'Many still have doubts' over 9/11

Many find it hard to accept the official version of what happened on 9/11 [GALLO/GETTY]

More than 50 per cent of people reject the official belief that the attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, were carried out by al-Qaeda, a new survey has revealed.

The findings, released late on Wednesday, suggest that the official version of events - that the attacks, which killed more than 2,900 people and sparked the US so-called "war on terror", were carried out by al-Qaeda - is still a long way from being generally accepted.

Only 46 per cent of respondents named al-Qaeda, while 25 per cent said they did not know and 15 per cent said the US government was behind the attacks.

Steven Kull, the director of WorldPublicOpinion.org, which carried out the survey, told Al Jazeera: "Broadly what this says is that there is a lack of confidence with the United States and so people mistrust the narrative the US puts forward."

Officially, hijackers took control of four passenger aircraft in the September 11 attacks. Two of the aeroplanes crashed into the World Trade Centre in New York and the "Twin Towers" subsequently collapsed, bringing down two other buildings nearby. The third aircraft hit the Pentagon while the fourth is said to have crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Kull's organisation asked more than 16,000 people world wide "Who do you think was behind the 9/11 attacks?", leaving the question open-ended.

Blaming Israel

While a substantial number of those polled believed the US government was in some way behind the attacks, seven per cent point the finger at Israel.

The 2001 attacks prompted the so-called US 'war on terror' [EPA]
Of the countries surveyed, Egypt and Jordan had the highest percentages of people who believed Israel was behind the attack, polling 43 and 31 per cent respectively. Nineteen per cent of those polled in the Palestinian territories claimed Israel was in some way responsible.

"In Muslim countries - where we've carried out a number of focus groups - it's clear there is a feeling that the US had some kind of motivation, such as invading Iraq," Kull said.

"There are also some difficulties with the idea that Muslims carried out attacks on civilians - which is widely seen as wrong and contrary to Islam... And there are plenty of people in Muslim countries who say it would have been too technically difficult [for al-Qaeda] to pull off."

In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, a majority 57 per cent said they did not know who was behind the attacks. Only five per cent said that Israel had been involved.

'Conspiracy theorists'

In 2002, the US government set up the 9/11 commission, chaired by Thomas Kean, a former governor of New Jersey, to investigate the event. It published its report in 2004, concluding that the 19 hijackers were all members of al-Qaeda. It also concluded that there had been intelligence failures on the part of the CIA and the FBI, the US's spy agencies.

But the World Trade Centre attacks quickly proved fertile ground for "conspiracy theorists" and sceptics have a wide range of alternative theories to choose from - including that US military personnel were involved in the attack or that the towers were brought down with the help of a controlled explosion.

"There are people who are saying that US soldiers were flying the planes ... or people who say simply that the US government turned a blind eye to the threat or that they somehow got them to do it through some means," said Kull.

One of the proponents of an alternative version of the events has been Willis Carto, editor of the American Free Press newspaper, which frequently points the finger of blame at Israel.

He told Al Jazeera the attacks were "perpetrated by the Israeli Mossad [secret service] in conjunction with the American government".

"There's no real evidence whatsoever that the official story of the planes smashing into the building was true. It's impossible to believe that a few furtive little characters armed with box cutters who had no idea how to fly ... could have manouvred the planes like this," Carto said.

"There are so many holes in the story that no one in his right mind can believe it."

Classroom politics

Those who expound alternative versions of the events have themselves become the targets for debunking. Loose Change, a popular series of internet videos that counters the official version of events, has itself inspired a blog called Screw Loose Change.

More than 2,900 people died in the attacks of September 11, 2001 [GALLO/GETTY]
Reports in engineering publications have sought to counter alternative theories that say the towers could not have collapsed as they did simply by being hit by an aircraft.

In 2007, research by Keith Seffen, a senior lecturer in Cambridge University's engineering department, used analysis of an engineering model to show the tower collapse had been "quite ordinary and natural".

The US has also seen the debate enter the university classroom.  Both Ward Churchill, of the University of Colorado, and Kevin Barrett, of the University of Wisconsin, provoked a public outcry over the fact they professed to believe alternative versions of the events.

Their critics feared the academics might be tempted to bring there beliefs into the classroom. Their supporters said that even if they did, a university classroom was the place for alternative theories.

'Structural failure'

Michael Newman, from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Nist), which worked for several years on reports about how and why the World Trade Centre towers collapsed, told Al Jazeera the debate was unlikely to ever go away.

"Whenever we put out one of our reports, we get phone calls and emails from those with alternative views," he said.

"And you always get a lot of interest around the time of the anniversary - it's a part of history now.

The Nist reports say the towers' collapse was due to "structural failure" after the aeroplanes hit them. The reports have been welcomed by building code regulators and many of Nist's recommendations from its investigations have been adopted, but those with alternative viewpoints have continued to dispute the organisation's findings.

"We've heard opinions from all sides," Newman told Al Jazeera.

"At the end of the day, people are entitled to their own opinions and we probably won't be able to convince them otherwise."

9/11 Poll
I've met a hand full of "truthers." They tend to have the same qualities. 1. have never traveled outside of the U.S. 2. have little to no knowledge of what the Naksa is or Arab/ Israeli conflict. 3. Can get sucked in to any conspiracy theory. Even David Ike's lizard people. Bottom line is it appears to be the fear of being vulnerable. The disbelief of it all is rationalized by blaming something the government. Probably helps them sleep at night.

well what to say, u know at last someone focused on this issue again, i mean its quiet obvious there was no way that US could invade Afghanistan and Iraq without showing its people and congress a wrong picture which i think they did successfully and now as u see they have occupied a very important stratigical area and are pushing for Pakistan aswell so that they could easily control Russia and China in the area , i absolutely agree that Isreal and Bush Administration were behind the 9\11.

Way to go Al Jazeera
Thank you Al Jazeera for taking a bold step in letting the world actually analyze whether 9/11 was an inside job or as the official report goes done by Al Qaida. I believe the US needed an excuse for their war on Islam, so for a few years they fooled the world until Iraq happened. I know that the american media will not even touch on this. Which is why Al Jazeera is there to atleast let us think about an alternative truth to the official report.

The U.S. government is way too incompetent to pull off the cover up. People on the 4th plane were calling there loved ones and said "there Arabs." Al-Qaeda took credit. Actually, if I was a member of Al-Qaeda I'd be offended that people are giving credit to G.W.Bush. But the conspiracy sells books, movie tickets, and magazines

9/11 - Inside Job.
The inconsistancies and doubts began emerging right from the start and the outcome is an endless war against the Muslim world - a new crusade. There is no doubt in my mind that the US government had a hand in this. Even the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) website states that in order to justify a war with Iraq an event of the magnitude of Pearl Harbour would be required to get US public support.

9/11 and conspiracy theories
Many holes exist in the official conspiracy theory. Some US citizens don't want to contemplate the fact that, at times in history, elements of governments have planned to and attacked their own citizenry. Operation Northwoods (check Wikipedia) is an example of recent US history with official, high level planning. This doesn't prove anything about 9/11, but does show that the US government is certainly capable of planning attacks on "itself". Educated citizens remain wary. Cheers!

Exotic Theories
Nothing to be done to change the minds of those with the more exotic theories. One thing that seems evident is the further away from Ground Zero the commentator, the more deluded the theory. If you have never been to the USA - or even west of Istanbul you cannot know what happened here just as we cannot know what is happening there. But guys don't jump to ludicrous conclusions based on nothing but prejudice and paranoia just because they fit your world view.

In a world where we are concentrating just on the negative, the wrong, the black, ....., we can see how humans are capable of horrible attrocities, deadly schemes, how far religion can go terribly wrong for some, and how being right can cause so much wrong. Two wrongs don't make it right and certainly neither do three. I guess anything is possible but how much is likely. Think we'll ever know the truth?

Conspiracies are told only to shift the blaim fro the real culprits. It is a tool of propaganda. The reasons given are unfounded. If the US wanted an enemy to assist the military complex, there was already one in place in Iraq. Bush had a war to start before 9/11 making this idea useless. Plus you could never get a large group in the White House capable of doing this without leakage. leaks happen ALL the time. Something on this magnitude is impossible. Simple explainations are usually the cause

I remember the shock on 9-11 not only of seeing the towers collapse, but also of the outbreak of joy in the West bank and Gaza and Baghdad. It was a day when the world was divided between Good and Evil and it was very clear to see through the prejudice and identify exactly who stands on which side of the divide. The real question is has the Islamic world worked out how a creed that speaks of peace could have been corrupted to such an extent the muslems could carry out such a deed.

This is a very difficult discussion. Everybody is relying on diffrent sources of information on any media and nobody knows the real truth. However lets take a closer look at the facts. Why would anybody want to attack Afghanistan??? This country doesn't have any recourcess that are valuable and its of no greater strategic meaning. Why would you kill 2900 of your own people just to invade such a country?

We are not accustomed to it and forget
In the U.S. we are so trapped by our on own media that we cannot reflect on all those we have harmed. Therefore, we cannot extrapolate from the experience to understand how other can have the same anger at us. This is sad. Equally sad is the delusion that religious people are incapable of violence. Fanatic, unreasoning belief is the hallmark of religion. It is little different political self interest motivated by greed. The naked truth all are motivated by power over others and control.

For Daniel... I suggest you offer some facts rather than expressing your personal feelings. Subjectly looking at all the evidence and actions before and after that event will create doubt on the validity of the US government's statements. Searching for the truth is the most respectful act, looking for real closure for the families and friends of those who died or were seriously injured. For Chris: Cellphones cannot work in airplanes at cruising altitudes as they are out of tower range. Hmm...

The attack on 9/11 was sad for TWO reasons...for the lives lost and for the hatred that formed against all Muslims. The hatred that developed towards the Muslim community made me ashamed of the U.S. If people here had applied that same logic to the Oklahoma bombings, then we should hate all white, young males.

9/11
As an American, I have often been dismayed over the years by actions perpetuated by the U.S. government. However, it is absolutely absurd and ignorant to believe that the U.S. government was involved in the attacks of 9/11. Yes, Bush/Cheney shamelessly used the attacks to pursue their policy initiatives, but to believe that the U.S. government instigated the attacks is not credible. As my good friend, Hamada says, false conspiracy theories in the Middle East are as prevalent as grains of sand.

I commend Al-Jazeera on its reporting. This article presents the results of a public opinion survey and mentions different explanations for an event it does not endorse any one of those explanations. Sadly, though, several responders appear as cognitively incapable of seeing Muslims responsible for violence as so many U.S. Americans are when regarding their own behavior. The similarity is striking. Perhaps humanity will advance when finally people look soberly upon the actions of "their own."

Saddam Hussein might have been scum -he certainly is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Arabs - but as a result of the war Iran is stronger - does that put us in a better position? Good Points Dan, But...
Trying to talk sense to regular readers of Al Jazeera is futile. Have traveled recently to many Gulf and Arab states, and as you can see from the other talkbacks for this article, the lunatic conspiracy theories about the U.S. and Israel are completely ensconced in both predominantly Arab and Muslim countries. I find the response to be surprisingly stupid. People employed by the US government are intrinsically incapable of the deviousness that responders are attributing to them. However they tend not to cut other peoples heads off on video for ideological reasons or strap explosives to mentally challenged girls and send them into crowded market places to kill innocent bystanders. As an average UK citizen, i feel i can safely say i have been exposed to most of the stories about 9/11: official and unofficial. The one thing i can be SURE about is not to trust the word of government. The alliance between Britain and the USA has been far too close. It is a very sad day when survey results like these are reality. Until such time as the Arab and Muslim world can take an honest look at itself this war will continue. The idea that this couldn't happen as it's against Islam is laughable given that the worst human rights violation in the world at this time are happening exclusively in Islamic countries. The most disturbing matter is the fact that the planes in question were never intercepted in any way. These aircraft were clearly way off of course in a country that prides itself on its defence network yet no moves were made. Sadly I am of the opinion that there was indeed a conspiracy amongst interested party nations/states to manufacture a situation so as provoke a war scenario with the tacit agreement of the American people and the American allies.Classic black flag operation.

I agree with the theory of the US being behind the attack of 9/11. The reasons i believe so is stated in the article. And if you all recall on the day of the attack, how is it that only after a few hours, Bush was able to say that Al Qaida is behind the attack. He declared it without even waiting a couple of days.

There are times certain issues should not be trivalised by debets, people should not be beclouded by religious/political sentiments on some obvious issues and 9/11 is one of them. Isreal, USA, al-Qaeda, Muslims, Christians, Jews, or who ever did this most unacceptable act of injustice against heaven and earth will not go unpunished, either by man or God, and the punishment is not very far from today. appreciating the Programe War on Iraq
Just want to say good-work to th prducers and especially the presenter of the programme. as I watch the programme from my country, Nigeria, I feel my tears for the opprssed people of Iraq whom the US hypocrites have stolen their peace and smashed on the rocky stable of selfish quest for occupation, dry up. I hope that one that the world will through your programme come to savvy the depth of America's hypocrisy in Afghanistan and Iraq. God bles Aljazeera.
