Keith Ellison, right, says US Muslims have
to engage in the political process [Amanda Sealy: CTVC]

In a special two-part film Rageh Omaar travelled across the US exploring the roots and influence of Islam in America.

Abdi says he would sacrifice his life for the country he calls home.

The taxi driver taking me to the airport in Minneapolis is not referring to his birthplace, Somalia, but to the US – the place where he has lived for the last 13 years.

Abdi is part of a 44,000-strong Somali community in the liberal mid-western state of Minnesota, most of who are Muslim.

My own adopted home, England, has an even larger Somali community, which has been settled for longer, but they do not tend to think of England as home.

But in Minnesota, Somalis – no less scarred or traumatised by their experiences - seem to have planted roots deeper and faster than any Somali community I have seen in the world.

They do not talk of returning home, they are home.

The Somali community's sense of belonging in Minnesota runs contrary to the image many people may have of an irreconcilable conflict between America and Islam.

Electoral milestone

Estimates put the number of Muslims in the US as high as eight million, and the faith is thought to be the fastest growing religion in the country.

Minnesota's population is largely Christian and Jewish, so it may seem an odd destination to begin a journey looking at the origins of Islam in the US.

But in 2007 the state elected America's first Muslim congressman - Keith Ellison.

He admits that being a Muslim in the US can be a "bumpy" experience, but says that people should not use that as an excuse to disengage from society.

"You have to get involved. You have to run the risks that you're going to encounter bumps along the way," he says.

The Somali community in Minnesota has certainly engaged. After meeting Keith, I went to a party for recent Somali university graduates - part of the latest wave of immigration to the US.

One young man celebrating his achievements tells me that while he and his friends have not forgotten their identity they are determined to give something back to their new community.

The Somali community in Minnesota represents the modern face of Islam in America. But the roots and history of the religion in the US stretch back further than most people realise.

I travelled to the town of Jackson in Mississippi, America's Deep South. I had my own preconceptions about this being a place of segregation and prejudice.

However Islam's roots in the US begin here. Many slaves shipped from Africa to work on the grand plantations of the south were Muslims.

Slave origins

Largely forbidden from practicing their faith they found different ways, such as singing, to express their religion.

Okolo Rashid founded the International Museum of Muslim Cultures in Jackson - the first in the US. Her research suggests that the number of Muslim slaves was much greater than previously thought.

"One third of all the enslaved Africans that were brought to the Americas actually were Muslims," she tells me.

Artemis Gaye describes his story as "roots in reverse" [Amanda Sealy: CTVC]
After slavery was abolished, millions of African Americans abandoned the south and headed north to seek their fortunes in the factories and stockyards of the big cities.

Their other choice was to sail for Liberia, the country established for freed slaves by the US.

The early settlers of Liberia encountered little but disease and hardship. And modern Liberia has suffered a succession of devastating civil wars, causing those who had the means to do so to leave.

In Chicago, I met one such Liberian, who has turned the story of slavery and emancipation on its head. He is Artemis Gaye, the great, great, great, great grandson of Prince Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, an African Muslim prince and scholar who was enslaved in Mississippi for over 40 years.

Prince Ibrahim was one of the first settlers of the new Liberia, and his story is portrayed in the International Museum of Muslim Cultures I had visited in Jackson.

Artemis told me that discovering his ancestry through research in Chicago's libraries was like winning the lottery. He describes his story as "roots in reverse".

"This country has to understand that its roots – especially when it comes to African Americans – are Islamic roots," he says.

Chicago's cultural diversity and relative harmony, including a large Muslim community, is surprising given its divided past and history of race riots and black separatism.

Today, the city is home to the largest number of African American Muslims in the US and Islam has a role to play in combating the endemic gang violence.

I met convicted murderer Rafi Peterson, who converted to Islam while in jail and now runs Chicago's only half-way house for Muslim ex-prisoners.

'Matter of survival'

The house is a calm oasis in a neighbourhood destroyed by drugs, guns and violence.

Rafi does not condemn the gang members out of hand. "It's a matter of survival" he says. "They gotta do what they gotta do to survive. My thing is that if you wanna turn people away, you gotta turn 'em towards something."

"Americans I think are subject to fear just like any people in the world"

Keith Ellison, US congressman

And he feels that Islam is the "something" that can offer gang members an alternative.

Towards the end of my trip I visit the capital, Washington DC. It might come as a huge surprise to many people but America's founding fathers knew and respected the basic principles of Islam.

Thomas Jefferson, for example, had his own copy of the Quran. And monuments in Washington acknowledge Islam's contribution to world civilisation.

One of Jefferson's crowning achievements was establishing freedom of speech and freedom of religion and that is what many Muslims in the US I spoke to were thankful for.

In the course of my trip, the message I heard from Muslims was largely about opportunity and rights, about having a stake in this country and being made to feel that they belong.

In Washington I met up again with Congressman Keith Ellison who was sworn in to office using Thomas Jefferson's Quran.

I asked him whether, despite Muslims' confidence in themselves as US citizens, most Americans across the country are still afraid of Islam.

"Americans I think are subject to fear just like any people in the world," he replied.

"But I think there is a deeply rooted tolerance. We've been through a momentous civil rights movement, we've been through all kinds of social change movements, all marching the country toward a greater level of equality and I think people are just not ready to try and cut anybody out of the deal."

Rageh Omaar's search for the roots of Islam in America can be seen from Sunday, October 19, at the following times GMT: Sunday 0000 and 14000, Monday 1000 and 1900, Tuesday 0600

The article immediately quotes someone who equates citizenship with dying for his country. Suicide bombers aren't much different from U.S. Marines, so the mindset does fit into the American philosophical swamp. But all religion is regressive. To finally progress toward civilization, humanity needs to outgrow all religion. Glen Roberts, nottalkradio.com

Fear and tolerance
Once again AJ is always good for a belly laugh. What a Muslim claims usually has very little relation to the truth. Americans do not have fear like other people. We are really quite fearless having never met an enemy we could not vanquish when needed. I suspect what you feel as fear of Islam is actually disgust and contempt. I do agree that Americans have a deep rooted tolerance. But 9/11 and additional Muslim atrocities have pushed that tolerance. Islam is no longer welcome here.

What a despicable story, Muslims who identify themselves as citizens as the biggest oppressor of Muslims in these days, Americans. They have truly adapted the slave mentality and thus trying their utmost to please their masters, just as the dog who licks the feet of his master when being thrown a bone. I am glad to see that Al Jazeera's article on Islam in America doesn't just shamelessly bash america as anti-Islam. This will probably come as a surprise to many Muslims around the world. Surely, this article is the better side of al Jazeera. Thank you for not portraying us to world muslims as muslim hating thugs.

Great article and very informative of our history here is the USA...Now I know why the name Abram is found in Mississippi in the mid 1800's. The United States citizens, for the most part, are uneducated. Despite our attempt to provide free education for our citizens most of them can neither read, write, or name and locate 5 different countries on our planet. Again a Great article and hopefully in 50 years Islam will be the dominate religion of the United States.

I don't see a problem with any muslim practicing his or her religion in the US just so long as Islam doesn't try to trump the United States Constitution, which is the law of the land for ALL people, regardless of race, color, or creed.

Guys civilizations have many pillars to become successful. Religion CAN be one of them but in all ur articles and whatever the subject u bring out Islam...If u r Taxi driver, boothe salesman teacher politician even if u r voting u always inject Islam in the picture.Chill out nobody is taking Islam from u and u r a reflection of ur religion...Observe ur religion and respect others and u will acheive more than provoking and instigating repulsion etc...

I would like to agree with Mister Cordry on the matter. I appreciate the article because it gives a fresh, inspiring view on the history of immigrants in this country. A moment of realization
It's really amazing that people are unable to restrain themselves regardless of the topic. As muslim, Somali, and US citizen, the issue of religion is beyond politics and recism in my view. Living in the US for the past 9 years with little to increase in the society I went to high school, university and now proud muslim who practices his religion with freedom and understanding of others regardless of religion. A true example of what we need in this country is to hear what Gen. Colin Powell said

Who are oppressed? Fatima, you need to visit the US and taste the oppression we are experiencing. As a former immigrant, now a US citizen and veteran of the wars in Middle East, I feel so much freedom in this country that I am willing to die for it. The US is the home of the free with a constitution that guarrantees freedom of religion to worship the God of my ancestors.

Religion
Religion is a tool to control the masses. God does not exist, and if he did he would not be the oppressive God called YHVH or Allah. Religion is only an identity that people can use to hide behind the truth. It is also an identity that makes you different on irreconcilable grounds. We can safely say that fertility gods and pagan religions were conjured by societies to explain the unexplained and keep order. The semantic religions do the same.

I am not a scholar and so this is not a legal position (fatwa), but the Qur'an is clear about some things. Never be the aggressors. But protect yourself. If someone drives you from your house, you (and no future children) have the write to reclaim it. Thats about it. And the maximum punishment for adultery in the Qur'an is not death. In Texas, it is still legal to kill your wife. Must be caught in the act and killed with 6 or less shots. (I live in LA, my bro, TX) Looks bad, huh? (Law Not Used)

In your country there is no blood relation. You know what is blood relation think of it. In your country sex is open, women can go to bed with any body if she is married or not married you don’t know who is your birth mother & birth father, who is your sister or brother. Even your wife is not trustworthy she can have relationship with any body. First understand Islam, what Islam teach us then only blame, if you don’t know, unnecessary don’t open your mouth before opening your mouth think 1000 time for blaming Islam.

You also left out Islam still advocates stoning of women seen in the company of men whom are not of their "tribe" without a male escort from their "tribe". Thats is where Islam clashes with the modern world. Muslims have been consistently trying to push Sharia Law into what was secular areas, and that is what makes them a danger. Accept secular rule of law, and then Islam can find a welcome place in the world.

Double Standard
Onyeka from Nigeria Excellent point. Foreign nationals that immigrate to the US are mostly accepted and allowed to practice their faith and culture. In most of the countries they come from Christianity and Americans are not welcome and often threatened. Classic double standard. I’ve heard repeatedly Islam is the religion of tolerance and peace. That’s only true if you follow Islamic Law as interpreted by Muslims scholars. Islam may be the path for some but it’s not the only way.

This illustrated the history of emigrant Muslims in USA. It also illustrate the rise of Muslim American nationalism. Prophet did not like the concept of nationalism rather he used brotherhood of Muslim all over the world. West is eager to see the rise of nationalism in the heart of Muslim community and countries so that they can bring about new moderate Muslims who do not follow the commandment of Quran and sunnah rather follow the western values. Folks, The claim about 1/3 of the Black Africans sold into slavery in the US has been proven false over and over. It is similar to the claim that most Black slaves were happy and loved their masters before our civil war between 1861-1865. Most of the Black African slaves who came to the America's were in fact taken by Muslim tribes and sold to the coastal tribes. Jack E. Hammond

it is a good thing to see Muslims in the USA thriving in their businesses, jobs, education and most importantly, practising their religion unhindered. Having read the many comments, I can understand the shocked faces of some Muslims living in the middle east for Muslims who made America their home, and proudly said so. Yet, it is also true that Muslims are made welcome in the US, and more and more people there are accepting Islam. Besides, the real US citizens I've met are mostly very nice and tolerant. This is a great article reveal aspects of the American mentality. But regretably some of the responses seem to indicate that people missed the point. Americans on the whole do not hold religion against someone. For others to hold that we are the "Great Satan" or oppressive to our own people only reveals that there is a misunderstanding between two peoples. Islam is not the only solution for America. We could not abide by forcing people to be spiritually saved, that is a personal choice.

In spite of stoning women mentioned many times, so far none has been recorded in written history of islamic countries. But stoning him, yes, if accused by her! Women in Islam are empowered like anywhere in the world and get away with many things men don't. In the US feminist dictatorship, criminal women freely ruin lives of millions of men, take their homes and kids, turn men in bonded labourers or jail, kill kids - without fear of stone or hell. Religion
Actually, the article is factually wrong. By far the fastest growing religion in the US are atheists agnostics which is what I proudly am. To any religious person out there I just ask that you go buy a biography on Charles Darwin and let your mind be free. http://www.teachingaboutreligion.org/Demographics/map_demographics.htm

The American crescent
I am increasingly drawn to a Catholic-compatible way of life that is not limited to tiny enclaves of fanatical sectarians who don't care about the injustice on which their own fragile wellbeing is based and who are oblivious to the suffering caused by their warmongering. I'm opposed to the "prosperity gospel" which Jesus never preached and which is actually a heresy. If I were the Pope, I would refuse to meet the president of the USA. Bush is the greatest war criminal of recent history.

Raiwand
Mr. Raiwand you shouldnt call us muslims in North America a slave, because you are the slaves of Americans. They run the entire Saudi Army, they use your land to invade your own muslim brother(iraq). they use your oil to fight against your muslim brothers. yet your dumb leaders sje a blind eye and do nothing about it. so you guys are slave of America in your own land at least we are better cause we are in their country.

Islam in America
There are many Muslims in America. And you will never hear a stink about Muslim women wearing a headscarf here as you do in Europe.

"One third of all the enslaved Africans that were brought to the Americas actually were Muslims,". What, do you own a time machine, lady? I have a feeling I know which hole Okolo Rashid pulled that statistic out of....

History
History will judge the US. We are the greatest society that has ever been. It is because we have no Royale family and you can have what ever religon you what and the gov. will protect your civil rights. But that is all soon to end. We are going to the dogs as of nov. god have mercy on us.

The American crescent
Islam is just another religion of today's world. As for other religions, Islam has its own rules and wisdoms. Hence, let's just try to avoid these clashes of comments. Misunderstandings and misconceptions can be discussed thoroughly but in the right places (e.g. dialog of civilizations workshops, seminars..). US is wonderful because of its institutional set-up in terms freedom of speech and religion its mixture of races, religions, etc advancements in technology, business beside human rights.

The American crescent
Personally, though living in a country (Saudi Arabia) that outsiders consider rigid, so many non-muslims are working here and I enjoy their friendship. Many others including Americans fellows wish to have a chance to come here for work. I think it's just a mind-set issue. Let's try to be open-minded please.

God (Allah) is Love, Peace and Justice
Americans have been God-loving people. Gradually they have bought the marketing of Evolution Theory and God is Dead Nihilsm, Man is allpowerful ethics, Beggar thy neighbour foreign policy, Steal from the Poor economics, Impoverish through Interest Monetary Loan policy...all this while Usury (consumption of interest) is forbidden in their Gospel. Beliefs of Christians and Muslims have commonalities. Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) prostrated in prayer like Muslims still do today.
