Ohio Republicans wary of Obama

Republicans are preparing for four years of Democratic rule [GALLO/GETTY]

Galion, Ohio, is a conservative small town, surrounded by corn-fields and woods.

It has an old-fashioned Main Street, a handsome library, a Veteran's Memorial paid for by the community, and several churches.

In the three days I spent trawling around it over this election period, I never saw a black face.

On the neatly trimmed lawns, the McCain-Palin signs outnumbered the Obama-Biden signs by a ratio of about 10 to one.

And yes, Galion voted reliably Republican on Tuesday.

This is the heartland of  America, and it values God and Country. So this is where I returned, in the aftermath of Barack Obama's victory, to see what people were making of it all.

John Swain, a local Republican volunteer, was taking down the last campaign posters at party headquarters.  John, now retired, was Galion's chief of police, and has always voted Republican.

"I'm not prejudiced, I always thought Colin Powell would have been a logical choice. I have no problem with an African-American being president," John said.

But he is anxious about the future. His main concern is that President Obama will raise taxes, and that "everything will become more expensive".

I asked whether he believed Barack Obama loved America in the same way that he did. John hesitated for some time. "I hope so", he said. "I hope he does."

Rush was spewing anger and indignation, and yet you also sensed he may have secretly enjoyed Obama's victory.

A "radical" is in the White House, and Rush is going to have plenty to talk about in the months and years to come.

Mendy Sellman has listened to a lot of Rush Limbaugh over the years.

If there is such a thing as a conservative base, then she is definitely part of it.

A devout Baptist, Mendy's family has worked the same farm just outside Galion for the past seven generations.

When I first met Mendy, a couple of days before the election, she told me that George Bush had done a good job by keeping her safe in the seven years since  the attacks of September 11, 2001. She voted for John McCain.

So, does she now trust Barack Obama to keep America safe? Mendy sounded doubtful.

"Part of me wants to, part of me questions whether he can really grasp the whole concept," she said.

Mendy is also concerned about Barack Obama's faith.

She says she does not believe the widely–circulated rumour that he is a Muslim, but she is still troubled by remarks made by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor.

An older America

Swain is concerned Obama's presidency will mean higher taxes
Standing outside her beautiful 19th century farm-house here in the middle of Ohio, with corn fields stretching away in all directions, it felt to me that Mendy represented an older America, one that is now being eclipsed by a new consensus being formed in distant and diverse cities.

"I don't think everything is perfect with the old America, I just think we have to be very careful, and consider the whole," she said.

"I'd like Barack Obama to come out here, and see our lives, and how wholesome they are."

Make no mistake, in parts of America there is fear and hatred, and there will be many who will find it difficult to ever accept an African-American president. In a country so vast and populous, it could not be otherwise.

But that is not what I found in Galion.

Instead, I met people who seemed disconcerted and worried about the election results.

But they were also manifestly trying to adjust to a new reality, balancing their instinctive respect for the office of the president, with their doubts about the new man.

And, for a short while at least, prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Actually you are safer when folks LIKE you.
Nice folks. But Bush didn't keep America safe. He made brand new enemies all over the world. America is despised now, even in Canada. Seems to me that that would make it more dangerous.

Obama será diferente?
His ancestral African mussumano prevail in its decisions? Or his ancestral asiático prevail? Only time is able to show who Obama is American. It is in us a desire that is quite different from the person who replaces him at home white.geane Menezes Brazil

John Swain will vote for Colin Powell not because he's not prejudiced but because Colin Powel is a republican. Colin Powel, Condoleeza Rice or Clarence Thomas will serve John Swain's interest. So don't be misled by his statements saying he's no problems with blacks.

Better a Muslim President than some fruitcake dispensationalist who regards Revelations as a script rather than a prophecy, surely? As has been pointed out, you are safer when people like you. The fact that Americans are only being attacked in countries that they have invaded should not be mistaken for safety. The USA cannot prevent asymmetric attacks by making itself a fortress it can only do it by not making enemies. Maybe it'll start taking that course now.

Isloated Galion
Pls realize these are decent folks who are isolated & ignorant (not stupid) & so they are fearful, as you would be. I live in Akron which is very diverse but Galion is totally white & rural, which is what the GOP has become having lost the center & indies like me. It will take folks like these awhile to realize they are no longer members of a national party.

Security with Bush?
I dare any Bush supporter to wear a 'I love George Bush' tee shirt in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, South America, or the Middle East. Go to any continent and wear that despised name. You will see first hand how much security his policy has made America. I voted for Obama because he is intellectually superior to his rival. He will make the right decisions.

There is but one(1) race on the planet,(human race) and the sooner all the people in America and the rest of the world realize that, then maybe just maybe there will be peace, harmonly, and happy souls everywhere. p.s. take a good look at this world of ours...hate,greed,debauchry,etc.Dosen't anyone think we should try a different approach. we are all doomed if we think life can continue this way!

I cannot help being surprised at how most Americans seem to be so very ignorant. They do not even realize just how much devastation the Bush doctrine has caused to the world and the level of hatred for America and Americans among the other citizens of this world. Most Americans are still day dreaming in a world of their own, while seemingly trying to act as the World's POLICEMAN. Wake up America and smell your own coffee !!!!

Are enimies were made at 911 when we lost about 3,000 people. I know you probably think we deserved it. I choose to fight. It is not easy being the leaders of the free world. You seem to forget that canada does not need a strong military because regardless of what happens, the US will protect you. Your welcome..

Ohios take on Obama
I am a 68 year old US citizen an Independent voter. I spent 25 years in the US Military. The basic problem we see now in Ohio now is the same one we saw during the Vietnam War years: A deep ignorance of world history. Just like Vietnam Americans have no clue about the last 200 years of history in Iran or the Middle East and cannot fathom the idea that the USG lies and puts Israel before the principles of peace and democracy. The USA is run by Washington lobbies the Israel lobby is the worst.

A new age in America
I have seen a number of my Republican friends come to realize that we have been poorly guided by Bush/Cheney policy. I think even George realizes it too. I can't imagine him feeling remorseful at his lack of success while watching never before seen levels of excitement for the next president. I encourage citizens around the world to believe as many us do that we are entering a new age in America. We are always going to have hate filled citizens such as G. Ullible. MOST in the US are very hopeful

Ohio Repubs dont hate blacks
Ohio Republicans don't hate blacks - they just don't want any of their tax money providing health care for black people. Also, they don't want any of their tax money providing for better public education for blacks in Ohio. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, they don't want any black farmers moving to Galion. Have you ever seen a black farmer in Ohio?

From a native Ohioan,
I grew up in a town just like Galion a small, 100% white farm town in Ohio. While there are indeed those who hate Obama and any other African-American they see, most people are just ignorant and mean no harm. The only black Americans they know are the ones they see on TV in rap videos, playing professional sports, and committing crimes on the evening news. Education is the only permanent solution. We must teach future generations about diversity and tolerance, and erase these false fears.

To G. Ullible
I spent five years working in the USA and I have been in this area of Ohio. While Mr Obama may not be everything that the people of Galion want, he does not hate them and his first move as President-Elect was to reach out to people like those in Galion. Your comments show your own fear and hatred. I hope that somehow you gain the strength to overcome your fear If you do not like Mr. Obama, show the strength of your arguments with facts and truth, not fear and lies.

ohio republicans wary of Obama
I can't help but feel all the hatred that G.Ullible has pent up in them. I don't know what happened to them to have all this resentment, but I hope they can work it out? Personally I feel safer all ready. McCain was more of the same as Bush. Help the rich and neglect the less fortunate and attack attack attack. I believe that once the people of Galion see the difference they, the good people of Galion, will re-elect President Obama

"Youre welcome"
Hey ringo..... Not that we're your biggest trading partner or anything..... You know, unimportant stuff like oil, water, electricity, etc., etc., as a matter of fact, we export much, much more to you folks than we import from you, so one could assume it's in your best inerest NOT to let Canada be taken over, or become too chummy with, say, Russia? By the way.... You're welcome.... lol

Americans ignorant?
Mohamed Adham frets at how Americans are ignorant and don't realize the damage Bush has done. Tell that to the 52% of us who voted for Obama and for CHANGE! We hope we can soon re-join the world community as a partner and not as a bully.

concepts
. what does this woman mean by "... part of me questions whether he can really grasp the whole concept". what concept?? This is an odd concern after 8 years of clueless kneejerk foreign policy. I'm amazed at people I've come across who parrot the "socialist" nonsense about a candidate who is actually cautious & conventional though with hopeful progressive leanings. I have a number of criticisms & concerns about Obama. But it's refreshing to have a leader who thinks and listens

Fear not
Galion and environs are not representative of all of Ohio. I live in NE Ohio in a county which also voted Republican, but not be that great a margin, and contiguous with areas which voted heavily Democratic. Many in Ohio are pleased with Pres-elect Obama's victory and look forward to better future for our country and for the world. There are many Ohioans who are delighted with Obama's election.

ohio reps wary of BO
i only wish american people who realised that war and bullying doesn't make them a great nation by overwhelmingly voting for the democrats-BO. under the new president, american will once again become a great nation and i pray to GOD that all the policies of bush admin are reversed successfully so that the 'anointed one' BO leads his nation and the world to peace, prosperity, etc.

It amazes me that Bush still has support within America when he is the most dislike leader in the western world. His international record has been a disaster. I see him as an idiot who is clearly manipulated by greedy zealots. It is refreshing to hear concillatory and unifying oratory from Obama. The world awaits to see how he can implement his visions.

Just for the record, we do have African Americans living in Galion. We are not a predjusticed down. I personally have some wonderful African American friends from around here and made several while serving in the military myself. We have a right to vote for whoever and race, age and gender have nothing to do with our choices. We vote on the values we believe in. How can people who don't even know us, judge us?

Be willing to bet that the woman who talked about Bush keeping us safe, still thinks that the Iraqis had WMD and were behind the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. If they get all their news from talk radio and don't read the news it is no wonder.
