Deaths as bombs rock Indian capital

A woman is evacuated following one of the blasts in New Delhi [AFP]

A group calling itself the Indian Mujahidin has claimed responsibility for a series of bomb blasts that have rocked India's capital, New Delhi, leaving up to 20 people dead and 40 injured.

Six explosions hit five separate areas in New Delhi's bustling business district within minutes of each other on Saturday, injuring weekend shoppers.

Police also found an additional two bombs which they successfully defused, Al Jazeera's corresondent reported.

Bloodstained clothes, badly damaged cars with shattered windows and mangled motorbikes littered the areas where the explosions took place.

Television broadcasts showed a scene of chaos, with wounded people being carried away by civilians and emergency service workers.

Shakeel Ahmad, Delhi's home minister, told Al Jazeera "the number of casualites may go a little higher, because the number of people admitted to different hospitals is still not known".

The so-called Indian Mujahidin group, which also said it was responsible for a string of five bomb attacks in July in the western commercial city of Ahmedabad that killed at least 45 people, made the claim in an email to India's NDTV, the Press Trust of India said.

NDTV quoted the email as saying: "In the name of Allah, the Indian Mujahidin has struck back again."

Little is known about the group who also threw down a challenge to India's security agencies in the email, saying "do whatever you want and stop us if you can".

'Maximum alert'

Matt McClure, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Delhi, said: "The first blast happened at 6.15pm in Karol Bagh, a busy market in central Delhi."

One bomb in Karol Bagh had been planted in a rickshaw and another in a scooter behind it, Indian media reported.

McClure said: "A separate blast hit Connaught Place, the central business district, including a blast within a rubbish bin in central park, which at this time would have been full of thousands of people."

Twenty people were reported to have been injured in the explosion at the Gopaldas Bhawan car park.

"We heard a very loud noise, then we saw people running all over the place," Chanchal Kumar, a witness whose shirt was soaked in the blood of several victims he had helped carry into ambulances, said.

"There were about 100-200 people around this place," he said.

A blast on Barakhamba Road then went off near the metro station, after which twin blasts were reported in the Greater Kailash market.

Bomb disposal squads rushed to the bomb-sites which were cordoned off.

Authorities turned off mobile phone networks amid fears phones could be used to trigger more blasts.

The bomb attacks come after similar attacks in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

The neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana as well as all major Indian cities have been put on maximum alert.

A Despicable Act
We condemn this despicable act that has achieved nothing but spilling of innocent blood. I am ashamed to share the same religion as them.

Indian bombing
sounds great this bombing, people rush off and blame muslim terrorist. be careful because the CIA is well known to run false-flag operations - and blame unknown groups! it basically an attempt by the US to conspire to get India to align it stratergy with its own - so they can have another ally to attack China as this war is on the horizon.

I agree with Raj
I doubt any Islamic group is behind this. I honestly do not understand any reasoning behind this whatsoever. Could have been easily orchestrated by the CIA to bring India to the American side. I personally also think that suicide attacks in Iraq are in fact mainly CIA's handiwork. Why Not? it provides them with grounds to stay in there as long as they want. No-one will know the truth. Not in this world. But one DAY the truth will come out about who did these horrific acts. I will be waiting.

Deaths as bombs rock Indian capital
The persons who committed these atrocious crime do not represent the interests of Islam or Muslims but are splinter groups of confused, angry and alienated persons seeking to vent their mindless rage on innocent persons and a state that has supported the rights of Muslims around the world.

blaming muslim terrorists
to Raj... the Indian Mujahedeen is openly claiming responsibility for the attack. As far as I can tell no one's 'rushing off and blaming' anyone.

Deaths as Bombs rock Indian Capital
This is a well calculated mass murder by a faceless person or even group who are masquerading behind Islam so as to have scapegoats as always on who to blame. This must be the handiwork of a security establishment: My thoughts: Either the CIA, Mossad or even Indian spy network must be involved in this. May the soul of those innocent souls rest in peace.

Indian Bombings
whoever behind this explosions are not at all human being, I dont think a Muslim could have done this coz, This is holy Ramadan month, Everyone knows, Muslims know this very well, Allah knows Everything, It might be a political drama, last time a bomb blast held at Ahamadabad in India and Media had received an email from the same group then it was traced out, It was sent from Mumbai in an apartment where two foreigners stayed, we read it in the news, What happened next??? that news kept at dark

Nothing new
People like Raj are the most annoying. They don'r stay in their country - they go to look for better life in the UK - the best ally of the US. However, he knows that it is much easier to criticize the US than the Muslims, that's why he chooses to accuse the CIA and to invent the war against China, and not to see the clear linkage between the explosions at the markets, hotels and bus stations of Iraq, India, Israel, Egypt, Pakistan etc... It is all CIA, and Muslims are only the victims...

The cowardly bombing in Delhi
Terrorist cowards kill innocent civilians. USA is not worried about a war with China - get serious - think - there is a massive mutual trade relationship between China and the US, plus China's huge 3 Gorges dam is an easy war target that China would not risk. This is not a Muslim act - just an act of cowardice by a few unknown hidden dissidents.

More Bush/McCain
Acts like this will only strengthen the arguments that some in the US make for war and occupation of Muslim countries. As a US citizen and opponent of US imperial efforts I can only believe that radical Islamists who undertake these types of attacks are hoping that someone like McCain will win the election and therefore justify their existence by continuing reactionary wars and occupations. It is a vicious circle being drawn intentionally.

A crime against innocent people
Come on Yosef, Those people do not have any religion. I hope this time Indian agencies will find real culprits rather naming ready made names like SIMI, LeT or Indian Mujahidin and then police filling their quota with innocent Muslim youth to calm the public anger. India is the only country in the world where Muslims are held responsible and only Muslims are investigated no matter whether the blast was in the Mosque or Temple. Condolences to those who lost their dear ones

Not from muslim brain
This cruel act cannot be masterminded from a muslim brain. A true muslim cannot harm even an ant. The immediate responsibility by an 'anonymous' group itself gives the message that the 'consipirarcy' is to put this heinous act on islam.

Raj, Give me a break. The US is getting closer and closer to India. Jobs, nuclear power deal. This is the last thing the CIA would be doing. Take this act at face value. It is what it is, Islamic terrorism in India.

No language is enough to codemn such dastardly acts!
I appeal to peace loving Indian Muslims to unite and condemn in strongest possiblr terms this dastardly act and unite behind the government to bring the culprits to justice! How genuine it may be, kiling of innocent people is never a way to express political anger. Such acts simply strengthens the hands of the reactionaries and perpetuates the cycle of injustices and violence!!
