Ahmadinejad: US empire nearing end

George Bush gave his last general assembly
speech as president [Reuters]

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has criticised the administration of George Bush, the US president, saying the "American empire ... is reaching the end" in a speech at the annual UN general assembly.

In a confrontational speech on Tuesday in New York, he said: "The American empire in the world is reaching the end of its road, and its next rulers must limit their interference to their own borders."

He also said that Israel's "Zionist regime" was headed for collapse.

Addressing 120 world leaders, he said that Israel was manipulating Europeans and Americans.

"The Zionist regime is on a definite slope to collapse, and there is no way for it to get out of the cesspool created by itself and its supporters," he told delegates.

On the subject of Iran's nuclear programme, he said that Iran would "resist" Western bullies attempting to prevent the country acquiring civilian nuclear technology, which western nations are fearful could be used to develop nuclear weapons.

'Defending Iran's rights'

Refering to the US and its allies he said: "They oppose other nations' progress and tend to monopolise technologies and to use those monopolies in order to impose their will on other nations."

He said that Iran "will continue to defend its rights".

"The Iranian nation is for dialogue. But it has not accepted and will not accept illegal demands."

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera's senior political analyst in New York, said: "This speech was quite high on generalities and low on specifics.

"It was almost deflated of any particulars. And certainly not approaching any one of those controversial issues that we live today - whether it's the economy, or the question of the Gulf or Iraq."

Bishara said Ahmadinejad was "trying his best to present an Islamic discourse ... to say that if [the West] is not going to respect, legally speaking, different questions that concerns the international community, he is going to lean back on such things as religious discourse."

Economic worries

But the global financial turmoil dominated the assembly with Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, urging world leaders to put aside their national interests  and show "global leadership" to alleviate world poverty.

Ban Ki-moon focused on global
economic problems [AFP]
He said the economic problems could have a "very serious negative impact" on the capacity of rich nations to help others achieve their targets - primarily to reduce extreme poverty by 50 per cent.

"We face a global financial crisis. A global energy crisis. A global food crisis. Trade talks have collapsed, yet again," Ban said as he opened the assembly.

"We must think about how the world economic system should evolve to more fully reflect the changing realities of our time."

The secretary-general said that the world also faced a "development emergency".

"We must galvanise global awareness and global action, with a special focus on Africa."

He criticised the intenational community in assiting with Africa's development, saying it had "not matched words with deeds".

Ban also urged stronger action to combat the crisis in Somalia and highlighted the problems for the UN to meet deployment deadlines in Darfur, Sudan.

"If ever there were a call to collective action - a call for global leadership - it is now."

'Urgent timeframe'

President Bush also spoke to the assembly on Tuesday, saying that he realised that other nations were watching the US to see how they deal with the economic crisis.

He said that he was confident that the US would act "in the urgent timeframe required" to prevent broader problems.

Talking about the $700bn bail-out package proposed by his administration to fortify the US economy, Bush said: "I can assure you that my administration and our congress are working together to quickly pass legislation approving this strategy."

Al Jazeera's Sarah Brown in New York, said meetings at the assembly would also address the Middle East conflict and the Iranian nuclear crisis, among other topics.

Brown said that with the recent conflict in Georgia and the situation in Iran would mean that the atmosphere at the assembly would be tense.

Other speakers on Monday's session included Nikolas Sarkozy, the French president,  and who urged greater regulation of financial markets.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, urged for reform of the UN to give it greater power to deal with global economic and security crises.

Amazing this Iranian "punk-rocker"
At first I thought he's just a big-mouth but now look at him how right he was, all the time! But Bush-jr remains the best Mudjahedin: he managed to cripple USA worse than any Taliban would ever dream they could :-)

Bush is the worst U.S. President ever. He is an embarrassment to our people. His war claims back in '01 started the nuclear argument.

Marwan bishara comments speaks volumes of his anti Iranian bias...it is a general assembly meeting it is not a specific iranian conference...how much more detail do you want...generally your artical and its headline is unbalanced...when will Aljazeerah become independent and not a bad arabised version of the BBC

Go and live there!
All the Muslims writing here from the US, Canada, UK, Holland etc - why do you panish yourselves by living in such a hated West? Why don't you go to the amazing, democtatic, open states of Iran, Syria or Yemen? It is a pity that stupid governments of the Western countries don't assist You in doing it by kicking you out of their countries! Why you prefer to use health, education, social security, law&order etc systems of the West instead of kind, loving, peaceful islamic shariya systems?

Finally!! someone has the courage to face the biggest lies of the mightiest, and to convey the truths (whether if it comes to Financial downturn of U.S economy or criticizing the unconditional support of this country to Isreal, no matter how brutal they would be to the unarmed/innocent human beings) to the other world leadres!! I also think that Iran has every right to develop civil neuclear technology for the peaceful purposes and it should avoid devloping and pursuing nuclear bomb.

This poor man needs serious help
We all live to see this self acclaimed prophet's pronouncement. America's empire is no where near its end. The LORD is in control over America. This is God's own country of refuge to rescue the entire universe. Be honest, among which country does help goes to the rest of the world most? I say God Himself will take care of America. GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND GOD BLESS ISRAEL.

Ahmadinejad: US Empire Nearing End
Ahmadinejad is wrong. The US now has the oppurtunity to change course. The last 50 years have seen CIA directed policies which the world now faces. The USA is resilent and would soon kick that hold off its back and the world would see a dramatic rise in the USA's Economy, position and moral authority. Even Iran would be begging to have the USA as friends not because it needs anything but because association with the new policies would create greater stability in Iran and similar countries.

Ahmadinejad: US empire nearing end
Let those in glass houses throw the first stone. Name me 1 country who at times has not been a cancer to its own people or neighbors. I for one will relish the thought of us being more of a spectator than participant in other countries problems or conflicts.I also relish the thought of US money staying home helping our own. George Washington on his exit speech to congress warned of interfering with other countries problems, that's over 200 years ago and still holds true today. No more hand outs.

I am an American & stand behind Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his statement that summarizes the U.S. & its allies as opposing other nations' progress and monopolizing technologies. How can the U.S. have the time to develop certain ideas and weapons but then deny that ability to other nations competing with their developing technologies? Congratulations to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his continuing leadership of a democratic country where he was popularly elected. The U.S. hasn't even accomplished that...

Economy
At an end not so, as are economy slumps other contries will fall even further. Our arm might be extended beyond our boarders people were never to ashamed to except our help for disasters nor war. Something needs to work to balance this all out, we the people will pay the brunt of it just as we always do but this is what we get for alowing and not questioning people that are in control of our lives. People need to be held accountable after this mess is all balanced out.

UN Speaches
Ahmadinejad simply said what many believe. I don't support the Iranian regime and neither do I support the US and UK regimes but it is undeniable that his words are shared by billions around the world. The speaches really void of any content were the speaches held by Western leaders and Ban Ki-moon himself.

UN: Colonialist tool
The United Nations is a insidious colonialist tool used by the powerfull nations to bully the weaker countries into submission. Its a good thing that President Ahmadinejad points out the double standards being played out at the UN. With belligerent states like Israel and the USA operating in the middle east Iran has and should reserve the right to have a Nuclear weapons programe. I am of Sunni origin and I support President Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejads speech
Ahmadinejad's speech was very interesting and specific,as he made a point of condemning the US invasion and ongoing occupation of Iraq. An illegal act. Isn't that specific enough? I agree with most of the facts he mentioned, but I cannot see how the "Zionist regime" is going to collapse as he predicted. I can fully understand Iran's stance concerning the nuclear dispute with the "bullying powers". Despite the pressure being put on her, I hope Iran will not yield her rights to anybody.

In regards to the comment that the American empire is collapsing, he is referring 1st to the global economic situation which is affecting the USA more than any other. At the same time its a threat to the USA that if they strick Iran militarily, that this will be the final downfall of America because Ahamdinejad believes he is following the true prophecy and in that there will be victory.

Bush and Americas role
After 8 years of Clinton's uselessness, especially in dealing with islamic terrorism expansion in Asia and Europe, somebody had to start doing the job. 9/11 is a result of clinton's period-due to low oil prices and high-tech bubble all the problems were postponed. But as Roosevelt said: To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected". Somebody had to deal with Taliban, with Saddam's rule etc. What is Iran's contribution to the world? Did the send aid to anybody?US does.

ahmadinejad is true
i would call ahmadinijad a great philosopher for his statement. i i agree with him 100 percent. america should stop restricting other countries from acquring technology. every country has its boundary america should control america not any other part of the world.whoever says that iran should not enrich uraniam for nuclear weapon should first think of destroying all that is owned by the other countries. why are having it? they should gert rid of it if they think it is useless to have it.

to point with fingers beside the point
In this Issue of UN-talkshow, they only pointed with fingers beside the Topic from Ban Ki-Moon. The speach of George and Mamoud both were only about national interests, even when they tried to talk about their problems. i dont like both. Did anyone saw mamoud on Aljazeera? i chanced to see that live, and in my humble opinion he was talking for half an hour about what he could have said in 2 minutes. he mentioned allah as often - i would ask him why he had not invited allah to the conference too.

I hate to tell everyone but the banks/ mortgage co. are to blame for most of this mess. Why do we lend money to people who have 3 or more social security numbers, really bad credit and other issues? We need to get rid of the credit scoring and go back to the old way of doing business. Be reasonable in what someone can afford. Why would anyone loan someone $300,000 when they only make $50,000 a year? Get real, if you think this doesn't happens. The USA will fold within if we aren't careful

The USA is the strongest nation in the world today and for small insignificant countries to act brave, they shout at the biggest lion in pride. Iran acts brave in the open so that other countries will not see how truly weak they are. All bark but no bite.

Ahmadinejad: US empire nearing end
I am a "working class" American who lives far from Wall Street and Hollywood. For those who wish to see how the rest of the world thinks of us and want to educate themselves instead of being "spoon fed" by our own media, we are fortunate to be able to read Aljazeera and other publications via the internet. Ahmadinejad was in his right to make his comments about the US "Empire" nearing its end. Many of our own citizens say the country is going down hill.

Ahmadinejad
Ahmadinejad, what a poor little delusional man and he is a little man both mentally and physically. the US and the world for that matter are no doubt under financial strain, but this is neither the first and won't be the last time. sub prime meltdowns will be talked about in 5 years time just as we talk about the tech wrecks, dot com booms of years past. big business rules america and Ahmadinejad wishes he had some of it instead of the rhetoric to wich he seems to have and endless supply.

Natural evolution
I disagree. What is collapsing is the order imposed to the world by the Zionists after WW II, Iran is only showing the path to many other nations of the Jewish branded third world. Ahmadinejad has the merit to be the first leader to call a spade a spade, all the rest think the same but they are to afraid to say it so loud and clear: the king is naked !

Norberto

China shows the same
To be fair, China is showing the same with her magnificent achievement in space. while the Zionists sabotaged all attempts of third world nations to develop space technology, China is showing the path to the rest of the world, namely that we, the world, do not need to pay commission to the Jews for every enterprise attempted. China patently shows to the world that without the Jews THINGS GO MUCH BETTERCoca-Cola ... makes good things taste better.
