How can America react? |
|
|
|
|
|
What Americans should have done after the torture became public is not reelect Mr. Bush as our president. He should be impeached on charges of disobeying international law. Yes he is a hypocrite but what can I do? Mr. Shafiq says that Americans should get a taste of torture. To me that seems like it would just continue to condone the act. People like me who cant yet change the world and whose fault it is not(i am under 18 and cant vote) would be tortured. Enough inocents have been already. |

At least it's in the open and voiced against. But I can name a dozen muslim countries easily where torture is rampant, the rule of law is nowhere and claim they protect their citizens and this less covered by al jazeera.

To the world audience, especially the Muslim nations, I encourage you to take heart. Hopefully, a new administration coming. With the new administraion many Americans wish that a new standard would be set for the US. Let us all pray that we will all enjoy a world of peace, where the dignity of every being is held in highest esteem. |

Many more Americans than the MSM cares to admit are shocked and sickened by the actions of the Bush administration. We have worked to bring this issue to light by sharing these stories and other progressive efforts to reveal the truth.
Our efforts are often suppressed. Let's try not to judge an entire people based on the unacceptable actions of our leaders- actions that took place without our knowledge or consent. Many here are working to educate others. Not all of us are ignorant rednecks. |

It's been proven that info gained through torture is rarely true. There is no proof that torture has prevented any terrorist attacks. To condone torture by lies is to support the "real" terrorists and to do this is no better.

What is truly sad is that there is an assumption that since this scandal has come out, torture has stopped. I fear that to this day military officials in Iraq and Afghanistan are still conducting it. Only more carefully concealed than before. |

Since its war of independence the U.S. has seen itself as the champion of human rights, yet its record tells another story. Whether it's slavery, Manifest Destiny or the like, America has often behaved badly but as a super power it does a super job of sanitizing its actions and glorifying its role in the world. |

The interrogation techniques used by the US have prevented further terrorist attacks.
It has been shown that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed did provide information that resulted in the prevention of further attacks.

I agree the US is full of hypocrisies and is guilty of many many things (especially under the current administration). However, reading Shafiq's above post made me cringe. To "hope one day they get a taste of their own medicine?!" To wish this upon anyone is terrible. You have to remember the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "An eye for an eye leaves the world blind." Shafiq, I don't wish anything bad upon you or your's you're just be a hypocrite when saying this and you're criticizing yourself. |

Isn't a shame for entire usa citizens that their forces torture the prisoners like waterboarding authorised by whitehouse. I think its high time, Bush, Cheny Tennet, Rumsfield and blair were tried in the hauge for crime against humanity. So far they have found no WMD and their evil desires are open secret in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan. The preachers of human rights stampede these rights whenever they have half a chance. International laws are for other nations and not for USA or Uk. |

I want to go on record that great numbers of the people of the United States are outraged by the conduct of the Bush Administration. I have been appalled by their reckless disregard of the American constitution and by their inhumane and disgraceful treatment of whomever they chose to call enemies. I, too, believe Bush and Cheney should be prosecuted as war criminals and I am disgusted that half the American people voted for these two. |

Kalid Sheik Mohammed's interrogation was a failure, it has never resulted in any actionable intelligence, because he gave it under tortured. Luckily, not every american is ignorant like you. If that were the case, then the proposal of the first poster, Shafiq, would make sense: americans like you indeed deserve a taste of that medicine. |

Why everyone is shocked to find out that the US is using torture to extract infos from prisoners. Looke how they treated the American Indians, the Blacks, the minorities and more recently of course Palestine and Iraq. In the name of freedom they destrroyed a beautiful rich country called Iraq . they armed to the teeth an Out-Law state that kills with impunity Palestinians and Arabs and very well protected and financed by the US. In the name of freedom, they destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan. |

Democracy is a terrible form of government, but it is better than all the others. We have never had a more corrupt leadership, but we hope we will do better this time. I may be an infidel, but I can tell you that vengeance is the most malignant lie that afflicts mankind. We have no choice but to find a way to share this planet peacefully, or reap a harvest of misery beyond the comprehension of any one of us. In spite of George Bush, we Americans are not your enemies. |

I agree with lots of American who say that Muslims should not blame the entire nation. Maybe they should not. You're. I think then, that the best way to let Muslims think otherwise is to practice this method on Mr. W. Bush hemself just to provoke the truth out of him and tell the world himself about his war crimes. And of course also those who support him in it. |

There is the divine rule that guides every action on earth. Every period has its own Pharaoh and God is always there to treat him as He did with Pharaoh of Musa. The time is very near, some may not believe it, but history is there to testify. Let the true Americans not support him in the least so that they may be saved when the true recompence comes. Humanly, Bush and his family must be tried and purnished by America herself to prove that they have not supported him in crimes. |

We've been the biggest hypocrites during the past 8 years. We preach and want to spread democracy, but have subverted it via comprehensive measures at home and in our policies abroad: domestic surveillance (illegal wiretapping), torture, Rendition, illegal detention, voter-rights suppression, ex-post-facto laws guaranteeing retroactive immunity for law-breakers, and more. I can't blame the CIA for wanting an official document, given Bush's lack of transparency, and aversion to accountability. |

I think the issue here, more importantly, is that the Bush Administration lied by saying we don't torture when all the long they approved it. We know that other countries torture, they don't pretend to be something they are not. Obviously, our government knew the people of the USA would not approve of this, so they lied...once again. Too many innocent people were tortured and help captive. Accountability please. |

Torture has NEVER been illegal in the US or in most other countries as well. I a glad that we do what is necesssary to protect the citizens of this country. In fact, that's what government is supposed to do: protect the people. If you don't like it, don't be a terrorist. The lack of willpower to do what is necessary for the survival of your family is the true decline of civilization, not the intestinal fortitude to follow through with it. |

torture is an obscene act whenever it occurs, and destroys the humanity of those who perpetrate it. however, vengeance is no less obscene. to elevate vengeance and make of it a sacrament, is to pronounce a death sentence on the very survival of a humane civilization on this planet, and condemn successive generations to a long dark age of fascism, genocide and misery. judgment is the sole province of our God, by whatever name we call Him. Our sole authority over our fellow men is forgiveness. |

I think to say that the US are the worst offenders in terms of human rights is unfair because you just have to look at Mugabe's Zimbabwe to see that there are others countries that are worse. The issue here is hypocrisy. How can they champion themselves as a beacon of hope and criticise others for human rights violations when they endorse torture and other such methods. It doesn't make sense to someone like me. |

Americans? Seriously, do you listen to yourselves? Now i dont agree with torture on any standards but let me get this straight... waterboarding is done to make the person think they are drowning? However, they dont drown? They dont come close? Hm. Each of you all should go research what countries do what "tortures" and see if waterboarding even comes close in that catagory. I hope no one you know ever has to experience real torture. its not a "faked" drowning, its much worse |

many Americans, like me, oppose the Bush Administration. We oppose the Patriot Act, the War on Terror and yes... torture. Unfortunate for us, we are a nation of 300 million of different ideals. The lowest common denominator of 300 mil often tends to take authority as absolute truth, rather than questioning their leaders. They denounce pacifism as "un-patriotic" and "cowardice". On behalf of the American people who choose dissent over mindlessness,
please forgive us world. Impeach Bush/Cheney. |
