Philippines MILF chief warns of war
Ebrahim said they believed that peace is possible in both words and action

The leader of Southeast Asia's biggest separatist group based in the southern Philippines has warned of escalating conflict if they are forced to defend themselves against an expanding government offensive.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa, Haji al-Murad Ebrahim, the chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), said he did not want to have "another Iraq" in South-East Asia.

But he said if his forces were "pushed to the wall" they would have no option but to retaliate.

"We are calling upon the international community to intercede," he said. "We still believe that the best situation is going back to the peace process."

The warning follows a recent spate of violence which effectively ended a ceasefire and put paid to a peace deal between the Philippine government and fighters in the volatile Muslim-majority region last month.

No terror ties

In the interview, Ebrahim also rejected accusations from some intelligence agencies that the MILF had ties with the al-Qaeda international "terror" network led by Osama bin Laden.

"We have been consistently accused of this and we have consistently also denied having any connection with the al-Qaeda and with the JI [Jemaah Islamiyah]," he said.

He, however, added that because of the war situation in Mindanao anyone could come in as "there is no control of the area".

The MILF chairman said the group was very thankful to the international community for supporting the peace process, saying they believed that peace can be achieved both on the negotiating table and on the ground.

Amina Rasul, director of the Philippine Council on Islam and Democracy, which plays a big role in Philippine Muslim civil society, said the group was "extremely worried" that the conflict will escalate and called on the United Nations and other international bodies to push for a return to negotiations.

Speaking to Al Jazeera from Manila she said that even before talks broke down there were reports that both sides were reinforcing troops, and that the recent kidnappings of aid and development workers had only added pressure to an already tense situation.

Continuing violence

Intense fighting has displaced more than half a million people
In the latest violence on Wednesday, MILF fighters attacked an army patrol in the town of Calanugas, killing seven soldiers and at least one rebel fighter, according to Philippine military officials.

Hours later they attacked an army outpost in the same town, wounding five soldiers and taking an undetermined number of casualties, Colonel Rey Ardo, the local commander, said.

In another clash on the same day, MILF fighters ambushed troops escorting labourers to a road project.

Colonel Dickson Hermoso, a local government commander, said two soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Negotiations between the government and the MILF, which wants an expanded Muslim area in the Mindanao region, broke down last month.

The parties were supposed to sign the peace deal on August 5, creating an ancestral homeland for four million Muslims.

But the deal on the size of a Muslim homeland and a future government's powers failed following protests by local Roman Catholic politicians and community leaders.

Since then, about 100 civilians have been killed and more than half a million people have lost their homes and livelihoods, creating a growing refugee crisis.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross the fighting has reached its worst level in five years.

MILF
Why does one group of people want an autonomous region inside another country because they differ in religion? Cannot all these people live and work together for their community and its development regardless of the fact that some are Muslim and others Christian? No country can function if its people want separate homelands based on religion or on race or on language. Look at the total mess in the Balkans, Georgia and its neighbours, Sri Lanka and the Tamils and in threatened regions of Iraq.

Possibility of war
I am really wondering why the Government of the Philippines is launching a new war against the MILF..Is it not because they want to save face for failing and refusing to deliver their commitment in signing the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain? What they are doing are manifestations of insincerity and bad faith..That is why for me no one could blame the MILF if they will also launch a war against the Govt. Our Govt. sad to say already lost its credibility.

Philippines MILF chief warns of war
This is the best of Filipino brand of politics. Death is for the weak and trophy for the winners. Boths side does not really care on how many people die. Its all collateral damage. Maybe they will stop fighting when no man standing. Religions of boths side does preach forgiveness but exercised extreme measure to attain its goal.

To Mary of Australia - MILF -
You're not to be blame for your mis-understanding about the Bangsamoro cause and their struggle because of your little idea behind this oldest armed conflict. I just want to inform you that the MILF is a legitimate revolutionary organization. They're fighting for self determination against grievance, tyranny, & oppression under the Philippine government & not base on religion or language, to live in one nation & become friend is excellent but how if one side is trying to kill the other?

MILF cause is clear
Miss Mary, indeed people can live and work together for their community as long as they are united but if other nation come to it's neighbor to do what makes him satisfied without legal commitment, likewise chaos may prevail. What should you do if you are in this situation. In short MILF and Phils problem is ultimately not religion but it is occupation. Ask history about this conflict. What should you do if somebody come to plunder what you have had? Of course you might resist as what you can.

Corrupt Governments
To Pedro Calong: You hit the nail right on the head Pedro. Your government does not give a damn about the soldiers or its people. Much the same as they are always looking up to the USA while forever kissing the ass of GW Bush. Well the Bush administration does not give a s*** either about its soldiers or citizens wherever they maybe. Simply all about money and power when it comes to running a country nowadays! The only thing that interests Americans(government) are both of the above plus oil!

Philippines MILF chief warns of war
The Philippine Armed Forces can not defeat the MILF Forces because they are very strong now in terms of armaments as what the Philippine Soldiers experience now in the field. So the only way is to return back to negotiation without pre-condition and should start from signing of the MOAD-AD. It is the time now for the peace loving people of the world to pressure the Philippine government to honor their commitment. Otherwise the conflict will continue from generation to generation.

Philippines MILF chief warns of war
The Philippine Government's move to abandon its peace negotiation to MILF is a very very wrong move. The European Union issued statement calling both parties to go back to the peace negotiating table, the MILF is very much willing to do so...how come the Philippine Government is not??? You want to wage war despite of your Losing Economy? Military Incapability? Corrupt Government Officials? High Poverty Rate? High Inflation Rate? High Unemployment Rate? THINK!!! PEACE is the best solution!

War a big mistake
To wage another war against the MILF will be a big mistake by the Phil. Govt specially that the economy of the Philippines plunged in its low level. The MILF can never be defeated, they are really becoming more stronger. Just yesterday it was reported that Govt troops suffers a lot of casualties in an ambush staged by the MILF in Bubonga Ranao, Calanogas, Lanao del Sur Province. Do the Gov't realize this fact or that they just don't care for the lives of its soldiers and the innocent civilians?

Refusal for Mary
No country can function if its people want separate homelands based on religion or on race or on language...What should do think about Great Britain and Spain achievement despite of the Ita's and Ireland Republican revolution, right now where they are. How about the Philippines, where it's now?Plunged of crisis in it's low level. What would made it so? There is a clear cause, Philippines doesn't want do for the sake of it's people. Therefore, what do you think about MILF reaction?

The Filipino Oligarchy
A few families control most of the productive land, wealth, resources, and power in the Philippines. This Filipino oligarchy owes its existence to 333 years of Spanish colonial rule and 50 years of American rule. The Philippine government is dominated by these elite families who only care about further enriching themselves at the expense of everyone. There will be no end to the Moro separatist conflict nor Communist insurgency until the government enacts a genuine, comprehensive land reform.

Corruption the real reason in War campaign of the AFP
An Audit Report recently unveils various types of corruption committed by military officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in their recent war campaign against the Bangsamoro people. The report cited among others: illegal insertions in the budget over declaration of salaries and combat pay of military personnel over declaration of numbers of civilian militias. The report hits a lot of top generals including AFP chief of staff Gen. Alexander Yano. What kind of gov't does the Phil. have?
