US admits Afghan civilian deaths
The US military had claimed dozens of Taliban fighters were among those killed  [AFP/AFGHAN POLICE]

Far more civilians and children were killed in several US air raids on a village in Afghanistan in August that was first acknowledged, a US military investigation has concluded.

US officials had maintained only about seven civilians had died in the attacks on Azizabad in western Afghanistan on August 22.

The Afghan government and UN officials said at the time about 90 had been killed.

"Our investigation determined approximately 55 persons were
killed - 33 civilian and 22 anti-coalition militants"  a summary of an investigation by US brigadier general Michael Callan, released on Wednesday, disclosed.

Videos showed the bodies of 12 children, three women and eight men were laid out for burial in the village mosque the day after the fighting, the report said.

The incident brought angry recriminations from Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, and added to fears that support for the US military in Afghanistan was being further undermined by repeated cases of civilian casualties at the hands of US-led forces.

'Self defence'

But the Callan report defended the actions of the US and Afghan
forces involved in the incident as "necessary and proportional ... self-defence ... based on the information the on-scene commander had at
the time" it said.

The commander had been informed dozens of fighters were holding a meeting in the village, which led to the attack.

"US and Afghan forces did not commit any violations of the law of war or rules of engagement," the report concluded.

The lists of dead villagers obtained by Afghan and UN officials that showed that 90 civilians were killed "are unsubstantiated," the report said.

Three men were arrested days after the raids after allegedly providing "wrong information" to US and Afghan forces.

The arrests followed a police investigation into the incident after villagers said US-led forces in Afghanistan had been fed false information about the presence of Taliban members in Azizabad following a tribal dispute, according to interior ministry officials.

President Karzai sacked two senior Afghan army commanders over the incident and pledged to punish those responsible.

Tribal dispute

Locals told Al Jazeera at the time that the air raid hit a memorial service at a compound belonging to Reza Khan, a tribal leader who had been in dispute with Nader Tawakal, another local leader.

"We were holding a prayer ceremony when the bombs started to fall ... it was heavy bombardment. The whole village was on fire and about 90 were killed," Abdul Rasheed, the brother of one of the dead, said.

Villagers denied that the gathering was a meeting of the Taliban, which has been fighting Afghan and international forces since being forced from power in 2001.

More than 500 civilians have been killed during military operations by foreign and Afghan forces so far this year, according to the Afghan government and some aid groups.

So sorry...
I am so sorry for the behavior of my country. This is not what a supposed beacon of democracy should do. Our foreign policy seems to be based on the premise that we can just kill anyone who looks or sounds dangerous and hope more don't join their cause. As shown by this story, that approach is highly flawed when you can't rely on the information you're given. I hope someday America wakes up, stops trying to play World Police, and adopts a foreign policy that respects sovereignty and human life.

Arrests over civilian death.
Lacking is the word used frequently in this article.Spineless Karzai can't hold the US of murderers responsible,so he has to arrest local villagers to please the families of the victims. What a seedy world we live in.These poor people not only lost loved ones, now theyr'e being arrested under false pretenses.Karzai doesn't care as long as his bank account in VA is fattened.Karzai and his family live a lavish life close to Washington D.C.What does he care.Soon he will be replaced or dead.

Arrests
A common tactic for terrorists is to colocate with civilians, religious places...hospitals. It becomes very difficult if not impossible to surgically distinguish between the insurgents and the non combatants. It is unfortunate IF any civilians were killed or injured in this attack.

Patrick is an idiot!
Thats all I can say, all of you anti-AMERICANS have no understanding of the contribution the US has made in the last 200 years to this world. We send more aid, charity, money, support to almost every poor country in the world. We even send 10's of millions of dollars to Palestine, Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and many many more! What does your country do? What contributions has it made in this world?

There were Nazi's that were hanged at Nuremberg for less than this. History shows the Afghans will prevail.

Bush will be gone soon, thankfully
I agree with Patrick completely. Our government should not act this way. I hope that the US realizes that foreign relations are very important. Many of my fellow Americans seem ignorant of the fact that power levels of different countries change. We need friends not enemies. Senselessly killing civilians is detestable.

Arrests over Afghan civilian deaths
All parties are busy with the 2008 US presidential election. Bush, getting ready to leave, Pres. candidates are keeping their mouths shut. They do not want to comment on anything otherwise it will be taken against them. Right or wrong, they will not comment. What is right might be wrong for some other people and what is wrong might be right for some other people. So, basically, everything is standstill, upside down all over the world. Right now, it is a wait and see situation. Let's wait and see.

solve complicated problems by short cut
US and ISAF don't want their soldiers death on ground combating again Taliban, so they use air raid. Looks like easy and simple but crazy and brutallity. They kill a mouse by burning the house down.

taking responsibility
Here is ANOTHER example of where everyone wants to blame the wrong people for the actions of the Afghanistan people! The US military was acting on information provided by Afghanistan people against the Taliban which turned out to be incorrect on the part of the Afghanistan people providing information and in reality want their fellow Muslim country men dead in a tribal dispute. The Muslim world needs to get their religion house in order and stop blaming others.
