Obama cartoon stirs controversy
The Obama camp said the cover was "tasteless and offensive" [AFP]

A magazine cover of Barack Obama and his wife has caused controversy in the United States.

The New Yorker cartoon depicts the Democratic presidential candidate as a Muslim and his wife Michelle in camouflage fatigues with a gun strapped to her shoulder, with a portrait of Osama bin Laden hanging over the mantel.

The magazine said the cartoon on its cover was satirical and designed to mock the misconceptions US voters have about Obama.

The cartoon shows the couple standing in the presidential Oval Office in front of a fireplace in which an American flag is burning.

The illustration by Barry Blitt showed Obama in sandals, robe and turban, and his wife dressed in camouflage pants, combat boots and an assault rifle.

The New Yorker issue, titled The Politics of Fear, hit the newsstands on Monday.

The presidential candidate did not respond when asked about the cartoon, but Bill Burton, a campaign spokesman, condemned the cover, saying the magazine might think of it as "a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create, but most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive, and we agree".

John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, said the cover was "totally inappropriate".

'Obvious satire'

The New Yorker said the drawing "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are".

Misconceptions

Recent Newsweek magazine poll among American electorate indicates:

39% believe Obama attended an Islamic school while growing up in Indonesia

26% believe he was raised a Muslim

12% believe he used a Quran when he was sworn in as a member of the US senate

12% believe is a practising Muslim today

"The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another," it said on Monday.

"Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover."

The magazine added that there were also two "very serious" articles on Obama in the same issue.

Patrick Egan, an assistant professor of politics at New York University, said people who read The New Yorker would see the cover's satirical character as obvious.

"Anyone who knows anything about the New Yorker is going to be able to recognise that this is satire," he told Al Jazeera.

"It's taking what some Americans falsely believe and blowing it up to literally cartoonish proportions. And, in that sense, it is sophisticated satire and something that a lot of people can kind of laugh over."

The cartoon controversy has highlighted the misconceptions about Obama.

A recent Newsweek magazine poll showed that more than a quarter of the American electorate believe that Obama was raised a Muslim and 12 per cent believe he remains a practising Muslim.

Obama is a Christian, and his campaign has had to set up what it calls an anti-smear website to combat rumours spreading on the internet about his faith and character.

Obama is not muslim
I think its clear that Obama is not muslim. he told to the reporters and his campaign that he Christian. But the Question is if he is muslim or jewish or christian didn't he have the right to become a president in America? Totally the answer is yes.

Satire requires that your audience be smart enough to "get it", and although the New Yorker staff may believe that it's readers are that clever, most Americans browsing the magazine racks are sadly not.

It is unfortunate to see the cover. It is also unfortunate that the Obama campaign has to create a website to stop the rumors. I really doubt McCain or any of the other white cannidates had to create one.

The cartoon is clearly satirical and those that complain about it clearly don't understand satyr and the beneficial effect it has in a mature democracy.

Cartoon and Media
one thing that seems to be missing here is that most americans simple don't care altogether that much about the opinions of our talking heads in the media. Everyone is saying that Americans are stupid for making a fuss about this, but its really the media making it this way. Network news viewership keeps plumetting, and the networks wonder why everyone is turning to the internet, and non-american sources for news - because american news is full of it. So don't be so quick to pin it on Americans.

Upsetting
The most upsetting thing about this issue, is the fact that the majority of americans (particularly the outspoken and reactionary media) fail to grasp the entire concept of satire. This is a popular sentiment apparently...

It’s a proof of how powerful the right wing christens are around Bush in US. Since Obama has appeared on the stage it was clear those guys will shoot at him with everything they have. Unfortunately Obama has made a U Turn in his own policy by starting to pleas those guys. He should have listened more carefully to his priest.

obama cartoon controversy
It clearly showed that the American press is welding its power to create, as usual, conflict and tarnish the image of sen. B. Obama. This is the work of people who do not want to see a black American in the Oval Office. They are expressing their fear that one day racial equality will reign in America!!!

Much more than cartoons
Politicians in the Republican Party keep "accidently" calling him Osama instead of Obama, to associate him in voters' minds with bin ladin -Many Americans say they won't vote for him because they think he's a Muslim-Some people say they won't vote for him because his middle name is Hussein, like the former ruler of Iraq's last name-(I probably spelled that wrong-Please forgive me)-They're selling a racist T-shirt that says "Obama in '08" that has a picture of a monkey peeling a banana on it-

the article about obama and his wife is offensive. so what if he is muslim? why has muslim not got a right to be a president. i think it is pathetic that america speciality the white have to consider themselves (big) to tell and potray some a muslim when he is clearly saying he aint. added to that i true muslim will never denie his religion. i say bravo to abama, and it is about time a black man lead. be proud to be black obama and hope you succed we are following you.

"They do understand"
The New Yorker tries to catch attention since it isn't as popular as, say, Newsweek or the Economist. I enjoy satire, but in the interest of good taste, this image should not have made it to the cover. The Economist did polling & found that most in Middle America do understand the joke. The New Yorker comes over as a stereotypical "liberal elitist" outfit showing the Democrats' ugly side. This is neither good for national unity nor Obama's electoral success.

Yes! Of course its satire.
The intentions of The New Yorker is obviously to satirize the miscopcentions about Obama. The intention is good, I believe, because it points out the absurdity of the nature of these misjudgments. However, people who are not familiar with satire, much worse have not encountered the word "satire" all their life, are prone to think that its an attack on Obama. Its a sad thing that the latter is happening and is creating a sensation.

You'll notice though, that Americans, even if they're offended by the burning flag, aren't rioting in the street, or killing New Yorker editors. I'm sort of skeptical that it's Islam that's going to ever bring peace to the world. They haven't brought peace anywhere, ever

This kind of cartoon if nothing new in American or international politics. These kinds of attacks date back all the way to the beginning's of democracy(300-400BC). I would like all the prior poster to please do a little research into the history of political satire/slander and you will find it prevalent in every country where elections are held. Everyone from Ceasar to Obama has had to endure such attacks.

Obama Cartoon stir
While the Cover of the New Yorker is unfortunate, in a real democracy one has to expect this. Many Muslims seem to misunderstand what real democracy is all about. Looking at some of the other comments it is all the more evident that Muslims do not appreciate 'other views'. Although the USA had slavery and segregation today it is ready for a Black president or a president of any other race or ethnicity. But Muslim countries have very far to go.

Think about real issues and future
US population 304 million, New Yorker suscribers 1 million-so satire 'serves' their economic interest. Media needs sizzle-do they report or create the news? Politics yields the worst in bad information. San Francisco proposes to commemorate a sewage plant for President Bush's leadership mess, yet most Americans focus on 'positive' values of religion, family, education, careers and local events. We need to focus on elimination of poverty world-wide. Algae-cleans power plant fumes. Desalination.

It is hard to imagine that the editorial staff at the New Yroker wasn't conscious of the fact that satire or not the very act of circulating that image would only serve to reinforce the perception that Obama is a Muslim - as well as the subsequent negative stereotypes that go along with that. One must ask the standard question.... who's goals does this serve?

Obama/New Yorker cartoon...
Just a brief comment on this issue...For satire to work, readers must be familiar with what 'satire' is they must be educated in how it works. Unfortunately, in the USA today most people (apart from some of the magazine's readers...) are woefully ignorant and lack the ability to discern real satire...All they see is an offensive cartoon that confirms their feelings about Obama. Therefore, the New Yorker, regardless of its protestations, actually panders to this ignorance!

Good satire can often make important political and social points but good satire presupposes that both the satirist and the intended audience share the same mind-set. One of the criticisms laid against the Islamic world by the US is that it cannot cope with criticism well, who cannot cope now?

Obama has a lot of work to do
It's sad that in this day and age a cover like this would be necessary. America is now the land of ignorance and propaganda, and it will take someone like Obama to rescue it. But then we're talking about a country stupid enough to elect George Bush TWICE, so what hope is there? Sad. Very sad.

its no satire
For people to take the mag cover as satirical is very ambitious perspective. Cartoons and depictions in general, in a an immediate sense, confirm the prevalent notions in the society. Hence in this case, it is only going to bolster the 'fears' about Obama's religious affiliations. It's a negative campaign strategy from the anti camp.

Obama cartoon
This is another attempt by certain elements of US society to demonise Muslims and Islam. If Obama is a Muslim so what? So what if he attended an Islamic school? Is it a crime to be Muslim or associated with Islam? The purpose of this cartoon is to get Obama to distance himself from anything to do with Islam and Muslims as it is now seen as bad in the West.

Muslims were framed by US as terrorists for the simple reason that natural wealth lies in middle east and US are opportunists who are both resource and power hungry. And they are by way of hook or crook ready to rip others to keep their supremacy. George Bush and his demonic desire prevails over Obama's will to change. Sad but its the truth...

New Yorker Knows What Its Doing
Hillary vs Obama, and Bush vs Gore, were decided by hairline splits. The New Yorker, cognizant of that, has done this to influence voters who never read the magazine but who will see the cover. The strategy of the New Yorker is obvious. No, it is not meant for those who understand satire. It is meant for those who don't.

As Chris Matthews said, this will be on t-shirts tomorrow. Not a good idea for them to publish that - they gave the Republicans an effective tool to promote their view. They made public what many people think privately, but can't or won't express their opinion. If Obama wins in November, we're doomed.

I'm convinced this whole thing is a tempest in a teapot. The people in America who are the most likely to (mistakenly) believe that Obama is a Muslim are the same people who would never read a magazine like the New Yorker. If anything, this is just another attempt by the American media to stir up discussion about the one thing it ever really seems to care about: itself.

Like others have said it may be satirical for the average reader of the New Yorker, but due to the fact that the average American has not viewed any positive media about Muslims, it is either taken as a fear about Obama or it is seen as an attack on Obama.

While I believe it is just more of people on the right pandering to big interests and propagating misconceptions of Obama, I disagree with what some are saying. In a liberal society anyone has the right to make fun of whatever they want. If I don't want to look at it, I won't. I can make fun of ISLAM, CHRISTIANITY, HINDUISM, whatever I want because FREEDOM OF SPEECH is essential to the health of a democratic country.
