India faces confidence vote
Manmohan Singh is predicting his government will win the confidence vote [AFP]

The Indian government may collapse as the country's politicians gather to debate a vote of confidence over a civilian nuclear deal with the US.

Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, was forced to call the vote on Monday after his left-wing and communist allies withdrew their support for the Congress party-led coalition in protest over the nuclear deal, which they fear will draw their country closer to the US.

India is widely considered a "non-aligned" country.

Analysts say the vote, to be held on Tuesday, is too close to call.

Ahead of Monday's debate, Singh expressed confidence that the government will survive.

He appealed to members of parliament and assured them that the nuclear agreement was done "in the best interests of our people".

The government will need a simple majority of votes, but opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu nationalist party, are equally confident.

"The government is today like a patient in an intensive care unit. The first question naturally asked is, 'is he going to survive or not?'" said Lal Krishna Advani, the BJP leader.

If a vote of no-confidence is levelled against the Congress-led coalition, early elections will be announced and must be held within six months.

The stakes are so high that the government has reportedly released six members of parliament, currently serving jail terms, to vote.

India tested nuclear weapons in 1974 and 1998 and refuses to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and is currently barred from buying nuclear technology and fuel.

The deal would allow such purchases but subject India's civilian nuclear sites to international controls such as UN inspections, said to ensure that any purchases are not diverted for military use.

Opponents say the deal will compromise India's position as a politically neutral country, and that the requisite UN inspections would limit the country's ability to develop its weapons programme and deter Pakistan, its main regional rival.

'Subservient partner'

They also argue that there are strings attached, and doing a deal with the US would undermine its freedom to buy oil and gas  from countries such as Iran, or shop for armaments with traditional suppliers including Russia.

The communists and the BJP are also trying to widen the terms of the debate.

They have been speaking out against rising food and fuel prices - inflation is currently around 12 per cent - and arguing that hundreds of millions of the poorest people have been left behind in India's economic boom.

But the core issue is the nuclear deal - a topic spanning India's energy security as well as its place in the world.

Advani told parliament: "We are not against nuclear energy. We are not against a very close relationship with America. But we would never like India to become party to an agreement which is unequal.

"This deal makes us a subservient partner. It makes India a junior partner."

confidence vote
India is already following the americans. Look at their movies nowadays. Similiar to that of the americans. Look at the way the indian women dress these days. Just like the americans, the west. Where is the modesty of our indian women. Now it's all nakedness.

Nuclear pact
Hi guys, i truely understand and agree to what is written by few of the friends above. Don't you guys think there is some positive for india in this deal. To me this deal should be changed to make india gain more out of this deal rather than talking of scrapping it. We need nuclear energy more than any other nation, if we have a chance then why not to grab it. Have anybody wondered how much benefit it would be for India if we generate energy using nuclear material.

US NUCLEAR AGREEMENT .
It's history but very relevant to India and all Indians . Every Indian should read the Atlantic Treaty drawn up by Churchill and Roosevelt which in many ways became the catalyst for India's independence. THEN THEY SHOULD RE-ACT ON IT .

India faces confidence vote
If the treaty was equal as Mr. Advani said, it would've been beneficial. However, it was wrong of Mr. Singh to impose a treaty on the biggest democracy of the world. The government could've bargained with the U.S.A.

Energy for the people
This issue should be more about energy for the common people than about alignment with the US. I guess those who are against the agreement would either be those who are privileged enough not to face power cuts, or those who have not seen the power supply systems of the places outside India. I personally don't like the policies of the US, but that's not the point.

Silly for India to not shop in Russia. Shipping charges are less. Big Oil doesn't want the world to go to the breeder-reactor and would have us believe that "terrorists" would easily steal weapons grade material. The interlocking directorships of the businesses of Arms, Oil, Drugs, Media are protecting their profits by hiding the fact that the breeder reactor is the energy system of the future. Study it.
