Palin hits out at 'elite' critics

Palin spoke glowingly about her family and her running mate [AFP]

Sarah Palin, the US Republican party's nominee for vice-president has attacked her critics, calling them a "Washington elite" out of touch with everyday life in the country.

Palin lashed out at Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, as she made history on Wednesday by becoming the first woman to be nominated for the post by the Republican party.

Speaking at the Republican convention in St Paul, Minnesota, Palin portrayed herself as a Washington outsider.

The governor of Alaska told delegates: "I've learnt quickly these past few days that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.

"But here's a little news flash for those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I'm going to Washington to serve the good people of this country."

Since John McCain, the Republican party's presidential candidate, made the virtually unknown Palin his choice for running mate last week, she has been at the centre of allegations surrounding her unmarried teenage daughter's pregnancy, her role in the sacking of an Alaskan official and questions about her political record.

Palin's anti-abortion and pro-gun background has also provoked controversy.

'Attack dog'

Palin, 44, said her service as a mayor and a town council member in Wasilla, Alaska, had given her a realistic perspective.

In focus

In-depth coverage of the US election

"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.

She contrasted that with Obama's background as a community organiser in Chicago and a first-term senator from Illinois.

"Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves," she said.

"I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organiser', except that you have actual responsibilities."

"Sarah Palin came out as an attack dog - the heart and soul of her speech was a visceral assault on Barack Obama," John Nichols, a political writer for the Nation magazine, told Al Jazeera.

"And far from going to the issue stances and all the things we might have done, she said look, 'I'm here to take Barack Obama apart.'"

Feminist controversy

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera's senior political commentator, said: "She sounded like a cheerleader ... she's taken women back decades.

"There was no vision and nothing specific about the reforms she would enact in Washington."

Larrey Anderson, a former state senator and conservative commentator, hailed it as a political breakthrough, saying: "I think women are trying to break through the glass ceiling [and] I think their chance is right here."

"[Palin] is the antithesis of someone who actually is advancing the cause of women, in fact, her goal is to take women's choices in life away from them"

Gloria Feldt, author and women's activist

"Feminism means being a player, means being part of humanity. And I think tonight, she showed real humanity."

Analysts had speculated that Palin's nomination was, to some degree, meant to gather support from Hillary Clinton supporters disenchanted by the vicious race she lost against Obama for the Democratic nomination.

Gloria Feldt, an author and women's activist, said that after Palin's convention speech, Clinton supporters would "in the end, end up supporting Obama".

Speaking to Al Jazeera on the floor of the convention, she said: "Sarah Palin's agenda ... did nothing to advance the cause of women whatsover, she's the antithesis of someone who actually is advancing the cause of women, in fact, her goal is to take women's choices in life away from them," Feldt said, referring to Palin's anti-abortion stance.

Criticisms 'divisive'

Other convention speakers, including a series of candidates who lost to McCain in the Republican nominating battle, also took aim at Obama and rallied around Palin on Wednesday, saying she had more executive experience than he did.

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, told the convention: "The choice in this election comes down to substance over style. John McCain has been tested, Barack Obama has not."

Obama's campaign responded to the Republican jabs on Wednesday, calling Palin's speech the work of "George Bush's speech writer".

Bill Burton, Obama's spokesman, said: "[It] sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years."

After Palin's speech, Republican delegates at the convention formally approved McCain as the party's nominee.

McCain is to accept his party's nomination for president on Thursday.

sad person
Palin is a sad vindictive and spiteful person, who wants to ban books. If she doesn't get her way she tries to get rid of people. And, would like to force her religious views on the whole USA. Probably the rest of the world, if she could. Palin is a small (closed) minded person from a small town. She gives small town people (population size) a bad name.

its all bait
Palin's speech last night was bait to the media. She wants her name in the media as much and as long as possible. Expect more of the same meatless attacks, and waving her children in the medias face to grab headlines. No one but the extreme right is taking her seriously! That was a Mad TV skit, or Steven Cobert satire right?

DOESN"T MATTER
No matter who gets in office, their first commitment should be in the US. Quit sending money abroad and fix your own problems. For what is spent over 4 years in other countries could do it. WAKE UP GOVERNMENT !!

more irony
It is more than a little ironic for Palin to be talking about the "elite" in Washington being "out of touch" when her running mate, John McCain has 10 (yes, that's right) homes for his personal use. Of course she whips up folks at the Republican convention but being whipped up is all they have. Neither their past records nor future prospects are bright.

Hmm
I have a feeling that maybe the Republican party don't want to lead the U.S. for another four years. Just looks like they are setting up a Democrat win. They have an aging candidate who was originally not even backed by much of the party and an inexperienced woman as VP (remeber we are dealing with conservatives here)...something not quite right with their choice of candidates.

Like Giuliani said:
"The choice in this election comes down to style over substance. That's why they chose a woman that had no plans of running for Vice president, and has yet to disclose an actual political agenda.

I just hope the American public exercise sanity and compassion. Something I feel the Republican party is quite unable to do.

more of the same
Palin is a joke. She's just another hate monger - she understands nothing about diplomacy, economics, international relations or compassion. She will be as detrimental to freedom as John McCain. We're in for four more years of pseudo-freedom double-talk meant to make us feel free while we rot in our chains. Whether it's Obama or McCain as president, nothing will change. I'll try not to say, "I told you so."

Which century is this?
What in the world is going on? Since when does being a MAYOR of a small town in white America give one the experience to guide one of the most powerful nations in a complex world, complete with Nuclear capabilities? Do Americans realize that when John McCain gets cancer for the fifth time and dies, this happily ignorant cheerleader will take over, demolishing R v. Wade and decades of feminism? Does anyone else catch the irony here? Not all Americans are this idiotic, i hope the world realizes.

Gov. Sarah Palin
Gov. Palin struck me as a street hustler with some education. Her speech seemed to have substance because up to then there had only been dull unimaginative speeches. When the euphoria finally comes down Mrs Palin will be seen as the aggressive vindictive and intolerant person that she is.

proud
I was born to an American mother and a German father. I was raised in Venezuela where I lived for 21 years. I know how other people view the US of A, and I can tell you, I have never felt prouder to be an American because of John McCain, and especially because of Sarah Palin. They are what the US of A needs during these tough times. God Bless America, and the rest of the world.

In other parts of the world people try to elect the most intelligent and brilliant individuals to be their president. Unfortunately in America the more dummy you are the better it is. Four more years with MC them we will have to immigrate to China for a better leaving and I do no see Americans speaking Chinese. Good luck with your new sweetheart. Miami

PALIN HITS OUT
Palin, the Christian Evangalist, was chosen to tout Bush's failed agenda and gain the residual feminin vote of Mrs Clinton. How tragic it is that Christian Evangalists allied with Zionism are heading for a collision course in the Middle East and the "Israel" of the Caucausus, Georgia, if elected. With a speech largely based on attacking her opponent she has displayed extreme naievity from within. The world is tired of these warmongers and neo-cons. Lets pray for their good riddance!

Excellent Speech
I think she did an excellent speech. Attack her as you wish, but I think she did a wonderful job in putting some light on who is Obama. His Hollywood like celebrity status is due to his eloquence and the frustration people feel on Bush, not by any great visions the man has. (i.e he has 300 foreign advisors! Give me a break- have you tried doing any meaningful decisions with 10+ peoples input!?). I think her confidence and real world experience makes her a wonderful candidate, better than Biden.
