Gore challenges US to abandon oil
Gore said Americans need to change "not just light bulbs, but laws" [AFP]

Al Gore, Nobel laureate and former US vice president, has urged Americans to shift from electricity generated by fossil fuels to renewable energy within a decade.

Gore challenged Americans to "shoot for the moon" on Thursday, comparing the scale of the challenge to landing a man on the moon, a goal set by John F. Kennedy in the 1960s.

"I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 per cent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years," Gore said.

"When president John F. Kennedy challenged our nation to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely in 10 years, many people doubted we could accomplish that goal," he said.

'Vested interest'

Gore said the shift to new energy sources was needed to ensure "the survival of the United States of America as we know it ... the future of human civilization is at risk," he said.

Critics say the shift to renewable energy could not be achieved by the US and that a decade is not a sufficient amount of time in order to make the transition.

However, Gore dismissed the critics as having "a vested interest in perpetuating the current system no matter how high a price the rest of us will have to pay," and said the shift is necessary in order to avert a disaster and halt climate change.

The chief obstacle to achieving 100 per cent renewable energy in 10 years was a dysfunctional US political system that panders to special interests, said Gore.

Americans need to change "not just light bulbs, but laws," he said.

Political will

Switching over to renewable energy would "cure our carbon addiction and stimulate the economy. It would be the turning point that is needed to lead the world to a stable climate," said James Hansen, director of the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

"Responding to climate change requires the full engagement of national, state and local public officials, business executives, religious and community leaders, and every citizen," said Alden Hayden of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

"By uniting in this common purpose and mobilizing America's ingenuity and can-do spirit, we can rise to this challenge. We can revitalize our economy, increase our energy security, and do our part to cut global warming pollution, all at the same time," he said.

Jonathan Lash, head of the environmental think-tank, the world resources institute, said: "America has led every major technological shift in the last 100 years, and we can lead the next  one as well.

"The problem is not technology, it is political will," he said.

Gore, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year along with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for his work on global warming.

You can hel the planet to!
I think everyone should try to help the planet, even if there was no climate change it would be good for all, men, animals and plants. Myself I always do all my searches on the internet on the site www.treehoo.com that plants trees for most of their profit. The cost for me is 0 the gain for nature is 100%.

They must be giving Nobels away these days
What a dope.. blah blah yes green is good, but I do not see the entire U.S being run off of renewable energy sources in ten years, 1) we're energy hogs, and 2) all the bribes ...uh i mean "lobbyist" from the oil companies. Most politicians should be lined up in front of the Washington monument and shot along with these bastard lobbyists. Gore needs to do his homework, warming and cooling phases have been around for the last 4.5 billion years (or 2000 years for Christians)

Chris, where in the article does Gore call on us to "halt climate change"? If you would listen to what he says, instead of what you expect him to say, you'd get a truer picture of the man.

Hypocrisy
Chris, don't misinterpret what Gore is saying. He means we need to halt climate change caused my human activity. What we're seeing now is very rapid climate change caused by unnaturally high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Gore's main fault is not hubris, it is hypocrisy. What did he do while he was vice president? And look up his deep ties to Occidental Petroleum... he refused to sever ties in spite of awful environmental practices and human rights abuses in Colombia.

Al Gore article
Mr. Gore is the greatest. Fossil fuels are for idiots. We can run cars, jets and power plants with hydrogen from water with current technology so with Bush out of the way maybe the world can move along again.

Al Gore, hippocrit
Mr. Gore should practice what he preaches. He speaks of "going green" Well, maybe his entourage should include a couple less Lincoln Continentals & Chevy Suburbans, neither of which would qualify him for an energy tax credit. I am all for helping out the planet, conservation of resources, etc but Mr. Gore being a hippocrit doesn't make it any easier to listen to his message. If you lead they will follow.

Gore challenge
I don't think the goal should be to eliminate use of fossil fuels. They have proven time and again to be the most efficient way to produce energy. I think we need to loosen up restrictions and allow more refineries to be made to eliminate the supply and demand issue. Also, spending money on making the heavy oil sands in Alberta Canada and off our own shores would decrease our dependence on other countries to provide our fossil fuels, But we could learn from other countries and reduce our use

Gore challenges the US to abandon oil.
Oh my God you Americans will buy anything. How much has Al Gore made out of his Global Warming scaremongering.Heard estimates of $100million.He has a private jet, a huge car and a house using tons more greenhouse gas then many families would.Who is a true believer then?

This is just another plot to profit and profit big, I guess oil has reached its peak and we need other ways to make big business huge profits. The worlds temperature has and always will vary. Ever since the U.S mentioned green, green has been going the pockets of companies like first solar, and all others. No one really cares about the environment , plus ten years is not enough time to become independent from oil. Find more reserves, that is where we need to go in ten years while we convert to G

Idiocracy
When Gore says "halt climate change" it's a sign of complete hybris. The climate has never been and never will be constant. We'll have ice ages and tropical ages to come.

chris, I think gore meant "man made climate change" Even so I think the economic need for alternative energy is greater then the environmental at this point. The World economies simply can't grow much more with the energy limitations of fossil fuels.

"Climate change" as Gore uses the term, refers to the man-made situation, that is happening at an increasingly alarming rate, in direct correlation to our pollution of the atmosphere. Yes there may be shifts towards hotter and colder climates over time, but our man-made problems threaten the very existence of billions of people on the planet, today. The powers that be would have us ignore this fact and watch those billions die of starvation.

As long as there are people like Chris here who continue to deny mans involvement in global warming we are going to struggle to get a global consensus on how to tackle the problem. Yes there has always been warming and cooling on this earth but a simple investigation into earth temps over history shows it has never happened this fast, ever. Of course we can always wait and see what happens if the earth continues to warm rather than actually listening to the scientists that warm of catastrophy...

Challenge us and we will rise
What a great article! Here in the United States, competition is one thing we understand. We love sports and we love to compete. When someone says we can't do something we rise to prove them wrong. I'm ready for the challenge and so are many other scientists and environmental advocates here in the United States. I'm just one chemical engineer, but I know I can make a difference. So can we all

Bravo Gore. This is exactly the discussion needed to generate the momentum necessary. Chris, why bother throwing technical trivialities forward? Focus on the issue.

Just because the world goes through periodic climate shifts is no reason to accelerate the process. We should do every thing we can to stop this spiral into the unknown before we destroy ourselfs. The US is certainly capable of destroying the world for us all.

Idiocracy Chris
People like Chris are the ones that have us in this mess now. If we had listened to Carter all those years ago we would not be dependent on oil now, but then of course the multi-nationals would not be so wealthy either. Wake up fools, no more drilling for oil, drill for new ideas stemming from new technology and not crisis capital, this "Chris" mentallity could keep us controlled for ever. I have never been a real fan of Al Gore, but this time he is dead on!

A noble challenge
I believe this is a fair challenge for the American people, and that if, indeed, they rise up to the challenge, it would put them back on the forefront of the worlds' economies, rather than on the tail end as they currently are now.

The current climate is a product of two key factors. There is a natural climate fluctuation. But if tons of carbon is released into the atmosphere from below the surface, there is obviously going to be a carbon increase in the atmosphere, resulting in a temperature increase. Are the claims exaggerated. Yeah. But will a switch off oil benefit the planet. Yeah. A switch from oil to renewable energy is the next global technological jump we need to make.

climate change
Of course the natural progression of climate change is out of our control. The human contribution, however, is in our control. Reducing carbon emissions is an obtainable goal to a least worst scenario.

What he meant Chris, if you have watched his documentary, is that he wants man made global warming to cease. Unless of course you are going to claim that the huge amount of pollution we are dumping in the atmosphere, water and earth is normal. If that's the case then I suppose all the people who die of cancer and other pollution related illnesses also died of 'normal' causes.

Challenge to abandon oil
The world's economic and technological leaders MUST develop renewable, clean energy (fuel) for factories, homes and transportation. Global warming and environmental pollution put everyone on this planet at risk (even the wealthy oil barrons). The trillions wasted on the Iraq war could have been better spent in research/development of such technology and applications. With oil at $140/barrel, the world's economies can't sustain such inflation. It's a matter of survival and economic necessity.

Focus on the issue
Great....The evil U.S., Climate change, Cancer. What we need to do is reduce, dramatically the dependence on Oil, coal, and other fossil fuels. Take the politicians out of the equation and we could all get this done in 10 years! As a republican, I have to be honest and say that Gore and his "sky is falling" routine is tiresome. This article, however, is dead on right no matter who it comes from. Selfish focus on hate, bias, prejudice, and lack of common sense is the real enemy.

Oil and cars
One of the biggest challenges facing any attempt to rid humanity of their 'oil addiction' is finding a viable alternative to cars that run of oil based fuels. Bio-fuels are being put forward as the soloution, but with the looming world food crisis as well as the fact that bio-fuels are not much better than oil based fuels environmently, they don't seem to have a lot going for them. They way forward maybe in developing electric cars which produce zero emissions and can be charged using renewables
