An Afghan translator of an Italian journalist kidnapped last month has been killed by the Taliban after demands to free its men were not met.

Shahabuddin Atal, a spokesman for Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban's military head, said: "We waited a lot, but the government failed to meet our demand. Therefore, we killed Adjmal [Nashkbandi] today."
Daniele Mastrogiacomo, a La Repubblica reporter, was kidnapped along with his driver and the translator last month.

The Taliban freed the Italian after two weeks when Kabul released five of its members, but the fighters beheaded Mastrogiacomo's driver and continued to hold his translator.

Deal criticised

The Mastrogiacomo deal has been widely criticised in Italy and Afghanistan, with security experts saying that it would trigger more abductions of foreigners.

Last week, two French aid workers, a man and a woman, were kidnapped along with three Afghan colleagues in the Nimroz province between Iran and Afghanistan's Helmand province.

On Friday, Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president, ruled out any more prisoner swaps with the Taliban.

The fighters are also holding five Afghan health officials and have demanded the release of more of their men.

No ransom demand has yet been issued in return for freeing the French pair.
