'Scores' of Afghans dead in US raid
Karzai said that attacks by foreign forces have succeeded only in killing civilians [EPA]

Afghanistan's interior ministry says US-led forces killed 76 civilians in an operation on Wednesday in the west of the country, directly contradicting the US military which said 30 suspected Taliban had died.

"Seventy-six people, all civilians and most of them women and children, were martyred during the operation by coalition forces in Shindand district of Herat province," the ministry said on Friday.

"Nineteen women, seven men and the rest children all under 15 years of age," were killed in the operation, the statement said.

The ministry said it would be one of the highest civilian deaths tolls in the battle against the Taliban since they were ousted from power during the 2001 US-led invasion.

A US military spokesman said he had no knowledge of the non-combatant deaths.

Afghan investigation

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reported that the Afghan interior ministry's figures had been confirmed by the provincial governor and police chief.

She said that the information had been gathered by a team of investigators from the army, police and intelligence service. They had retrieved bodies from houses that had been bombed. They expect the toll to rise as not all the houses have been checked.

"People are very angry," Khodr said. "This is not the first time. Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, has made repeated calls for Nato to stop air strikes."

Akramuddin Yawer, the police chief for western Afghanistan, said that Taliban were among the dead but their numbers were unknown.

Daoud Sultanzoy, an Afghan MP, told Al Jazeera that when the Taliban are in villages and civilian areas, it is very difficult to separate them from civilians when Nato rely on air attacks.

"With either good or bad intelligence, the most important lesson to learn from this is that we need to rely more on ground troops," he said.

"Since Nato and the coalition don't have these troops, the reliance on air support is greater. So, if they can increase their ground operations it would probably alleviate some of these problems."

"[The Taliban] don't have offices," he said. "This is a civilian house. And regretfully, when a bombing takes place - an aerial bombing, or any kind of smart bombing - definitely, you will have these kind of regretful casualities."

Figures disputed

General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the defence ministry spokesman, however, provided different figures, saying only five civilians - three women and two children - had died.

"Planes bombed the area and in the result, 25 Taliban were killed, including two famous commanders," Azimi said. "Unfortunately, five civilians were killed and one woman and a boy were wounded.

The air assault on Wednesday that caused the deaths were called in to respond to an attack on troops operating in Laghman province, which adjoins the Sarobi area where 10 French soldiers died earlier in the week, the US-led forces said.

"During the operation, more than 30 militants were killed and a large cache of mortar rounds and IED [improvised explosive device] materials were destroyed by the commandos," they said in a statement.

The attacks were called when the area was clear of women and children after about 200 civilians were seen fleeing, and there were no civilian casualties, the statement said.

The issue of civilian casualties caused by foreign forces fighting the Taliban has led to a rift between Afghanistan and its Western backers.

Karzai said this month that air attacks by foreign forces had succeeded only in killing civilians and not in winning the war.

Nothing but war crimes.
We continue to see the death of scores of innocent people by the hand of the US. If they responsible were to be any other country, it would immediately be labelled a War Crime and US itself would crying out for justice and punishment. Saddam Hussein was charged and sentenced to death for such crimes it makes me wonder if the US Commander in chief and all others responsible for all these deaths will ever have the same justice applied to them?

it's not that they don't have ground troops. They don't want to rely on ground troops because they knew what is facing them..The ambush on the French recently really make them think about going on the ground

US bombings of the innocent.
I can't understand how these people sleep at night. How can one commit an unthinkable act as such, surely they have kids and families at home, sisters, mothers, aunts, loved ones. How much hatred can one have towards another human being to resort to such violence and murder and mayhem. They relive this again and again in their televisions and the war channels.Ofcourse, the general public doesn't get to see what happens in the killing fields, but vietnam should be fresh in their minds. This is sickening.

Civilians death
This is a crime against humanity - but no surprise that western media in silence and no doubt that US will continue the strikes because it is the easiest and safest method for western militaries. It is clear that they are not so brave to fight on ground. The question is only how long the people of Afghanistan will tolerate such massacres.

Scores of Afghans dead in US raid
The US led NATO occupational force behave as the worst war criminals in Irak and in Afghanistan! Will the civilized nations of this earth not stand up against these murderous lunatics in the US, UK,Israel and other regimes which bring murder and devastation on other people whose sole "fault" is to possess mineral resources (oil and gas) or strategic locations which the US and its criminal allies covet. I am grateful for strong Russia and China.

It is a problem as old as politics
This article displays the CLASSIC and inherent problem with politicians not understanding military actions and military actions being enflamed by the media in an effort to be the first to break the story. Although I do not doubt the facts being presented in this article are true to the best of the writers knowledge, it's clear that much speculation still exists as to what actually happened amongst the gov't itself. I wouldn't expect the U.S. explanaition to hold any validity on this site.

civilian deaths
It's a drama. Hamid Karzai obviously wants his masters in west to be happy at any cost. If e regrets he should chase out these foreign occupants who wants to wipe off Islam from the face of earth. But its not possible. Whatever done you cannot change the fate. Muslims will prevail and infidels will loose this war on Islam. This systematic form of cleansing is covertly endorsed by many Muslim leaders who are lap dogs of these infidels.

"civilians"
Not a single terrorist or taliban member is in any Military Unit so they are civilians. It is these scumbags who intentionally target civilians in markets, schools, and mosques. Why isn't the world condeming them?

Super"cowards"Power,US.
This is just great. We have the world's best trained soldiers and the best pilots and they keep murdering innocent people. The self proclaimed"home of the brave"US are such cowards they can't fight the Talibans on the ground, they have to resort to air attacks and kill innocent women and children. No wonder some of the soldiers return home and turn the gun on themselves and their families, they can't live with the shame and guilt of being cowards.they are old enough to kill and old enough to quit.

The filthiest war in the human History
So since a couple of years the strongiest armies in the world slaughter the civilians of one of the poorest countries of the planet. It's not a war, it's a genocide. I assert the latest mass massacre was a retaliation for the losses of the occupational troops inflicted upon them by the resisters. It's interesting to know this is a Nazi method for "control" of an occupied nation. Thus the Nazis concidered the totality of the French population as hostages and were killing civilians to revenge.

"civilian" casualties
It seems almost impossible to get any facts on this story. I have read that this air strike was on the funeral of a local Taliban commander. Are the people in attendance to be considered civilian? Three Canadian soldiers came home in body bags yesterday. Canadians are led to believe that we are protecting the human rights of Afghani's, especially women and children who have been so abused and deceived by the Taliban. Is this not so?
