Chile to host Bolivia crisis summit

Michelle Bachelet, Chile's president, has called for an emergency summit of South American leaders in the wake of deadly clashes between pro- and anti-government supporters in Bolivia.

Bachelet, who leads the 12-nation Union of South American Nations, said on Saturday that the meeting will be held in Chile on Monday.

At least eight people have been killed in gun battles in the breakaway eastern Bolivian province of Pando since Friday, when Evo Morales, the Bolivian president, declared martial law there.

Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's president and a strong ally of Bolivia, said on Saturday that he will attend the emergency talks.

"A larger tragedy has to be avoided," he said.

'Ambush' claim

Morales' declaration of martial law in Pando came after 16 people – most of them Morales supporters - were killed in what the government called an ambush.

Pando and three other pro-independence provinces are opposed to a new constitution and land reform plan.

Opposition leaders want Morales to cancel a December referendum on a new constitution that would lend him greater powers and the chance to run for a second consecutive term in office.

The draft constitution would also allow state authorities to transfer fallow land to landless peasants.

Morales, who is Bolivia's first indigenous president, agreed to hold talks with the governors of the breakaway provinces before imposing martial law on Pando.

But he has said he will extend martial law across the other three opposition provinces should the situation deteriorate there.

The clashes in Bolivia come after Morales and Chavez expelled the US ambassadors in their countries.

The charge that Washington is promoting an anti-government agenda inside their countries, claims denied by US officials.

Morales said on Saturday that "Brazilian and Peruvian assassins under the command of the governor of Pando" were responsible for the deadly ambush of government supporters on Thursday.

But Leopoldo Fernandez, Pando's governor, said that the violence near the provincial capital Cobija was an armed clash between rival groups, and not an ambush.

Trouble in S. America=USA
The United states should stop meddling in the affairs of other nations. Since the democratic election of leftist presidents in South America the US has begun an insidious diplomatic campaign to undermine these governments from internally. On top of this it has the audacity to tell the russians to leave S.Ossetia (majority ethnic russian population) alone. US hippocracy at its highest.

Bolivia crisis summit
The split in Bolivia is mostly contrived. Their unfortunate racism helps rich insiders con eastern Bolivian latino workers into opposing their own best interests. Morales should stay in office as long as it takes to bring socialism to everyone. The Chile summit is a test of Bachelet, not Morales, a civilized man who deserves the support of all civilized people. Glen Roberts,iammyownreporter.com
