US troops 'should stay in Iraq'

Bush is expected to make a decision on troop cuts early next week [GALLO/GETTY]

Senior military advisers have recommended that the US president maintain current troop levels in Iraq until the end of the year, Pentagon sources say.

The recommendation that George Bush withdraw one combat brigade, or up to 5,000 soldiers, from Iraq only early next year was contrary to expectations that improved security in Iraq would allow for quicker cuts.

The plan is aimed at taking advantage of security gains in Iraq to bolster the military effort in Afghanistan, where fighting is intensifying.

Military leaders acknowledged that the plan was a compromise on the push by General David Petraeus, the US's senior commander in Iraq, to retain current force levels until mid-2009.

General Petraeus has agreed to the cut from 15 to 14 combat brigades, but not until February.

The US currently has about 146,000 troops in Iraq, including 15 combat brigades and thousands of support forces.

Afghan war

US military officials are increasingly worried about escalating conflict in Afghanistan.

An unnamed senior official said it was critical to start replacing the marines in Afghanistan soon.

"We believe the risk in Afghanistan is such that we need to do something, and the risk in Iraq is such that we can go into Afghanistan without risking unduly the posture in Iraq," the official said.

Bush, whose term ends in January, is expected to announce his next move before Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, and Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testify before congress about Iraq and Afghanistan on Wednesday.

"The president is now considering his options," Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman, said on Thursday.

Pentagon leaders have struggled to balance the two war fronts, repeatedly stressing that Iraq is the priority while calling the Afghanistan effort an economy-of-force operation.

On several occasions Mullen has said "in Afghanistan, we do what we can; in Iraq, we do what we must".

But decisions on any large-scale withdrawal from Iraq is expected to fall to Bush's successor.

The Democratic and Republican presidential nominees, Barack Obama and John McCain, have said that more troops are needed in Afghanistan.

The Iraq war is deeply unpopular with Americans although it has somewhat faded as an election issue with the decline in violence and increasing economic troubles at home.

Suicidal soldiers

Meanwhile, army officials on Thursday revealed that the suicide rate among US soldiers could surpass last year's record, and urged military leaders to increase prevention efforts.

There were 62 confirmed suicides among active duty soldiers and army reserves called to active duty this year, while another 31 deaths that appear to be suicides were being investigated.

There were 115 suicides last year.

Colonel Eddie Stephens, deputy director of human resources policy at the Pentagon, said this year's rate per 100,000, if all deaths are confirmed as suicides, would exceed that of civilian suicides.

"Installations and units across the army have been directed to redouble their efforts in awareness and prevention training and soldier care and support services."

Pete Geren, the army secretary, said in a statement over the weekend that "army leaders are fully aware that repeated deployments have led to increased distress and anxiety for both soldiers and their families".

"The army is committed to ensuring that all soldiers and their families receive the behavioural health care they need."

US troops should stay in Iraq
As a U.S. citizen, I have to say once again, I am disappointed that we can't just do as we're told and get the hell out of Iraq. I am embarrassed by the U.S. and certain they do not have their citizens best interests at heart. It's difficult to see straight when your eyes and mind are clouded by greed. I wish there was something I could do as a citizen to assure that we leave Iraq now. The one thing I plan to do is vote for Barack Obama and hopefully that will end our occupation in Iraq.

Not Only Iraq, but "EVERYWHERE"
..and very soon, anywhere for that matter. America's stance of "intervening" everywhere and anywhere shall surely be tested to its very core. Feel sorry for the next President. Clearly, they shall have to change their superpower mentality. Even though they created "superman" comics, they should realise that there is no more "Lone Super Nation" thus learn to discuss issues not to just resort to war. If not, thn prepare for Russia, Venezuela, North Korea as well. Marines ought to go there as well

Get out of Iraq
I wish nothing more than a safe return for all of the American troops. As well as the troops of Australia and the UK. I do not support this war. there is nothing but greed behind the facade of capturing the terrorists and finding WMDs. More money for the higher-ups. More suffering and death for the soldiers and their families. Frankly, I'm not sure who the bad guys are anymore.

Censorship
This site is censored in the U.S. I have been censored. A neatly folded flag is a poor substitute for an American 19 or 20 year old child.Even making a hero of them is no help. Why are we in Iraq? Why Afghanistan. Why Viet Nam? Its BIG MONEY and POWER. It transcends both Republicans and Democrats.Where is the war resolution? NOT ONE! Where is the Constitution? What Constitution?

Stay in Iraq longer.
I am not surprised the US wants to stay in Iraq unwelcomed. There is oil, there's target practice, there's money to be made by the contractors, there are more people to murder,Iran's influence is not accepted,Muqtada al Sadr is still around, the blood thirst is not over yet.Black water and other groups are top dogs in Iraq, theyr'e not ready to leave, there is money to be made. The US of thugs and murderers are just not satisfied. They might still find WMDs.

I'm amazed to see such a pro-war article. It sounds like it was released by the US military, rather than written by Aljazeera.

US Out!
I'm sure if the Iraqi people were ever consulted on this matter the vast majority would want the US out immediately. I cannot believe such barbaric colonialism can still take place in the 21st Century. Humanity is truly lost.

Actually most Iraqi people still want the US soldier in Iraq. Its the government that wants us out since we decided to stop paying for all of their recontstruction. We can go to Afghanistan, plenty of targets to shoot there also Ayub.

I agree with mike, but this dislike for Americans creates even more of a need for us to act. We're the only ones who can. If it wasn't for the rest of the world complaining about us while pointing out our flaws, not as many of us would be trying to change our country. I wish everyone on the planet was speaking poorly of America. We can't say we haven't benefited from corruption. We have. We deserve criticism. It's not your fault until you understand what is happening and decide to do nothing.

not deserved
For one and all, I've been to Iraq (now for the third time) from the invasion through some reconstruction to my time now, between my last tour in Afghanistan and this tour, I had four months at home. Talking to the average citizen, the US is not much hated in Iraq and only slightly more so in Afghanistan. The media potrays things as worse because it gets ratings. I'm not here for colonialism, nor is the US. Why would we deal so many hits to our economy for other countries? We are doing good.

Recent mass suicide of US Troops.
After reading the news report on presstv.ir this a.m. about 21 US troops AT ONE AIRBORNE DIVISION in Iraq attempting mass suicide(16 dead 5 survived), I have NO DOUBT AT ALL that US troops MUST leave and Iraq should be formally handed over, resources AND ALL,back to the Iraqi people. I have ALWAYS been against Bush's illegal occupation and the loss of so many innocent lives on all sides. Ask the surviving troops of latest mass suicide attempt if THEY FEEL US troops should stay in Iraq? Mel.

Ignorance
Interesting. The ignorance in the world today, and in the US in particular is amazing. Perhaps if the Islamic fools had not attacked the US, the world would not be so upset with our response. Attack us and a price will be paid. We destroyed Iraq, we destroyed the Taliban, and Al Quida is about defeated. We don't care what you think or say. Attack us and you will suffer. Don't start something without considering the ending.
