, Son's of rich people r normally spoiled...any Libyan can say whether this person(son) is an angle or not.

Response to Moroccan Actually, Libya stopped boycotted goods from Denmark and Libyans died in demonstrations against the cartoons. Muammar al-Gathafi has supported the Palestinians and the Arab cause all his life and tried hard for decades to form a strong union among the Arab states. Only a strong union would have prevented what we see now in Gaza, as well as the total destruction of Iraq, and Israel attacking Lebanon. And all that Libya got were sanctions and wrong accusations like Lockerbie

the Swiss are wicked
How dare Switzerland arrest the next great Lion of Tripoli. Cut off oil,,, not enough,, It is inconcievable that staff could be mistreated by a Muslim. Especially a glorious and devout Muslim like the gret Hannibal. The Swiss should be ashamed. It is not like any Philipinos have ever been harmed by Saudis' while working as maids. Not a single Bangledeshi or Indian national has ever been mistreated, cheated or abused while constructing Dubai. Those who make cartoons should not laugh at reality
