Iran 'faces further sanctions'
Iran says its nuclear programme is only
for peaceful purposes [AFP]

Western powers have agreed to consider further United Nations sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme after it failed to respond adequately to an incentives offer.

Britain said the six major powers involved in the talks had agreed in a joint telephone call they had "no choice" but to pursue further sanctions.

A US state department spokesman also said they were considering the "possible outlines" of a resolution on sanctions.

The call for further sanctions followed a one-page letter sent by Iran to major powers on Tuesday containing no reply to an offer by Russia, China, the US, Germany, Britain and France of further talks and an incentives package if Iran freezes expansion of its nuclear work.

Western powers accuse Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons but Iran says its programme is only for peaceful energy purposes.

'No firm agreement'

However, Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the UN, said there was no definite agreement among the six powers for a fourth round of sanctions against Iran.

"It may well be that in the course of those discussions some members of the six raised the issue of the sanctions," Churkin said.

"But to the best of my knowledge there has been no firm agreement or understanding or concerted work in this regard."

Churkin also said Moscow had not set a deadline for Iran to respond to the offer, and that ministers from the six powers would meet in September to discuss Iran.

Al Jazeera's correspondent at the UN, John Terret, said according to UN sources, nothing concrete would happen until the UN General Assembly meets in September, when the six powers would have the chance to try to convince Iran to get on board or get the unanimity needed for sanctions.

Also, a senior official from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, is heading to Tehran on Thursday to try to offer the Iranians the clarification they are seeking on the offer, he said.

'Clear choice'

Kim Howells, a British foreign office minister, said the UK was disappointed by Iran's response so far.

"Iran has a clear choice: Engagement or isolation. We regret that Iran's leaders appear to have chosen isolation," he said.

"If Iran continues to refuse to come to the negotiating table, the international pressure on Iran will only grow," he said.

The UK had warned that a lack of a positive answer from Tehran by the end of Tuesday would prompt the six powers to ask the UN Security Council to take further punitive measures.

The new deadline was set after Iran ignored a previous demand to respond by last weekend to the proposed package, insisting no such deadline had been set.

The UN has already imposed three sets of sanctions against Iran over the dispute.

Israel, which is concerned about a threat from a potentially nuclear Iran, said on Thursday that Iran was trying to buy time by giving "evasive" replies and the UN should impose strong sanctions.

"Every day that the centrifuges continue to spin brings Iran closer to a nuclear weapons capability and threatens the stability and security of the region and the world," Sallai Meridor, Israel's ambassador to the United States, said.

Tensions were again heightened on Monday when Iran said it had successfully test-fired an anti-ship missile with a range of 300km that would allow it to close the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman, one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes.

About the accusations against Iran
The US has developed the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, a plan in which the US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and China would become the exclusive suppliers of nuclear fuel for all nuclear plants in all 188 NPT-countries. It would make all NPT-customers very dependent. The suppliers could simply stop the uranium supply to make a country obey to their orders immediately... Iran is the test-case for this plan.

why shouldn't all nations have the right to access nuclear energy? instead of withdrawing from Iran, you think that the elected officials of the west would be a little more persuasive by actually talking and interacting instead of shunning and slapping hands.

Iran will suffer a humiliating defeat for bullying the civilized world. They can't fool the world with their 20 years of secretive nuclear program. Their intention is the bomb only. The regime existence depends on this. Having a nuclear bomb is similar to handing out a loaded gun to a 2 year old child.

Iran Nuclear power
The only reason they are pushing this so hard is Israel, they are frightened. But Israel has over 200 undeclared nuclear warheads, chemical and biological weapons, they are not subject to international inspections. I think part of the deal should be that Israel has to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, declare all their weapons programs and allow international inspections. Iran are a lot more open about what they are doing than Israel!

Inalienable Right of Iran.
As signer of the NPT, Non Proliferation Treaty, Iran is right to fight for full nuclear process. The treaty gives Iran Inalienable Right of access to enrichment of the ore up to experimental research. Inalienable Right means what ever happened before or after joining ranks. It is something that cannot be taken away, for whatever reason. Iran has the right to live in peace in its own way, just like everyone else.

This is very absurd att the west want to decide over other countries and uses double standard. Iran has every right to have nuclear technology. The west wants iran's oil. It's all about that just like Iraq's case. oil...oil...oil

Hypocrisy
The United States has used nuclear weapons twice already. It is the only country to have ever used this weapon of mass destruction. It recently started a war with Iraq under false pretexts. Now, it doubts the veracity of Iran? That is just too rich.

Irans two options
Almost completely isolated politically Iran today has two options:- 1. Accept stopping of nuclear enrichment and forever live on the mercy of Western powers 2. Stick to their rights and face devastating attack and millions of deaths.(this because it is impossible to beat Iran without resorting to tactical nuclear weapons) Which one do you these options do you guys think Iran should prefer. Personally I think it is a very difficult question.

Unless members of the security council agree to destroy their atomic bombs, any emphasis on security coming from the member’s mouth is naturally viewed as contradiction in terms.

Iran and its options.
A peaceful world is out of the question. We all know the super powers or the so called major players will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons.I say Iran has the right to acquire nuclear technology if the rest of the world has them.If they do get attacked by either Israel or the US,we are looking at,as it is already in progress,a third world war and pretty much the gradual deterioration and destruction of mankind. This world will never be the same....

Question
I would like to know the effect these sanctions are having on the Republic of Iran. I hear of restrictions on Government and Military officials for travel and restrictions on the banking industry. But Iran stands firm and they do not seem too bothered either. I guess these sanctions are not affecting their economy or their people? How long is this ladder for sanctions?

Injustice
The people around the world know Iran has the right for nuclear energy. She has followed the regulation set by the agency. The problem is in the so called free world, you are only charged of a crime if there is enough evidence against you, but out side of their border any thing goes. there is no evidence iran is doing any wrong but has already been charged. hopefully acts like this will wake up the world to what the american and british are up to.

Fools
All of you folks here who defend Iran's right to develop nuclear technology will sadly be the beneficiary of the glowing radiation that will ultimately waft across the globe from the nuclear attacks that Iran has planned agains israel and the west. They are building weapons and missile systems to deliver them. There is no point in discussing who has the right to nukes... Iran must be stopped.
