US election diary: 'Iron lady'

Has McCain damaged his reputation by picking Sarah Palin? [Reuters]

Alert readers of this blog will recall instantly that I suggested Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, might be a good vice-presidential choice for John McCain, the Republican candidate, several months ago.

In focus

In-depth coverage of the US presidential election

But I never thought he'd actually do it. And now that he has, I'm not so sure it was a great choice.

First, the Palin pro's: Choosing her shows McCain is able to think outside the box and inject some excitement and buzz into his campaign.

She's attractive, young, a reformer and an apparently honest politician in the spectacularly corrupt political culture of Alaska.

By picking her McCain has pleased the Republican party's right wing, its social conservatives and its fervent anti-abortion contingent.

She's fiscally prudent, a feisty campaigner and extremely popular in her state.

And she's a woman.

That's the obvious reason why McCain chose her.

And she immediately made a direct appeal to Hillary Clinton's supposedly disgruntled voters with talk once again of shattering the 'glass ceiling' that prevents women from rising to top positions in business and government.

The Clinton vote

But the supposed political value of Palin's gender as a lure to those Hillaryophiles seems to me to be an illusion.

First of all, the women voting for Clinton presumably agreed with her about protecting abortion rights, ending the war in Iraq and establishing universal health care.

Why would those women now completely abandon their political orientation entirely simply to support a female politician?

Furthermore, the appeal to the Clinton loyalists seems to me to be a trifle condescending — as if McCain and his strategists were throwing a bone to women, expecting them to vote for anyone so long as she was a woman.

And from the emails sent to some of the blogs since the Palin choice was made public, it appears many women feel the choice is demeaning and an insult to women's intelligence.

But the biggest reason why McCain's choice may backfire is that it is blatantly political.

Sarah Palin may be a fine governor and a wonderful wife and mother, but no one can seriously contend that she is prepared to be president.

And that eviscerates the whole narrative of the Republican campaign against Barack Obama - that he's too inexperienced to lead the country.

Palin has served less than two years as governor of Alaska.

Before that she was mayor of Wasilla — a small town near Anchorage.

She has no foreign policy experience whatsoever.

Her resume is so slim that McCain was reduced, bizarrely, to referring repeatedly to her athletic prowess.

And I winced when Palin listed as part of her qualifications that she had been active in the PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) at her children's school.

Many conservatives expected national security and experience to be the themes of the Republican convention in St Paul next week. So much for that idea.

McCain has attacked Obama - unfairly - for putting his own political career over the national interest.

Now he has done exactly that.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to choose Sarah Palin other than as an obvious ploy to grab enough women's votes to put McCain into the White House.

Katrina connection

If elected, McCain would be the oldest person ever to take the oath of office for the first time.

He has a history of cancer.

And he would allow an utterly inexperienced person just a heartbeat away from the presidency?

That doesn't speak well of McCain's judgment, not to mention his ability to put the good of the country over his personal political fortunes.

And that calls into question one of McCain's perceived biggest assets — his integrity.

There's a new hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, churning its way toward New Orleans, with landfall due around Monday, the opening day of the Republican convention.

There's been talk of rescheduling some of the events to avoid the unpleasant reminders of  the criminally inept way the Bush administration handled hurricane Katrina.

As Katrina hit Louisiana exactly three years ago, George Bush was attending a fundraiser in Arizona for — guess who? John McCain.

If the Republicans were smart, they wouldn't just delay their convention. They'd cancel the whole thing.

Thank you for your brilliant article. I thought McCains joke about Iran was the first sign that this guy thinks a little laugh can 'sort out' anything - he has really embarrassed himself with his latest joke. How can he possibly compare this woman (as sweet and decent as she may be) to Hillary Clinton. Does he seriously think ANY woman will do? Were his advisers unaware or asleep? OR is this even worse than bad judgement? What a tragedy - the grand scale of ignorance of the American voters

Points overlooked
McCain has been facing the prospect of Libertarians and Libertarian leaning conservatives voting for Bob Barr costing him the election just as Ross Perot did to Bush Sr. Palin's small government and anti-corruption record will appeal hugely to these groups. Also,American politics have been forever dominated by old rich white men. McCain can't help the fact he fits the steroetype but he picked a running mate who does not. Obama however chose one who fit it exactly. Where is the change in that?

Republican party is throwing the election
This selection makes the Republican ticket probably the weakest, most inept presidential ticket in US history at a time when the US is facing a train wreck which threatens to destroy the nation as it now exists. The republicans know this and do not want to be in the driver's seat as it happens. This is an excellent article. As of yesterday, Ms Palin did not know what the duties of the Vice President are, according to her own answer to an interviewer's question. They do not want to win.

McCain severely miscalculated with this token pick he needs to win Ohio and Michigan, not just evengelicals. How can she relate to people in the mid-west on economic issues when her state has no industry and massive surpluses? I guarantee you she will not open her mouth to reporters or the public except to talk about her family and drilling for oil. I really hope Biden forces her into some detailed discussions about foreign and domestic policy during the debate and show how vaucous she is.

Setting aside her lack of relevant accomplishments and her inexperience in national and international affairs that make her singularly unqualified to be VP (especially with a 72 year old president), McCain's selection of Sarah Palin will provide great motivation for the pro-Hillary camp within the Democratic camp to throw their total support behind Barak Obama.

Its sad when...
Canadians know more about American history then Americans. Good point Nick about Truman. Clearly this op-ed is Dem biased, and I think some people love to over think it. If you actual look into her history, albiet short, she has a track record of getting work done. In the end I don't care who gets in, man, women, black, martian... in the end you need someone who can get the US back to where it should be.

Apparently they don't teach history so well in Canada either. Harry Truman spent 10 years as a U.S. Senator and chaired the well known Truman Commission that rooted out corruption among war profiteers during WWII.

As an American living in London, I would like to correct your writer who claimed that Truman had no experience to be President. He spent his entire life in politics locally (Missouri), nationally and served as Vice President before Roosevelt's death. Hillary supporters will not support Palin and Republican exurbia women strenuously booed Palin when she spoke well of Senator Clinton. Yes, of course, she is a gimmick of The Joker.

Palin selection
Palin is an excellent choice. If McCain loses this election, he should quit. The new Republicans have pulled out all the stops. Game plan consists of white racism against blacks, Obama being both Muslim and radical black Christian, Palin to draw in outraged Clinton females, Palin being anti woman's birth rights, Palin being intelligent design advocate, etc. Obama will lose worse than previous Democrat.

Poorly chosen
After a little research, Palin has a remarkable history of poor decision making for someone with so little experience. Look up the Wasilla Multi-use Sports Complex to see how good a mayor she was. Look up "Troopergate", "Shadow Governor", and the polar bear law suit to see her history as a governor. She was elected because she pushed an anti-corruption platform and is turning out to be no better. There are even allegations that her 5th child is her 16 year old daughter's. McCain chose poorly.

I am a senior citizen who's husband fought in Vietnam and who's son served in the Marines. I cannot comprehend how supposedly intelligent people could seriously support this knee-jerk reactionary woman who could end up as Commander and Chief of the USA. I don't know what people around the world are really thinking, but I hope they are as horrified as I am. All she knows is how to attack whatever comes in the cross-hairs of her scope. Obama is a deep thinker, has grace, and self control.

Sarah Palin is just what the US needs right now. To think the Republican's are trying to throw the election is absurd. Sarah palin has two months to surprise and impress the world. Iron Lady has no experience so?
They made the same complaint about Truman remember? He showed he could take very tough decisions ended one savage war, prevented a worse one in Korea by corralling MacArthur, desegregated the US armed forces, authorised the Marshall plan to rebuild Europe, presided over the creation of NATO, faced down the Soviets with the Berlin Airlift, created the CIA, the National Security COuncil and the US Air Force, recognised Israel etc. Prior governing experience? So, let me get this straight...McCAIN hops all over the Democrats for their lack of "international experience", and then he picks a running mate who is the governor of a remote US state, who claims she is a " hockey mom" ( there are lots of them here in Canada) and whose previous job was being the mayor of a town of 8,500 people? This is the best he could do?

Palin as U.S. VP?
I disagree with the previous posters in fact, I think it was a strategically brilliant move! Despite her slim resume (which characterizes Obama as well, I might add), she is tough, strong and strongly independent, a shrewd thinker, and staunchly epitomizes much of the conservative, core American values which defines 'middle America'. In other words, she can complement McCain, and reinforce his perceived weaknesses in other areas. Was it a political ploy, just to get votes? Of course it was!

Rob Reynolds is obviously left of center - no doubt favors the disaster in the making the community organizer from Chicago... naturally, he thinks McCain picked the wrong person. Well.. Reynolds and his ilk will find out on November 5th that he missed it by a mile. She's the perfect selection and the two of them will put the Democratic candidate away by about 10 points in November.

Any woman who supported Hilliary would be nuts to vote for McCain simply because he has Sarah Palin as his VP pick. Her views are diametrically opposed to Clinton's. Most will not be deterred from voting for Obama. That said, we'll see how many do switch because they so sorely want to see an executive woman.

Couldn't someone give this woman a comb? It's a pity her personal endowments don't seem to include the ability to think, which might have given her the humility to decline McCain's proposition. But she could surely comb her hair? It takes courage to bear a Down's syndrome child and implicitly to commit to that child's upbringing. What will happen to that baby now? What a betrayal.

Many women are "ga-ga" over Mr. Obama and will vote for him basically because he is a good family man who does not cheat on his wife. Just because it is a women running will not change that. Experience or inexperiece is seldom the issue. Mr. Obama does not have much of that either. Personnal character is what is prime in many voter's mine. The question becomes how settled are Mrs. Palin's and Mr. McCain's marital affairs.

Least Corrupt
McCain made an excellent choice for Vice Presidential running mate. Sure she has less that 2 years experience as a governor and prior to that was the mayor of a small town that had less residents than an average community college has students. And sure, McCain had to go all the way to an obscure part of Alaska to find her, but she is the least corrupt Republican out there. At the moment, she is under only ONE investigation for ethics violation. For a Republican candidate, she's a saint.

Will they be a fight on the convention floor over her becoming president? why should the grand old party fight over her being vice. If she is found guilty of abusing her power while in office. In 1988, Pres. Bush I chose Dan Quayle as his running mate, and got away with it because (1) he was following the popular presidency of Ronald Reagan, (2) he was not entering his presidency at the advanced age of 72, and (3) he was running against the charismatically challenged Michael Dukakis. McCain has just undercut the main theme of his campaign, that Obama is too inexperienced to be President.

US Election!
Election time brings stories of all kind. One from a wily politician: A person irritated by the attitude of his longtime barber, stepped into a new saloon and took the swivel chair. There was a growling Doberman at his feet. He enquired the barber reason for presence of the salivating Doberman. “ Oh! It is nothing, he is there to pick up the nicked pieces of ears. He is eager for some, as usual!’ For US, this way or that, it is nicks all the way!

Palin has a few years as mayor of a town of 6,000 or so and 1.5 years as Gov. of a state with a big surplus and 700,000 residents. She has a BsC in Communications. Obama was a State Senator in the Illinois 13th District for seven years. It has a population greater than Alaska. He has been a United States Senator for 3.5 years, including serving on the Foreign Relations, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security Committees. He taught Constitutional Law. Palin brought up Truman last night: first of all Harry was a Democrat, who replaced vice president Henry A. Wallace as Roosevelt's running mate in 1944. He succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died less than three months after he began his fourth term and was not actually elected until his second term. Harry was a folksy, unassuming president. Truman's public opinion ratings reached the lowest point yet recorded for any United States president until George W. Bush. Can you say Korean War.
