US congress votes to back Israel
Israel and the US have a long history of close
ties [GALLO/GETTY]

The US House of Representatives has voted to endorse a resolution backing Israel in its offensive in Gaza, in which at least 780 Palestinians have been killed.

The body passed Friday's resolution "recognising Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza" by 390 votes to five.

The measure also noted that the humanitarian situation in Gaza "is becoming more acute" but did not rebuke Israel.

Keith Ellison, the only Muslim member of US congress, was among the 22 members of the House who voted "present", which means that they voted neither in favour or against the resolution.

"I cannot vote against this resolution because I believe every country in the world has the right to defend itself," the Minnesota congressman said in a statement.

"At the same time I cannot vote for this resolution because it barely mentions the human suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza."

Dennis Kucinich, a Democratic congressman for Ohio who voted against the bill said before the vote: "I'm hopeful that we do not support the inhumanity that has been repeatedly expressed by the Israeli army."

"We must take a new direction in the Middle East, and that new direction must be mindful of the inhumane conditions in Gaza".

US-Israel ties

Washington has been Israel's closest ally since 1948, when Harry Truman, the former president, made the US the first country to recognise Israel.

The US has been repeatedly criticised by Arabs for its unstinting support of Israeli actions. The US frequently blocks United Nations resolutions critical of Israel and on Thursday abstained from a Security Council vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The House has passed similar measures in recent years by massive majorities.

In 2006, the House voted to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah for "unprovoked and reprehensible armed attacks against Israel" and supported Israel's incursion into Lebanon.

In 2004, the body voted to support a statement by George Bush, the US president, that it was "unrealistic" to expect Israel to return completely to its pre-1967 borders.

The US senate had voted on Thursday to back its own resolution offering "unwavering commitment" to Israel.

That recognised "its right to act in self-defence to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism" and urged a ceasefire that would keep Palestinians from firing rockets at Israel.

Harry Reid, who leads the Democratic majority in the senate, said on Thursday following that vote: "Our resolution reflects the will of the state of Israel and the will of the American people."

Not all American people agree with US congress
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is incorrect in his assertion that this vote backing Israel "reflects the...will of the American people." There are some Americans who believe, like I do, that Israel's actions in Gaza are reprehensible. Israel should withdraw immediately, stop hindering humanitarian aid, and truly work for peace with the Palestinians by returning to their pre-1967 borders. I am a white American but I support my Arab brothers and sisters of the human race.

U.S. CONGRESS VOTE
Once again the arrogance of the Congress is shown in the words of Harry Reid:"Our resolution refects...the will of the American people." Throughout the history of my country, the members of Congress have used their misguided conception that they carry out "the will of the people". Once again, the members of Congress show their belief that politics trumps humanitarianism! The true will of the American people, not their leaders, has been one of compassion for those who suffer around the world.

TO CONGRESS: I DO NOT BACK ISRAEL
Once again US Congress bows to pressure from influential Israelis and AIPAC & ignores the requests of US citizens. Huge numbers of US citizens & citizens of the world deplore Israel's murderous, lawless attacks on Gaza and the years of suffering Israel has inflicted on the Palestinian people. ALL funding to Israel should stop now and be withheld until Israel is tried for war crimes, moves back to '67 boundaries, removes the apartheid wall, pays reparations & allows "right of return".

House vote
I wonder how many in Congress wanted to vote against the resolution to support Israel, but couldn't due to their fears of repercussions. Thank goodness that their are a few who are prepared to stand up for what is right...Kudos to Ron Paul, Denis Kucinich and the other 3 who took the stand for justice. As an American taxpayer living abroad, I am appalled that my tax dollars support weapons for Israel, who is using these to murder innocent children, women, aid workers, among others.

Appalling!
As a Jewish-American I am appalled by the actions of the Israeli regime against the people of Gaza. I have supported the PLO for more than thirty years, and believe that Hamas is a reactionary political and religious force that should be defeated in Palestine. But that defeat should come at the ballot box, and handed out by Palestinians -not by Israel with the approval of the USA. There is no excuse -none! -for the vicious, inhuman, and criminal war now being waged in Gaza.

I call upon all Muslims in the US to go to Washington DC for 1 million-men-women march, and upon OPEC to only charge the US with higher prices and Iran not to negotiate with US.

US Congress=bought by AIPAC
To the rest of the world.......those evil people don't represent all Americans. I am deeply ashamed....I cannot express in words the profound sadness and horror I feel. To those in Palestine.......do not despair...please...The world IS with you.

It doesnt surpise that i heard US congress backed isreal, becuase they already live on occupied land. If they want to do something for palestine, they would have done it before for the red indians. Nothing good is coming from a people from the parents who murdered civilian red indians. peace

US keeps ignoring the millions of voices all arround the world, and keeps supporting Israel, even in the war crimes. But nobody seems to notice that ignoring those millions of voices all arround the world, brings a massive amount of frustration and anger and feeling of injustice, not to mention hatred, pushes the people to the edges to rebel on whatever the current acclaimed "free world" stands for.

opening a can of worms
I am a former US citizen. It is things like this that made me give up my citizenship. This vote shows how non-informed the population of America is on this subject, and I fear that there ignorance will haunt them in years to come as revenge is taken on the Israelis and the Americans. Strike another blow for American NEWS media, another loss for the American people.

US congress support for Israel
What a shame! The vote is refleive of the soundness of the insightful declaration of the late Imam Khomeini more than 20 years ago that the U.S. (as an establishment) is the GREAT SATAN. With all fairness, who can dispute this fact? Reid's claim that the vote represents the view of the American people is an old tactic to justify unworthy and irresponsible voting in congress and has no basis. The fact is that most Americans refuse to take part in the elections reflecting their mistrust of system.

congress
I am an American and I agree completely with Harry Reid and the vast majority of the US congress. Hamas is a cancer on the Palestinian people which must be excised before there can be peace in the region.
