British forces kill Taliban leader
Four brothers who were police officers were killed in an attack on their home [AFP]

British troops have killed a senior Taliban leader in southern Afghanistan hours after another leader surrendered to Pakistani forces, dealing a "shattering blow" to the group's leadership according to British officials.

Abdul Rasaq, a senior Taliban commander also known as "Mullah Sheikh", was killed in a missile strike 15km north of the town of Musa Qala in Helmand on Monday morning, British army officials said.

The surrender of Mullah Rahim, the top commander for southern Helmand province, hours earlier followed the deaths of two other Taliban leaders in recent weeks.

"The Taliban's senior leadership structure has suffered a shattering blow," Lieutenant-Colonel Robin Matthews, a British army spokesman, said in the statement on Tuesday.

Three other fighters had also died in the air strike, added the statement.

Elsewhere, US-led and Afghan forces backed by air strikes killed or wounded at least 30 Taliban fighters in western Afghanistan, the regional police chief, Ikramuddin Yawar, said on Tuesday.

Yawar said the toll in the fighting which broke out in the Bala Boluk district of Farah province was likely to be higher "because the operation is ongoing".

Continuing violence

Also on Tuesday, a US-led convoy was hit by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Bala Boluk, a US army spokesman said.

In the central province of Ghazni, four brothers who were Afghan police officers were killed in an attack on their home late on Monday. Their father was also captured.

The interior ministry in a statement blamed the attack on the "opposition", a reference to the Taliban and other fighters the government says are trying to destabilise it.

In Khost province on the border with Pakistan, at least four people were killed, including a woman and child, when a remote-controlled bomb exploded underneath a pick-up truck.

Colonel Mohammad Yaqoub Mondozai, the deputy provincial police chief, said three other people were also wounded in the blast.

In the capital Kabul, a suicide bomber blew himself up, wounding five people, the interior ministry said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

With due respect, it is to be stated that the photo showing the policemen strenth of improvements in Afghan Militry force. However, it is worth mentioning that the photo was taken during the demostration held in Kabul on July 22, 2008. The demostration was held by Hazaras inhibitants of Afghanistan over the killing and land encrochements of Behsood district Hazaras of Wardak province by Kochies backed by some elements in Afghanistan. Nonetheless, there is no report of demostration here

Re:photo
Abdul - good point, I didn't see why they would be showing a picture of riot police for this story. Do you know of any other news sources that covered the land encroachments?

Demonstration over Land Encrochements of Hazaras in Afghanistan
Hello Ben, Yes, there are two local TVs stations (Farda & Tamadon) which covered the news. They broadcasted the the deserted villages burned and destroyed during the last two years in Behsood as well as the interviews with families of the victimes. This is simply a matter of shame to see the level of social disparity in Afghanistan. I dont really undrestand what these too many NGOs are doing in Afghanistan, whereas there is no results. And more frustrating to see no one pay attention to this.

Who are Kochies
I agree with Marzia, the Kochies are the tribes living in Pakistan NWFP. they come from districts of Mangora, Swat, Dir, and Waziristan. The districts which is now a haven for Taliban and Al Qaida. During the Taliban era, large number of the taliban were from Pakistan, and they were the ones massacared more than hundred thousands people in Bamyan and other provinces of Afghanistan. They dont came for grass land, but they claim the land. they kill and force Hazaras out of thier land like israel s

RE: HAZARAS
IT REALLY BOTHERS ME TO SEE MAJOR NEWS AGENCIES TO IGNORE THE MASSIVE PROBLEMS THE HAZARAS ARE FACING IN CENTRAL AFGHANISTAN TODAY. APPARENTLY BEING ATTACKED BY KOCHIES (AKA AFGHAN/PAKISTANIS) IS NOT WORTHY OF NEWS COVERAGE. MAYBE BECAUSE THE GOVERENMENT IS BEHIND THE ATTACKS AND THE MEDIA IS NOT ALLOWED TO REPORT ON THE ISSUE. NO ONE WANTS TO HELP HAZARAS, THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE, AND IT GETS ME SO MAD TO SEE THIS SHIT TALKING KARZAI SIT ON HIS LAZY ASS AND WATCHING HAZARAS GET KILLED.

Indeed the photo used here is an AP photo (Getty Images) from the demonstration in Kabul hold on July 22, 2008 against the Afghan government in regard to the ongoing Kochi-Hazara conflict in Behsood, and government’s silence and not providing basic security to its citizens. Aljazeera constantly fails to cover news impartially and fulfill its unbiased journalistic duties. This is just an example. It appears that Aljazeera has a long way to go to become a reliable source of

Sorry Ben to give you the URL path of the news publication in BBC here it is. While, it is published in BBD, but it seems the reporter to be biased & is vague. At least it should have had an analysis paragraph. It seems quite strange that the so called nomad with herds of 90-80 sheps can buy, carry, & maintain RPG,AK47,Hand Grenads, Land mines and other tons of amunitions and fight for MONTHS and displace more then 700 families from thier houses.
