'Troopergate' inquiry clears Palin

A second corruption investigation has cleared Sarah Palin, the US Republican vice-presidential candidate and governor of Alaska, of breaching state ethics laws.

The Alaska Personnel Board - a three-member panel under Palin's authority - found on Monday that she had not violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act when she fired Walter Monegan, her public safety commissioner.

Monegan had refused to dismiss Palin's former brother-in law, a state trooper embroiled in a child custody battle with her sister.

The report said: "There is no probable cause to believe that the governor, or any other state official, violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act in connection with these matters."

The board's findings run contrary to a legislative inquiry conducted in October that found Palin had abused her position by pressuring subordinates to fire the trooper.

Palin brought the matter to the board herself after complaining the legislative investigation was led by rival Democrats and biased.

'Misconceptions'

Timothy Petumenos, independent legal adviser to the board, said the original inquiry had not interpreted the ethics legislation properly.

"The Ethics Act is primarily directed at personal financial benefit ... people have a lot of misconceptions about the scope of the Alaska Ethics Act," he said.

Petumenos also said Palin and other officials had denied allegations made by Monegan which, he claimed, formed the basis of much of the legislative report.

Thomas Van Flein, a lawyer acting for Palin and her husband Todd, said: "Mr Petumenos determined that the Branchflower report's findings that Govenor Palin abused her power had no legal basis and that Governor Palin did not violate the Ethics Act."

Scary movie
dear Sirs, i know we got our own home made problems here in Thailand, but they're never that world moving like the elections in USA. This duo McCain / Palin could be the best laugh since Laurel and Hardy if they wouldn't have the power to destroy the world. Scary, scary

Troopergate inquiry clears Palin
On the day that Americans go to the polls and Sarah Palin edges a little closer to potentially becoming the US Vice President, it is surely not unreasonable to ask what an alleged abuse of power of this kind would look like if it were magnified to level of that prestigious office and even beyond, to that of President, should the necessity arise – must politics and corruption always be two sides of the same coin?

Palins improper conduct
Just because a judicial inquiry has cleared Palin of a breach of the Alaska Ethics Act, which as reported is primarily concerned with personal financial benefit, doesn't mean she hasn't acted improperly. Palin is an emotive and vindictive person of poor judgement and weak principles.
