Philippine separatists warn of war

The military has vowed to hunt down those responsible for Monday's attacks [AFP]

The Philippine separatist group Moro Islamic Liberation Front has warned the government against launching an all-out offensive in the country's south, saying it would be "the most serious blunder that this sitting regime could commit".

Filipinos will be caught again in the "never-ending vicious cycle of political and economic instability", the Muslim separatist group said in a statement on its website.

The warning comes a day after the Philippine military chief vowed to hunt down separatists who attacked two towns in the south, saying the time to give peace a chance was now over.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Abdullah Macapaar, an MILF field commander blamed for ordering attacks on the two coastal towns on Monday that left at least 34 mostly civilians dead, said his fighters were running out of patience with the government peace process.

"If the government declares an all-out war, we will also declare an all-out war in Mindanao," he said. "We are ready to kill and be killed. The patience of Muslims has run out."

The warning also comes amid fresh fighting on Wednesday between separatist fighters and the military that left one soldier wounded.

Major Armand Rico, a regional military spokesman, said about 30 MILF fighters attacked an army patrol base at Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao province, and the military responded with mortar and howitzer fire.

A lieutenant was wounded, he added.

Macapaar, also known as Bravo, said his group had "nothing to do with" Monday's deadly attacks in Lanao del Norte province.

The MILF leadership had distanced itself from the attacks on the towns and blamed renegade fighters led by Bravo frustrated at delays to finalising a peace agreement with the government.

Bounty offered

Bravo and Ameril Umbra Kato, who led the occupation of predominantly Christian villages in the south last week, had a $113,000 arrest bounty placed on them on Wednesday by Ronaldo Puno, the interior secretary.

The MILF has been waging a 30-year guerrilla campaign for a separate Islamic state in the south of the largely-Christian Philippines - a conflict that has killed over 120,000 people.

The separatists signed a ceasefire with the government in 2003 to open the way for peace talks, and both sides said in July they had completed a draft agreement for recognition of MILF's "ancestral domain" in the south.

However, the agreement on the size of a Muslim homeland and a future government's powers, including rights over exploring and developing mineral reserves, oil and gas, was halted amid protests by local Catholic politicians in Mindanao.

The Supreme Court suspended the draft accord, raising new tensions, earlier this month and the situation on the ground has deteriorated rapidly since then.

Hawks on both sides have seized on the stalling of the peace moves to re-ignite fighting that has been mostly dormant since 2003.

the Phil gov have done many wrongs before but please do not make excuses for the incompetence of the MILF leadership in controlling their officers or for these cowardly officers who butchering civilians because they don't want to be part of the ARMM. the only ones in the wrong here are the MILF for their inccompetance and these officers who butcher civilians because they are "frustrated"!? with the peace talk? if the MILF are serious about peace then these officers must face justice.

Again!!! bring it on!
The philippines gov't should think twice before adapting the same policy of all out war against MILF, by a disgraced convicted felon Estrada. how many times, previous administration adapt the same policy but fail to eradicate or minimise rebellion in mindanao. its only add fuel to the burningfire. moros will never submit to enjustice, they can be defeated in battle due to firepower of the enemy but they always return and fight again. think again ms. glo this might not be your lucky days again!

PHILIPPINE SEPARATIST WAN OF WAR
In the 80's the Government signed Tripoli Peace Agreement with Freedom Fighters of Mindanao, which has proved to be only a ploy. They are using same strategy now by having Catholic Members of Parliament raising objections. Why don't Muslim Governments in the Gulf repatriate Philippines Expat and let their loss from income remittance induce their Government into truthfullness. Catholic politician do participate in this game why don't Muslim Politicians reciprocate. Amen

Philippines Government to blame
SubanonPride is simplifying the issue. Moro and MILF have been patient and took millions of injustices, land grabbing, migration of Christians, etc. in stride. They were very sincere about signing the agreement. It was a cheap government ploy to get courts to intervene in the very last minute. The frustration and this oppressive injustice have led the MILF to show the government and other Filipinos that they will have no piece until they show sincerity towards Moro Muslims.
