Afghan children killed by Nato fire

Nato-led troops have killed three Afghan children and injured seven during artillery fire in Afghanistan's eastern province of Paktika.

Nato officials said that the attack on Monday happened by accident.

The deaths in Paktika province are expected to deepen the rift between foreign forces and the Afghan government.

The Afghan government has said that more than 500 civilians have been killed during operations by foreign and Afghan forces this year.

'Investigation under way'

In the latest incident, troops fired artillery rounds after a patrol came under fire from Taliban fighters in Paktika's Gayan district, Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said.

The rounds fell close to a house where the children were later found dead.

"ISAF deeply regrets this accident and an investigation as to the exact circumstances of this tragic event is now under way," the ISAF said in a statement.

Dad Mohammad Khan, a former provincial intelligence chief and politician, said: "There is basically no Taliban [killed]. The Taliban fire and then escape and then these people [foreign troops] come and bombard. Three hundred people have been killed and wounded".

The incident came hours after the US-led coalition command said its troops killed more than 220 fighters in a week of fighting in the same province. The coalition did not say where the militants were killed.

Fuelling anger

Meanwhile in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, hundreds of protesters blocked a road, accusing foreign troops of killing a family of four, including two children.

The family members were killed in an overnight raid by international troops, a police official and witnesses said.

Residents in Hud Kheil in the east of Kabul said one of the two children was eight months old and grenades killed the family members during a joint Afghan-US special forces operation.

However, US special forces said they were not involved.

"It was past one o'clock when the troops came and surrounded our houses," Sulaiman, one resident, said.

"They threw hand grenades in one house and killed three family members," he said.

Some locals told Al Jazeera there was an exchange of fire and that the family may have been caught in the crossfire.

The latest deaths are likely to further strain relations between Afghanistan and the US and other foreign forces in the country, who have been accused of using excessive force in civilian areas.

The operation came a day after Nato said it received information from a "reliable source" that pro-Taliban fighters may be planning to falsely claim that international forces killed up to 70 civilians in southern Afghanistan.

The operation also comes after Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president, sacked an Afghan army general and a major after more than 100 civilians were reported to have been killed in an attack by US-led coalition forces.

Violence in Afghanistan is at its worst level this year, the bloodiest period since the Taliban was forced from power in 2001.

worthless
Why the killing of Afghan children, women and old men has become so worthless even to be mentioned. What would have happened if these kids were American or Israelis? They would not need to be killed, enough for them to get slight injury and at that time we will hear the strongest condemnation form the top level and see swift actions on the ground.

Afghan children killed by Nato fire
It is extremely unacceptable for this occupiers to be continuously killing small children in their country. Why these continued unabated? What is the govt. representing them doing? Don't they think they will be judged on the day of judgement. The occupiers were only bunch of hypocrites. Imagine if the children were Israelis? Because you know they were better than Americans even to their Government. Somebody somewhere should please stop these.

Khilafah
Muslims should unite, we are 1 Ummah, we must have 1 nation (Khilafah), 1 government and 1 army. We do need these seperate countries, nationalism is haraam. All over the Muslim world innocents are being killed daily because of these nationalistic governments. All financed by the West.

Children killed by Nato Fire
You people are obviously not reading the whole article. It says they were attacking leaders...who chose to be living in their family home...who chose to put their family...including women and children at risk! Why? They know they are targets....stay away from the ones they love to protect them...or this is what happens. I'm a mother and wife and if my husband was wanted and known to be a target, I would refuse his presence in my home around our family.

How much longer is the world going to put up with war crimes against children of the poorest of the poor? Thank goodness though that the resistance in Afghanistan and elsewhere have been quite dramatic against invaders who have the most advanced weapons systems in history. There would be a world-wide uproar if it were western kids being slaughtered. "Liberators", go back from where you come from!

Response to: Khuram re: Khilafah
Khuram, while your Utopian and idealistic ideas about 1 Ummah are for good purpose,it wont happen.Nationalism is not harram and has a place among mankind.Pakistan is the only country founded on/for Islam because ethnic Panjabs/Sindhis/Hindus/etc. left mother India in the name of Islam. The solution to this Afghan problem is to allow proud Afghans to govern themselves and through logic and compromise cleanse themselves of ethnic differences and build defense and economy.

Warlords
US it the biggest warlord in the world, supported by many "followers" or "underdogs". In 2008, the US wants to rule the world with guns. They have all rights to kill children and women, but they themselves declear prisoners of war of being people with no rights at all. What a shame to the "free world" and the democracy distribution by guns American style.

You will never ever read or hear in western countries news about the ruthless killings conducted by US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. When is this brainless Karzai going to understand that he is dispensable once US wishes to dump him like they did with various leaders world wide

Afghan children killed by Nato fire
When Nato troops can’t fight the militants on the ground, they attack and kill women and children from the air. Cowards. Shades of Vietnam War all over again… the brave Vietnamese people were brutally subjected to the same unmanly tactics. But once the US forces fled with their tails between the legs, Vietnam was at peace. It’s now time for Afghans to again teach the gutless foreign troops a lesson. May victory be with you. – Proud Afghan

Murdered children in Afghanistan.
First of all the crooked and corrupt leader Karzai needs to be sacked.I have mentioned several times in my comments which haven't been posted that Karzai and his family are well of now because of the US fattening his bank account. They live in big homes and drive big cars like celebrities. He can't handle this situation in Afghanistan,as soon as the US is done with him they will bring someone else and replace Karzai.I say the Afghan people should give him the boot.

Is there any HUMAN RIGHTS ORG?
Amazingly all the Human Rights Organizations are quite about the killing of "innocent" childrens,. The Human Rights Activits are for the rights of white skin humans and others are not Humans according the defination of Western powers and there allies "HUMAN RIGHTS ORG". Millions of kids died in Palistine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir and not a single issue raised by so called HUMAN RIGHTS org. Which clearly shows that that these Human Right NGO's are proxy of WESTERN killingmachines.

Truth and lies
It is a lie to state that nobody cares or report. As for the press, ISAF/EF raids with civilian victims are reported on a daily basis by all main western media. UN/NGOs are very vocal in this respect. The ICRC is detecting such abuses and intervenes with armed forces (US, international, Afghan, but also Taleban) to stop them. ICRC has even been speaking out publicly about the civilian casualties for years. The problem is not lack of reporting abuses, it's stopping them!

They have suffered enough
I always heard about one or two US soldiers killed in Afghanistan. and such news stays on TVs and media for weeks. I really become angry, sometimes having tears in my eyes whenever I hear about those few soldiers killed in Afghanistan. But I just thought : what about those Afghans who have lost about two million of their dear ones since thirty years & still suffering.what about those moms who lost their sweet children. f I have tears for one or two soldiers, then how much tears will they have?

Afghan Blood is NOT cheap!
The U.S. likes to bend the truth. The truth is the Americans like to spill Afghan blood. They have continuously claimed they kill Taliban and that Talibs like to hide amongst civilians. Which is 100% bull shit. The U.S. will regret the day they invaded my country because we Afghans will not stand in the sidelines while our people are being massacred.

Afghan children killed
I also feel for the ,I hope, majority of Americans who are horrified by the ongoing killing of innocent people by their military machine. What would help would be for the American public to petition their parliamentarians to push for their nation to respect the Geneva Conventions on Warfare. In particular the one on ensuring the target is a military one. No More Guessworck Please!
