Ron Paul's 'counter-convention'

Paul and his campaign are calling for an end to US military operations abroad

Call it the real Republican convention.

At least that is how Ron Paul, a US congressman for Texas, and his supporters billed their campaign's Tuesday night "rally for the republic", in which they called on the party to "return to its roots".

From the looks of it, Paul, who suspended his campaign for the Republican nomination in June, could almost be accepting the party's presidential nomination himself.

Almost 15,000 people came from all over the country to hear him speak.

Paul, who spoke at the gathering on Tuesday night, was joined by an ensemble of right-leaning politicians, thinkers, artists and media personalities, from US television host Tucker Carlson to Jesse Ventura, the former Minnesota governor.

Their problem? Ventura, a former pro wrestler put it quite simply: "Both parties are destroying our country."

Promoting freedom

Lew Rockwell, a one-time staff member for Paul, was even more blunt. "If the only alternative to the socialism of the Democrats is the fascism of the Republicans then we are in serious trouble," he said.

The solution? Paul and company believe the only way to save the party and the country is by promoting "freedom" at all costs. They want the US to stay out of people's lives at home and stay out of overseas military entanglements, such as in Iraq.

Paul, 72, a 10-term Republican congressman, was the last of John McCain's Republican opponents to drop out of the race, outlasting better known candidates such as Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney.

Paul created headlines last year when his supporters raised more than $10m during two separate 24-hour periods, mainly via the internet.

'Limited government'

In focus

In-depth coverage of the US election

Unlike his opponents, both Republican and Democrat, Paul in his convention speech made few promises of what he would actually accomplish in office.

Alluding to his belief in a limited government, Paul said: "I wanted to be president because of the things I didn't want to do."

While Paul pulled out of the campaign, his so-called "revolution" supporters continued to remain energised.

When he officially ended his presidential run, his campaign was debt free and had $5m in the bank. With a surplus of cash and supporters, he decided to launch the Campaign for Liberty advocacy group.

Its mission, the group says, is to defend the "great American principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets and a non-interventionist foreign policy".

Paul's "Rally for the Republic" this week served as the campaign's official kick-off.

"This is a continuation of something that was started this past year and which we are following up with because of the amount of enthusiasm out there for the message," Paul said.

"Over the years there has been a gradual erosion and a misunderstanding of what a free society is all about, particularly among the Republicans.

"But freedom is inseparable and across the board. And the goal is to influence the philosophy of the Republican party and restore the republic."

'Party outsider'

Paul says he was blocked from the
Republican convention [GALLO/GETTY]
During the presidential campaign Paul was often excluded from forums and debates and even mocked by fellow Republican candidates. According to Paul this disrespectful treatment continues.

"If you don't bow and pay homage to the nominee, then you're not a Republican," he said.

Paul said he was barred from much of the Republican National Convention.

"I can come to the floor but I have to use a special door, I can't bring my staff, I must be chaperoned by an RNC staffer at all times and I am required to leave my credentials with the RNC," he said.

While the RNC denied that Paul has been singled out for special treatment Jesse Benton, a Campaign for Liberty spokesmen, confirmed that Paul's floor privileges were limited.

"The RNC spokesmen must not be speaking with the RNC operatives, because this is going on. So there is a miscommunication on their end," he said.

'True maverick'

Paul's fans are among the most committed in the US [GALLO/GETTY]

Paul's speech was the event of the day and he did not disappoint the throngs who came just for him.

He ran through a litany of offences and problems plaguing American society and its government.

When Paul explained to the cheering crowd "the fruits of your labour belong to you and not to the government", he might as well have been reading from John Locke's Second Treatise on Government, but his supporters were whipped into a frenzy by the end of the sentence and Paul was forced to pause.

Paul reserved much of his harshest criticism for George Bush on homeland security.

"Naming a bill the 'Patriot Act' and voting for it doesn't make you a patriot," he said.

"There is never any reason to give up one ounce of freedom for the sake of security."

And while John McCain has voiced support for an attack on Iran, Paul argues that Americans need to seriously consider the morality of pre-emptive war as US policy.

"Iran spends one per cent as much money on their defence as the US does and we're supposed to be intimidated and scared of them? They don't even refine their own gasoline!"

'Hero's welcome'

"His message is extremely important and he's had the integrity to stick to it for years - I want the world to know that Americans do believe in freedom and peace"

Bob Larkin, Ron Paul fan

Fans such as Bob Larkin drove all the way from Connecticut to Minnesota with his daughter to hear Paul speak.

"His message is extremely important and he's had the integrity to stick to it for years," he said.

"I want the world to know that Americans do believe in freedom and peace."

In fact, most Paul supporters echoed the same theme: Paul's honesty and integrity as a major reason for their support.

Drew Ivers, the Iowa state chairman for Paul's campaign committee, is a long time Republican. He is among many conservatives who see the Republican party as having "lost its understanding of conservatism".

"It's called limited government and we mean it," Ivers said.

Paul supporters were so excited to come to Minneapolis that many organised bus groups and "Ronvoys" to help share the costs of making it to the convention.

Eric, Craig and Charles - all Texans who gave only their first names -  hired two vans, which were brightly decorated with limited government slogans, for a 20-hour drive.

"Paul's openness and honesty about the problems facing our country are huge selling points," said Eric.

All three voiced the same idea about why Paul's message is so important.

"Not in our name!" they said in unison.

Ron Paul counter-convention
as a young black male, Ron Paul is for real. We don't want war with anyone. We have a lot of problems here at home to go and create more overseas! Obama will not offer "CHANGE" and people know it. McCain only promises more war. I wish more people knew about Ron because he has more support than many would expect.

Thank you Al Jazeera for being one of few major media outlets with some guts and audacity to tell things the closest to the truth as you possibly can. You put other networks, especially those based in "the West", to shame. Ron Paul is right, freedom brings people together. His fight, through his digging for truth, being honest as well as transparent, and that of Al Jazeera, are one. Sicnerely,

Ron Pauls Counter Convention
Thank you for this excellent article. Isn't it ironic that the US media can't get it right, but a news organization that is often demonized by the US media does such an outstanding job in their reporting? Seems the US media doesn't get anything right!

Thanks for your article, EVERY human being deserves liberty & freedom as a God givin right. The USA is being destroyed by the neocons & zionist that want to dominate the world. The American people need to take back our country as we drift closer to a dictatorship & we need to stop forcing other countries to do as we say & not as we do. Dr. Paul is a rare breed of person like our founding fathers. I hope PEACE to ALL countries of our world.

The only way...
Ron Paul speaks the truth, and Al Jazeera is apparently one of the very few networks with the integrity to print it. Obama and McCain are one and the same: aggressive with Iran and other Islamic states, big-government, big-spending, interventionist, expansionist, inflationist...the list goes on. Until we have sensible policies at home and abroad, we will continue to have problems. This will be a bad election for the Republicans because they failed to heed the cries of the Ron Paul crowd.

Sad that to get fair and balanced reporting you have to leave the United States. Up until last year I thought this was a new problem but after educating myself I find its been going on in the US for more than 100 years, it is just a little more blatant today. Shame on us for falling for it. Go Ron Paul ! Go Campaign for Liberty ! Wake up America! Freedom !

Ron Paultards
Actually, very few Americans would support Ron Paul's dilusional views of libertarian anarchy. Paul's "every man for himself" view of govenment is directly opposed to most Americans views of what government should be. The Paultards are very active and energized, but they are a tiny minority of Americans. Paul's followers mostly just don't want to pay their fair share, but they're right there when the welfare checks are handed out.

Ron Paul has a lot of support in the US and worldwide. People of all ages and ethnic groups donated their time and money to his campaign. The fact that he was ridiculed and marginalized only served to spread his message of freedom. Dr. Paul's campaign woke up a lot of slumbering Americans.

Just when I was thinking that the majority of Americans don't want the truth, they want commercials, along comes the voice of reason in Ron Paul, and he's a Republican. There is hope for America after all, although I suspect he'll be branded as an elitist because he's not fat.

Ron Paul Revolution
I had all but given up on my country until I learned that Ron Paul intended to run for President. I met him in 1988 during his first campaign for the Presidency and have followed his career ever since. I disagree with him on abortion, but his other ideas are almost perfectly aligned with mine. Some detractors have criticized his economic proposals, but having studied Austrian economics for 40 years I think that those who disagree need to do some homework.

Great article!
I want to thank you! This is the best, most unbiased article I have ever read concerning Dr. Paul. I don't know if you support him or not, that isn't the point - you didn't taint the article, you presented the truth! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We need more journalism like this. I am sick and tired of the main stream media here in the United States blackballing him and painting him as a nefarious radical, fringe lunatic - as well as all his supporters. His message resonates with many!

Ron Paul Revolution
I am so excited to see this on Al Jazeera! This is an impressive article on an even more impressive man. The Republican party once housed Lincoln, and now it is the home of war-mongering neo-con-artists whose interest lie solely in corporations. Ron Paul is our only hope to restore the Republican party. I was so disappointed that he and Kucinich failed to earn the nominations of their parties. What a wonderful election tha would have been!

I have been following the US presidential elections closely on major news networks and this is the first time that I even came to know this 'convention' existed. There was not a sliver of mention on the other sites. Kudos to Al-Jazeera for reporting this. Obviously this wont get RP elected, but it restores my faith in humanity to know there are a few people and organizations who have still some character.

Ron Paul
Paul is the only candidate who spoke about restoring our Constitutional rights, liberties, and insistence that ALL (even within the executive branch) obey the Rule of Law. He's the only one who considers it Patriotic to stand up for one's ideals/principles, and discuss, debate, or challenge what is wrong, immoral, illegal within government or society. A free mind, press and willingness to respect opinions is vital to democracy.

Good article. Aljazeera dare's touching on what corporate media ignores... good for you. There two essential point the article didn't cover as they worth: The source of the US's and the world's disasters THE FEDERAL RESERVE the creator of the most dangerous fiat money ever made. Second, Ron Paul said: "this campaign is "bigger" than the Republican Party." and It is. What this group of people is doing will affect not only the US but the whole world. We will live and see.

Ron Pauls View
It is interesting to note that almost all of Ron Paul's views are aligned with those of the majority of Americans. Poll after poll has shown that most Americans want less invested in the military, less taxes, no war/interventions, less government and more freedom and civil liberties. The fact that he (along with his message) is totally excluded from the political arena and the American media speaks volumes of the status of American democracy.

Ron Pauls counter-convention
With the disgusting actions of the US government in Iraq and everywhere else, the world needs to know that a great deal of America wants peace, wants trade, wants to leave the rest of the world alone. The American government treats Americans just as badly as it does Iraqis. America has millions of political prisoners in its jails. The tax-funded military "security" around the two other conventions is normal. Please don't hate Americans, we fear our government too.

It is such a pity citizens do not step up and accept the challenge and responsibility of their citizenship and liberties! It is hard to find anyone, politician or not, with honesty and integrity so complete such as Ron Paul. I only wish that there were more like him vying for the white house. I love Ron Paul But,
I think after the last 16 years we need a New Deal Democrat to kick start the economy, and settle the issues with the infrastructure in the U.S. Once the US regains strength, reputation, and infrastructure Ron is what the US is about and should have never strayed from! (Yes the U.S. NEEDS to worry about international perception) Ron's approach will do little to heal wounds created with the world at the moment. My view in 500 characters or less

Why dont Americans know Ron Paul?
This is a scary thought. It's the Pravda all over again. What kind of propaganda is the media selling us (or not reporting to us?!) Ron Paul is right: We don't hear about the REAL options. One party is just a little more WRONG than the other party. Americans have got to more searching into the TRUTH and stop believing the media because the media, big business, and the government are all in bed together. Let's make the most of the internet! And let the grass roots movement continue.

How ironic that the only place I feel comfortable finding unbiased, true, honest journalism, providing me information about a man who seeks to restore the fundamental principles of a democratic society in the USA is outside the mainstream of American media. Its time to Abolish The Federal Reserve
We don't need a new deal to "kick start the economy." We need to abolish the Federal Reserve and restore free markets. The Great Depression lasted 17 years. Compare that to the depression that happened when Martin Van Buren was president, 4 years. The difference was Van Buren didn't interfere with the economy, so it fixed itself. More central planning will only make our economy worse, but thats probably what we will get. The Greater Depression is coming, and all will see how right Ron Paul was.

The only good thing about him is he wants to stop attacking countries at will. That is a step in the right direction. But he is even more dangerous on the domestic scene than Bush and his cronies. His "freedom" means all the freedom corporations could dream of, and the dark ages for everybody else. Your regular American can forget about social security, worker rights, equal pay, decent minimum wage and health care. His foreign policy rhetoric is nice, but that's all there is to him.
