Pope meets sex abuse victims

Pope Benedict XVI has held a special private mass with victims of sexual abuse by catholic priests on the final day of his visit to Australia.

Before flying home on Monday, the leader of the catholic church spent about an hour with four victims of abuse at St Mary's Cathedral House in Sydney and heard accounts of their ordeals.

The meeting came two days after the pope issued an historic apology for what he described as the "evil" of sex abuse by clergy, saying he was "deeply sorry" and calling for those responsible to be punished.

In his apology Benedict said he wanted "to acknowledge the shame which we have all felt" and called for those responsible to be "brought to justice" over what he said was a "grave betrayal of trust".

But the apology was met with scepticism by victims and support groups who said the pope had not gone far enough, demanding that the church provide financial compensation and psychological help.

'Spritual proximity'

In a statement a Vatican official said the pope wanted Monday's meeting with two men and two women to demonstrate his concern over the issue.

"The pope listened to their stories and consoled them. He assured them of his spiritual proximity and proposed to continue to pray for them, for their families and for all victims," papal spokesman Father Frederico Lombardi told journalists.

Lombardi said the pope met with victims of abuse on his last day in Australia in order "not to interfere" with celebrations for World Youth Day that have drawn more than 220,000 young catholic pilgrims to Sydney.

No details were given of the conversations between the pope and the four abuse victims.

Benedict has made trying to repair damage caused by the scandal one of the themes of his papacy.

He held a similar meeting with clergy abuse victims in the United States during a visit to the country in April.

No truth in pope
many christian Priest (like ST. Xavier) are the main cause for Mass rape of women in Goa ..... It was horrible period. The only objective is to convert people form other religion to Christianity...... Hence stop this rubbish talks and try to stop the third world war( between MUSLIMS and CHRISTIANS). That could be archived by forgiveness and being calms and respecting other religion.

I'm annoyed about this comment from Arun Jhon that suggests that St Francis Zavier was responsible for mass rape in Goa. I am a Goan and Muslim convert. St Francis Zavier was responsible for helping plague victims and the poor. Despite no longer being Catholic I respect the good work this man did in his life. By the way Catholics and Muslims have lived in harmony for hundreds of years in Goa and both respect St. Francis Zavier.

After a long time Pope admitted their fault. But, There are also other sides. Like why the papal library are restricted? Why the documents in there are not published in the public? One more Question, "Did God create Adam and Eve, or Adam and Steve? "

Money solves everything?
I think its good that he has at least admitted their faults. Its worrying that teh ambulance chaser lawyers are already in there asking for money - as if money will really help. But I would have liked to hear "we are sorry and this is how we are going to make sure it doesn't happen again". Instead we have to "trust in god". How very catholic to ask forgiveness and then continue to do it - gives them something for confession I guess.

the pope dynesty
well we have seen such things from Christian priests and everyone know of it better, i myself am a muslim and i personally respect Christian religion, but it was such a shame specially for a religion representing "Essah"Jesus whom muslims consider as their prophet , but still Islam has been blamed for all the violations , i personally think that peace can only be achieved when Christians stop attacking Muslims, thats what Al Qaida is fighting about,,,,

re: the pope dynasty
'I personally think that peace can only be achieved when Christians stop attacking Muslims, thats what Al Qaida is fighting about'. I personally think that peace can only be achieved when Christians AND Muslims stop attacking each other. There is no excuse for Al Qaida's actions as there is none for the incidences of Priests abuse.
