Obama offers Iran 'new beginning'
The US cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1979 when 52 US diplomats were held hostage for 444 days [AFP]

The US president has issued a videotaped appeal to Iran offering a "new beginning" in US-Iranian relations.

"My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties," Barack Obama said in a message distributed on Friday.

The White House distributed the videotape and posted it on its website to coincide with Iranian observance of the Nowruz festival, celebrating the arrival of spring.

Reacting positively to the offer, the press adviser to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, urged Obama to back his words with concrete action to repair what he called past mistakes.

"We welcome the wish of the president of the United States to put away past differences," Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the AFP news agency.

"But the way to do that is not by Iran forgetting the previous hostile and aggressive attitude of the United States.

"The American administration has to recognise its past mistakes and repair them as a way to put away the differences."

EU hopes

Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy chief, voiced hope that the video message could open a "new chapter in relations with Tehran."

"I hope very much that the Iranians will take good attention of what has been said by President Obama," he said.

The US is at odds with Iran over its nuclear programme, which Washington says is aimed at building atomic weapons, while Tehran insists it is for the peaceful generation of electricity.

The US is also concerned over Iran's missile-development efforts.

With Thursday's appeal, Obama went further than he has since taking office on January 20 in extending an olive branch to Tehran.

His administration earlier expressed an openness to face-to-face diplomatic contacts with Tehran.

It marks a major shift from the policy pursued by the administration of George Bush, Obama's predecessor, towards Iran, which he once branded as part of an "axis of evil".

The US cut off diplomatic ties with Iran during the 1979-1981 hostage crisis, in which a group of Iranian students held 52 US diplomats hostage at the American embassy for 444 days.

'Point of recognition'

Al Jazeera's Alireza Ronaghi in Tehran said: "Iranians have always said they have to wait and see what exactly the changes are [between Bush and Obama].

"Now they see for the first time in many years Iran being addressed as the Islamic Republic of Iran.  It is a point of recognition for Iran.

Obama's said US wants Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations [Reuters]
"An opportunity has been given to the current administration, [under] President Ahmadinejad, to solve outstanding issues that no other government in Iran has been able to address. He is not going to miss this opportunity."

In his video appeal, Obama said: "This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect."

He said the US wanted Iran to take its "rightful place in the community of nations", but also insisted that Tehran do its part to achieve reconciliation.

"You have that right - but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilisation," he said.

"The measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create."

Obama said "he is seeking "a future with renewed exchanges among our people and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce".

However, he acknowledged that "this won't be reached easily".

Nuclear progress

Iran's leaders did not mention Obama's speech in speeches given to mark the Nowruz celebrations on Friday.

But Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, said that tests at the Bushehr nuclear plant in the south of the country had convinced other nations that its nuclear plans would not be abandoned.

"This is the results of the progress of our scientists ... which persuaded the whole world that the path of Iran's nuclear progress could not be blocked," he said.

Great article!! Its nice to see a better administration in the White House, even though I don't agree with his Gaza stance, its nice to see the White House engaged in renewing diplomatic affiars. I mean comeon, Iran is a large nation with a large energy demand, just like other developed countries. They need energy (nuclear) too. I think the US should offer to help Iran develop its nuclear energy capabilities, bringing stability, friendship, and "building over destroying" as Obama puts it.

Obama offers Iran new biginning
My President offers Iran a new beginning in relations. That's wonderful news. God wants us to live together in peace. Very particular matters will still be addressed. We can never forget the accident in "Chernobyl". Nobody wants an accident that would result in those kinds of consequences. And no one would wish a kind of catastrophe that could be generated with these kinds of technologies, specifically nuclear war, even if it be war period. The transparencies of missle capabilities helps.

Peace
This is a good time for peace. We have a civilize president Obama who really wants peace and actually the whole world deserves it. Reagan, Bush Sr and Bush Jr disturbed the concept of peace around the world. They want to show that US is the most powerful country in the world. But in front of GOD, we are nothing. We can see the calamity today and they have the biggest problem. I wish Ahmedinnejad accept this offer and this is the best moment for him to talk about Israel. Best of luck.

Re: New Beginning
Let's face the truth. Iran will have to start to work with the world. Otherwise they will be destroyed by Isreal with America's help before they go nuclear. That's why Iran is trying to buddy up with Russia and Venezuela for their help. At least US is trying to extend an olive branch early

Good but not good enough
I like Mr. Obama & you don't than you realy don't know him but for this let me break it down for everyone to understand this once for good, # 1) lets by gones be by gones & try not to talk about the past. 2) If you love your self & just your country but not the whole Plante than please stop reading because I don't want you to wast your time, so what I'm trying to say that no govt has a right to tell the others what to do & what not to do, unless you'r respectful & practicing the same.....

Obamas speech
This is a very nice action and defines the very meaning of diplomacy. Some ignorant/pessimistic views may see this as a move to "allow Iran another chance to bow to their commands" but this attitude wont see progress. Views expressing pessimism without providing a better alternative or solution are best to be kept to oneself. If trust in American people is lost forever b/c of past actions than should it not be the same for every other country, b/c all countries have a dark past (incl. Iran)!

3) it's very disappointing to the Iranins that Mr. Obama didn't even said a word when the Israel did the Gaza assault that is very tipecal two face ploicy Mr. President & Israel is the reason that America is trying to stop Iran from the unclear technology, which's right that not only Iran but on one has right to say things like that they want to wipe out any other nation or a country but there should be a balance between govts that how far they can & should go, like Gaza assault was inhumane

Id like to add more
To the people of Iran: I'd like to add to Obama's words: We have wronged you. We supported the Shah and Saddam, put our troops in your holy lands to get your oil. You have every right to be bitter and not trust us. We will change. I ask that you work with us for solutions. Please help us against Bin Laden, and help us get peace between Israel and Palestine. It will be good for everyone. Thanks.

"New Beginning" with Iran
There is enough "hard feelings" between both countries and people so, if Iran wants to accept President Obama's offer to begin working toward a better relationship, they cannot keep insisting that we "right every wrong we have ever done" in the past. There are plenty of grievances on both sides. Both sides need to put them aside and begin to talk. We have made the first move and I am happy that we did. I hope that Iran will proceed and understand that they lose no face in accepting the offer

HE TOOK THE FIRST STEP
I'm proud President Obama took the first step in reaching out to Iran. I hope the Iran Supreme Leader will welcome this beginning of talks. I'm so proud the US now has a President who works for the people. We will have to face the 8 years of evil and corruption caused by the former President.

Littel language mistakes...
Very nice approach from Mr Obama. It is a wind of hope blowing in America, country in which a great part of taxes goes to a machine of destruction and punishing of others. They had to evolve, anyhow, and the talk of Mr Obama seems to show it. However, there is, in my opinion, a tremendous mistake on the way he addresses the people of Iran: he dares talking in their name! This can be understood, by intelligent people, as a kind of little insult. America has now to learn, not to teach.

Re:Obama offers Iran new beginning
All this means is that the West is giving Iran another chance to bow to their commands. If Iran does'nt then they will be labelled terrorists again.

obamas offers
if obama can stay his course and not be bullied by the neo-cons (dems & repubs) and the israelis/zionists, he may yet to become a great president. and play a role in bringing peace to different parts of the world. he can do that by america ceasing to meddle in other countries affairs and cease being stooges for the israelis/zionists. and admit to the role america has/is playing in the direct & indirect suffering and chaos in the Middle East. america must chose to stand on the side of RIGHT.

Iran new beginning
First, before president Obama even attempts talks with Iran, he needs to take responsibility for the Gaza massacre. He should never have let that happen and shows he does not want to be very diplomatic. If he wants to prove himself, he needs to call for everyone involved for the happening of that massacre to stand trial for war crimes. Only then will I care for anything that comes out of his mouth.

Iran has not done anything wrong. All their nuclear programs are perfectly legal Many other nations either have or are pursuing the same technology. So any problems, Mr. Obama, between the US and Iran have to do with the US over stepping its boundaries into another country's sovereignty.

Iran and its leaders.
The U.S. needs to learn not to teach? You mean defending itself is teaching. As long as Iran and some others consider the U.S. wrong because they don't let Islam become the basis of our laws, the American people will not support Iran. We don't judge people by their CHOICE of religion. We judge them by their actions and deeds.

Obama's stance toward Iran is the same as Bush's stance, arrogant and baseless. All the phrase "new beginning" means is that he's changing the look on his face. Instead of frowning and demanding, he smiles and demands. But he still demands with no real authority to demand and he still makes charges without evidence. Iran's response that it's the US that needs to change is reasonable. Glen Roberts, nottalkradio.com
