Kashmiris march to UN office

Protest leaders presented a petition against Indian rule to UN officials [AFP]

Tens of thousands of Muslims have taken to the streets of Indian Kashmir's main city to demand that the United Nations recognise their right to self-determination.

Security was tight on Monday as a mass of people marched to a local UN office, in defiance of official warnings against holding the rally in Srinagar, still tense after deadly clashes last week.

The UN office in Srinagar houses personnel who monitor ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, or the de facto border dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

"I have never seen such a big rally in Srinagar," Abdul Aziz, a 75-year-old shopkeeper who was taking part in the procession, said.

"I couldn't resist coming out to demand freedom from India," he said, as he marched towards the UN office carrying a placard that read: "If freedom for Kosovo, why not for Kashmir?"

The marchers included men, women and children, who chanted slogans including "We want freedom" and "We will give blood for Kashmir's freedom".

Many also carried green or black flags - symbolising Islam and mourning.

Hundreds of lorries and buses overflowing with protesters, some sitting on roofs and hanging out of windows, had made their way across the disputed Himalayan region to Srinagar for the protest.

Petition presented

The crowd tore down a barbed wire fence to reach the UN office, where organisers from Kashmir's main separatist All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference alliance, handed over a petition against Indian rule.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a separatist leader, said that the plea urges the UN "to intervene and help us in achieving the right to self-determination".

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, another leader, told the crowd to demand "the UN, the US, Britain and international community to come and see what people want here".

"This is a struggle for right to self-determination," he said. "The UN should send its peacekeepers to Jammu as well as Kashmir."

There are decades-old UN Security Council resolutions calling for a referendum to allow the Kashmiri people to choose between India and Pakistan, but they have never been implemented.

Last week, 22 Muslim demonstrators were killed in police firing in the Kashmir valley as they vented their anger over a blockade of the area by Hindu hardliners.

Land dispute

The latest tensions between Muslims and Hindus centre around a small piece of land in the valley that was awarded to a Hindu pilgrimage trust, sparking Muslim protests.

The land transfer order was then rescinded, sparking a blockade by Hindus who dominate the south of Jammu and Kashmir state - from where the main road access to the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley comes.

Manmohan Singh, India's prime minister, has called for calm in the region.

"All political parties, all right-thinking people must work together to bring the situation under control," he told reporters outside parliament in New Delhi.

Hindu-majority Jammu also saw more protests on Monday as thousands of people defied a ban on public gatherings there and gathered in large groups hoping to court arrest.

Suchet Singh, one of the organisers, said that such gatherings would go on for three days and that more than 100,000 people were expected to take part.

Kishmirs UNprotest
UN secretariat and its head Bum-K-Moon works for principal organs of the security councils of the United Nations and administers the policies and directives laid down by them. To keep his $375,000/yearly salary, he has to concentrate Lebanon, Iran, Sudan, Syria, N. Korea, Zimbabwe etc. for the sake of those powers. So, what we need is UN reform to empower UN secretariat then demonstrate.

Kashmiris March to UN Office
I feel very happy that Aljazeera.net is now publishing the stories of hapless muslims of Kashmir, thanks for it. However, i would like to express my dissent about the coverage of Aljazeera English (TV Network) on the Kashmir Issue. I think Aljazeera English TV is not paying much attention on the burning issue of Kashmir as should be. I would like to make a point Georgia - Russia war has claimed only few hundred lives, whileas Kashmir problem has consumed more than a lakh people for last 20 yrs.

Greetings
Assalamualaikum guys. im thankful to aljazeera brothers for showing the Indian armed agression in the Indian Occupied Jammu And Kashmir. The so called secular state is engaged in Muslim Genocide that has resulted in the killing of about 100 thousand kashmiri youth. Equal number of people are displaced and languishing in Indian Jails. We are paying the price for demand of an end to Indian military occupation in a region that is recognized as a dispute by UN and the whole world.

Simple Solution !!
Secularism and democracy has failed because Govt hardly pays a heed to what people of J&K have to say.Just three genuine demands :- 1.Open up Muzzafarabad Road for trade. 2.Reduce the Special Authority given to Indian Troops(Main cause for innocent people killings). 3. Release of innocent kashmiri people locked up in jails against unproved charges. What if these demands would have come from any other state. They would have been approved there and then. But why is India being so cruel

Unbiased reporting
As a trainee journalist, I must laud Al Jazeera for its unbiased reporting of an issue, that the world seems to be ignoring. We report everything there is to report about deals and diplomacy, but somehow, disputes, dying people and wars in the smaller and 'lesser important' regions of the world are ignored. However, as a staunch Kashmiri Pandit, I don't know what to say. I was born in Srinagar. My family evacuated, against their wishes, after numerous threats from various 'organisations' when I

I think aljazeera is one of the very few news channels that are actually showing the rising of Kashmiri people. I am a Kashmiri and I feel that the thing which is needed at this time is international awakening and support for Kashmir & its people. Carry on the good work... guys!!There's more to come.

Moslems must face reality about the UN and other agencies around the World
While the UN caters like the Olympus to the superpowers and rich nations Moselm nations includes rich nations who do not impress on the UN or Olympus to have a fair share at all or to have conflicts resolved. The UN has been monitoring and dealing with conflicts in the Middle EAst and Moslem World in terms of management not resolution and who is to be blamed for that? The Moslem Nations or over 57 nations in the UN without teeth. Resolutions will come-Moslem people demonstrating (as Kashmir).

Kashmir should have been free longtime ago.too bad now days the international comunity does not live up to it own international rules when it comes the most oppressed people.Look at Ogaden the Ethiopian forces are commiting one of the biggest Genocide in this century and they are doing it with impunity since the leaders of the international community fully support and finance their attrocities against the Ogaden Civilians. We must free out selves becouse the people you expect to hepl us dont care

Enough to oppression
Let the Kashmiris get the right to choose their own destiny, if the democracy tells us that it is peoples wish then why the "greatest democracy on Earth" is not willing to give it to the Kashmiris, those who are living under oppression since 1947.

Kashmir Indepencence
Any place in the world belongs to its people although it can be occupied by force. That is the reality of Kashmir. On 15th August when whole of India was celebrating its independence day, there was a complete shutdown, Kashmiri flags were hoisted on all the high rises including telecom towers by ordinary Kashmiri’s and in the evening all the lights including lights in homes were switched of to protest against the Indian occupation of Kashmir. The rise in oppression continues where civilians demo

I appreciate the Aljazzera for bringing the news of the kashmir to the people of world. These days as the kashmir is burning, i am very much shocked that except Aljazeera the world media is sleeping. Today the moment of the kashmiri people is totlay peaceful but it does not get any coverage, but as we have seen it in the past whenever it is the voilance there it is being quoted. It is very unfortunate that the people of kashnir are dying but there is no media to highlight there plight.

Kashmir Issue
If India is claiming to be a democratic, why can’t they realize the reality that Kashmiries want freedom, Kashmiries are not against India we do respect the India as well like all hundreds of other counties of the world subjected to they leave Kashmir once for all. We sacrificed lakhs of young youths for attaining the freedom... I want to bring it in the notice of India… “Leave Kashmir”… is the ultimate option… Even think tanks of India knows this fact… as far as economy of India is concerned….

Kashmir crisis
It is now visible for whole world and almost all indians what kashmiris want and those who want to hear. Even Indian human rights activists like Gautam Navlakha, Arundhati Roy have clearly told Indian authorities to give freedom to Kashmiris. BUt due To Indian strong hold in west the US, Uk and all other powerful nations are mum . UN is silent which is a frave concern. Western media is not covering these issues wher hundreds of thousands are leading marches and crying for freedom. Aljazeera Thnx

Free Kashmir from India
Indians always consider Kashimr to be an integral part of India. Why is it then when bullets were being showered on innocent civilians on their march to Muzaffarabad, just seeking an alternative route, the media was busy showing their olympic god medal win and the news about the shooting of innocent Kashmiris, killing 20 and wounding 300 others, was presented as if it happened in Afghanistan?

Kashmir UN march
You can judge from the overwhelming response from readers over Kashmir coverage because Indian media as well as most of the international media has been very biased whenever it is about Kashmir problem. 800,000 people march didn’t catch eye of most of international news channels. They consider mood of Indian prime minister before reporting anything & if that goes in their interests or world has now certainly divided into muslim and non-mulism block.

Kashmiri protests
Indian citizens may be not believe it when they see the truth which is out on Aljazeera as there media is not reporting facts as it is part of Indian war machinery against Kashmiris. We simply want freedom from India as we were never part of India and world knows it. New Delhi denial is not more than devilish. I must point out we kashmiris are fighting independence and not against any religion. We will welcome Hindu Yatris as we have been doing it in 150 years. ( Srinagar. Country - Kashmir)

was exactly an year old. I have few memories of Kashmir, but of those few holidays spent there as a guest, in my own motherland. I have however, many fond memories of Jammu. Its ironical, how a once integral part of Kashmir, the Pandits, are not even mentioned, let alone considered when we talk of 'freedom' and other lofty concepts. We have lost (almost) our culture, our language alongwith our people. Isn't that a lot to loose? So when will the people wake up and realise, that its as much about

Pandits as it is about Muslims. Jammu and Kashmir have never been seperate states. Do we plan to do that now? Let us then seperate Leh too. Lets shrink ourselves, so much so, that we aren't seen. My plea, is not a big one, just that KASHMIRIS rise as one for whatever it is that they truly want. Kashmir is for all Kashmiris, not just muslims or pandits. Let us please understand that, once and for all.

Kashmiris must undetstand that J&K is an integral part of India. For long you have been given special rights. Its high time that we lift it. Rather then listening to hardliners concentrate on education and development. We will continue to shoot the hardliners unless they leave India. Believe me India is not Afganistan or Iraq that UN can intervene. UN does not have that power. Even Pakistan cannot deter us no matter how much arms it supplies to terrorist. Come to senses

ppl are ignoring important things
In their news report that apparently lacks bias, Al Jazeera has ignored many key points. First of all, it was the state gov't (of Kashmir) that wanted to proceed with the land transfer, not the gov't of India. Also it is against the indian constitution for ppl of other states to settle in Kashmir (this has always been respected by India).
