Iraq seeks answers on US spy claims
The new book claims the Bush administration spied on al-Maliki [GALLO/GETTY]

Iraq is to seek an explanation from American officials over a report asserting the US spied on Iraqi officials, including Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister.

The claim comes in a new book by Bob Woodward, a US journalist, the Washington Post newspaper reported on Friday.

"If it is true ... it reflects that there is no trust," Ali al-Dabbagh, an Iraqi government spokesman, said in a statement.

He also said that Iraq would ask the US for an explanation.

Dana Perino, the White House spokeswoman, declined to comment on the claims made in The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008, Woodward's fourth book on the administration of George Bush, the US president.

'Good relationship'

"We have extensive co-operation with Prime Minister Maliki. Our ambassador sees him almost daily," Perino said.

"To the extent that they [the Iraqi government] have any concerns, because we have the good relationship that we have with them ... I'm sure that they'll be talking about it."

Woodward's book asserts that the surveillance of the Iraqi prime minister caused concern among several senior US officials, who questioned whether it was worth the risk given Bush's efforts to earn al-Maliki's trust, the Washington Post reported.

The book also questions whether the US troop build up ordered by Bush in 2007 and known as the "surge", was not the primary reason for a drop in violence in Iraq.

Instead Woodward says it was only a factor alongside others such as the emergence of the Sunni Awakening forces and the decision by Muqtada al-Sadr, the Iraqi Shia leader, to rein in his al-Mahdi Army.

Stephen Hadley, Bush's national security adviser,
issued a sharply worded statement countering a number of claims made in the book but his statement said nothing about Woodward's assertion that the Bush administration spied extensively on Iraq.

Iraq seeks answers on US spy claims
Why is he so worried if he has been doing everything according to the law? Is he afraid that the US will find the millions if not billions that he stashed in a swiss account? Or is it he is afraid that his fellow countrymen will find out that he has hidden agendas and doesnt really care about his counrty, but himself?

This is all a fake show for the world to think that the American installed Iraqi Government has power of their own and can stand up for themselves. Everything that goes on with these puppet governments is a lie, they are only doing what they are told to do to confuse people around the world. If they even dare to ask for an explanation from the US they will be thrown out by the US in a second or assassinated.

Nouri Al Maliki must be the most naive and gullible Iraqi by seeking an explanation from American officials on such claims! Nouri Al Maliki doesnt know how the occupier controls you! They will give hints on what to do and to make sure you are doing it, they need to be reassured that you are taking the necessary steps towards achieving the US administration goals and its agenda from EXPLORING OIL to checking the relationship between this government and IRAN! Even Nouri's bedroom must be bugged

spying
Why should anyone be surprised that Bush is spying on people in Iraq when he spies on his own citizens. He spies on American politician why wouldn't he spy on Iraqi politicians. Not shocking reporting.

us spy claims
How refreshing to see so many well informed people who really know what is going on behind the scenes. It's all about OIL and the puppets are only doing what "BIG OIL" tells them. This applies to both the U.S. and NATO and not just the Iraqi goverment.

Iraq seeks answers on US spy claims
If Mr. al-Maliki or his staff really were surprised to hear that the Americans were spying on them, then they are either very naïve to extent of idiocy or putting up a show for the world. Americans spy on everyone including their closest allies. That is what makes them so strong not just weaponry.

Iraq seeks answers?
This is simply ridiculous. Iraq is currently 'owned' by USA. Are we saying they are spying on themselves? Lets stop feeding idiotic ideas.

Iraq seeks answers on US spy claims
Everyone spies on everyone, this is not something novel or original. Those who criticize Bush for such actions or imply that he is personally responsible for the spying ("Bush is spying...") are simply ignorant. Any government who takes itself seriously spies... any security agency (CIA) will spy irregardless of the administration (Bush). Do you mean to say you don't think there was syping during the Clinton administration? It is quite ridiculous to suggest this is either new or negative.
