Obama cartoon 'insult to Muslims'
Obama's spokesman called the cartoon
"tasteless and offensive" [AFP]

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, has spoken out about the satirical depiction of him and his wife on a magazine cover, calling it an insult to Muslims.

Speaking on Tuesday night on the CNN's Larry King show, Obama said the cartoon, which depicts him and his wife as flag-burning "radicals", did not bother him.

"You know, there are wonderful Muslim Americans all across the country who are doing wonderful things and for this to be used as sort of an insult, or to raise suspicions about me, I think is unfortunate," he said.

Obama blamed himself for not being forceful enough in challenging some of the misconceptions about him, including the false belief held by some Americans that he is a Muslim.

"I do think that, you know, in attempting to satirise something, they probably fuelled some misconceptions about me instead," he said.

"But, you know, that was their editorial judgment. And as I said, ultimately, it's a cartoon, it's not what the American people are spending a lot of their time thinking about."

The cover of The New Yorker magazine, which went on sale on Monday, depicts Obama in what many see as "Muslim clothing" - sandals, robe and turban - while Michelle Obama, his wife, has an assault rifle slung over one shoulder and is dressed in camouflage and combat boots.

Bill Burton, Obama's spokesman, termed it "tasteless and offensive".

David Remnick, The New Yorker editor, has defended the cover, saying it was satirical and was chosen because it had something to say.

Pakistani leaders should object STRONGLY and LOUDLY to Karzai's accusation of Pakistan being responsible for the Consulate bombing & show Karzai up for the traitor that he is.

Obama cartoon insult to Muslims
Everyone knows he is not a Muslim. Perhaps the cartoon is trying to say that his stance on pulling out of Iraq, regardless of the situation, makes him a friend of the terrorists. Put your racial/religious views aside and use your brain.

Obama cartoon insult to Muslims
Constitutional freedom of speech and freedom of the press were not mentioned in this article. Obama himself proclaimed these rights in his response. Fortunately these are rights that are woven as part of the American fabric. As defined bt the NYT editor the cover depicts satire. Unfortunately, there's a critical mass of people who will view this cartoon and make biases based upon visual instead of evidence.

New Yorker Magazine
The cartoon shown on the front page of this pathetic magazine cannot be overlooked by any citizen of our country and it is an insult not to the Muslim religion, but to all Americans. This is not what we as a nation are all about..If it then God help us!!

No, its satire
All of the things depicted in that cartoon where actually things he was criticized for (falsely) in the American mainstream media. On television. Really. The Daily Show has a good clip on it. The fist bump with his wife (gang sign, terrorist fist bump), he attended a madrassa (false - Anderson Cooper no less), the flag pin / hand over heart thing (false), that he's a muslim (false - not there's anything wrong with that), etc... It was a joke told to the wrong audience.

Obama Cartoon
As a frequent and avid reader of the New Yorker (and NY resident) I understand the spirit of the cartoon-meant to chide those that hang on to certain false beliefs about Obama simply to avoid confessing that they are racists. Having said that, this cartoon is problematic because it assumes that 1)there is something wrong with being Muslim and 2) that diplomacy and openness amounts to being allied with terrorism.

New Yorker cover
This article/cover is about the politics of fear. I don't know if the New Yorker chose the best way to depict this concept, but the cover is meant to show what some (mostly on the far right) will do to win this election - play on people's racist and irrational fear. Fear of Blacks, fear of Muslims... the image here is what Fox News tries to create every day. It's ridiculous and offensive when blatently stated, but those that try to scare voters don't do it blatently. That's the point here.
