Colombia admits Red Cross misuse
Betancourt and 14 other hostages were
freed from Farc captivity in a daring rescue

Alvaro Uribe, Colombia's president, has said his army used the Red Cross emblem in its June 2 operation to rescue 15 hostages including Ingrid Betancourt.

"We regret that this occurred," Uribe said on Wednesday, following reports that the Red Cross emblem was displayed on a vest worn by a Colombian intelligence officer who took part in the rescue mission.

The officer's name was not disclosed because "we do not want to affect his career", the president said.

The Colombian government issued a formal apology to the ICRC for the incident, which the president called an unauthorised error by a nervous soldier.

Use of the Red Cross symbol for a military operation violates the first Geneva Convention because it would damage the relief group's image of neutrality in conflicts and could endanger medical personnel using the symbol.

Red Cross reminder

Yves Heller, a Bogota-based spokesman for the Red Cross, said: "Parties to the conflict must respect the Red Cross emblem at all times and under all circumstances".

However, Heller said the incident will not effect Red Cross deployment in the country.

"We will continue working in the field in Colombia," he said.

Betancourt, a former Colombian presidential candidate, and the other hostages were rescued in a daring operation by the Colombian military.

Their captors from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) were tricked into handing them over to the intelligence officials disguised as aid workers.

While Betancourt was freed after six years in captivity, some had been helt hostage for as long as 10 years.

red cross emblem
In any war, using red cross emblem by one of the parts is one of the most cheaty, dirty and coward things that can be done. How can we believe nothing from people able to do that?

The Betancourt Story?
First lets make it clear, Mrs Betancourt was theonly Hostage in this rescue! All others were military of some sort, even the three US citizens, all involved in a Civil War. How can the rescue story be believed, as every days we have a new version or detail, that does not match the original script.

Colombia and Uribes administration do not have any credit now and after this Red Cross misuse for a military operation it came to zero.

Enough
It is fantastic that people who were deprived of their freedom now enjoy it. Nevertheless, it is ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE that the Colombian President tries to dismiss the MISUSE of the Red Cross as a personal initiative of a soldier on mission. What will be of the many thousands of people who are still deprived of their freedom all over the world and whose only hope is the respect and neutrality that the Red Cross symbol has and which is now tarnished... Enough is enough!

Pure theater
The whole ¨rescue" is nothing but an attempt to increase the popularity of Uribe. After his involvement with the paramilitaries came to light, his rating nose dived. Had Chavez, Evo o Rafael illegaly used the red cross emblem o bombed another country, you can rest assured that they would have been tried for war crimes. Because Uribe rides on the coat tails of Bush, he to can do as he wishes with total imunity. I think it would be better to investigate why the FARC esxists to begin with.
