Rescuers search Pakistan blast site

Hundreds of people were wounded in the blast [Reuters]

Rescue workers are searching through the smouldering remains of the Marriott hotel in Islamabad after a lorry-bomb attack killed at least 53 people and left more than 200 injured.

Recovery teams pulled out at least four more bodies on Sunday and feared that more would be found in the wreckage of the hotel.

The interior ministry said that two Americans were among those killed. Ivo Zdarek, the Czech ambassador, was also killed in the attack.

He called his embassy moments after Saturday night's bombing from inside the hotel asking to be rescued, but officials confirmed later on Sunday that he had died in the blast.

Officials said they were worried that the building, which burned through the night after Saturday's blast ruptured a gas pipeline, might collapse.

Eleven foreigners were killed in the attack.

Blast investigated

Hundreds of armed police and soldiers ringed the scene in the Pakistani capital, while army bulldozers cleared rubble from nearby streets.

Footage of the attack

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but investigators said it was likely carried out by al-Qaeda.

"It has the hallmarks of al-Qaeda," a senior official involved in the investigation said.

"It was an al-Qaeda-style bombing and was similar to the attack on the Federal Investigation Agency office," he said, referring to a suicide attack in March in the eastern city of Lahore which left 20 people dead.

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have been held responsible for scores of bombings across Pakistan this year that have left more than 1,300 people dead.

Investigators said the bomb used more than 500kg of high-intensity explosives and later on Sunday the interior ministry released video footage from a security camera that showed the moments before a truck carrying the explosives detonated outside the hotel.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reported that rain was hampering the work of forensics teams scouring the crater for evidence.

Attack condemned

The hotel bombing came shortly after Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's new president, delivered his inaugural address to parliament only a few hundred metres away.

Zardari's administration faces a struggle against al-Qaeda and pro-Taliban fighters in the country's northern tribal regions.

"Terrorism is a cancer in Pakistan, we are determined, God willing, we will rid the country of this cancer," Zardari said in a televised address to the nation. "We will not be deterred by these cowards."

Zardari has left Pakistan for a scheduled meeting with George Bush, the US president.

Al Jazeera's Khan reported that Pakistan's new president was coming under criticism for leaving his country in the aftermath of the hotel blast.

The US administration, which is waging its so-called "war on terror" against al-Qaeda and fighters associated with the group, condemned the "terrorist bombing" saying it was "part of a continuing assault on the people of Pakistan".

Islamabad's Marriott hotel, part of an American-owned chain, was a popular gathering place for foreigners and Pakistan's elite.

Maximum casualties

Pakistan has supported US efforts to tackle al-Qaeda-linked groups, but the conflict is unpopular at home.

Resucers fear the death toll from the
blast may rise [Reuters]

Zafar Jaspal, a professor of international relations at the Quaid-i-Azam university in Islamabad, told Al Jazeera: "Since the beginning - I mean since 9/11 happened and Pakistan joining this 'war on terrorism' - the public was divided in Pakistan about whether we should be allied with the 'war on terrorism' or not.

"But in yesterday's attack, it was purely, purely civilian facilities and civilians who were targeted, so I think the sympathies which the public had are now touching their lowest [point] and people are going to follow the government policies on terrorism."

The Marriott attack appeared to have been timed to cause the maximum number of casualties, coming as the hotel was busy with families having their evening meal to break the Ramadan fast.

'Deafening noise'

Mohammad Jamil, who witnessed the explosion, said that a truck exploded just outside the heavily-secured hotel's gates.

He said the force of the blast sent the truck flying into the air and knocked him over on to the street.

"For a few seconds I was in shock and did not know what had happened. Then I remembered the deafening noise," Jalil said.

The blast, so powerful it was heard for miles, blew an enormous crater in the ground and destroyed the outside wall of the compound.

Buildings several kilometres away had windows blown out from the impact.

The streets around the hotel in the centre of the city were littered with burned out vehicles, crumpled furniture and other debris, while trees were snapped in half.

A security official said many people leapt to their deaths from upper floors as the building burned.

Islamabad hotel blast
Maybe it is now another occasion to speak out for the moral authorities at the Al Azhar University in Cairo, or even those 'authorities' in Saudi-Arabia who recently knew to judge so well between right and wrong when they condemned certain TVseries broadcasted during Ramadan because of showing 'immoral' clothing and even recommended killing the makers 'if necessary'. Maybe a sound moral verdict is more 'necessary' this time.

"so-called" war on terrorisim?
You just had a major incident in which dozens of innocent civilians have been killed and you still question who is responsible. And to those who believe this was caused by the CIA/Mosad. Just keep you head in the sand and let the adults take care of this and protect you.

Pakistan. my Country
The Aim is to weaken pakistan to weaken pakistan to an extent that the nuclear assets of the country could be taken away from it. The Fbi, mosad and the indian intelligence agency raw are working very closely with the taliban the pakistan taliban leaders, funding them, providing them with arms 1000kg of RDX and TNT in this case to somehow destabalize my home all day i have been watching news channels some calling my country a failed state it hurts u know but what can you say might is right

cowards
The bombing of the hotel was carried out by cowards. No one faults soldiers fighting for their ideals, whether they be "taliban", "western", or Arab, but to intentially target civilians is as cowardly as it gets. These families, christian and muslim alike, were eating with their families. I have tremendous respect for any soldier, of any country, asked to do the impossible, by men who stand behind, never getting their hands bloody. Find these cowards, make them face justice.

Please read between the lines
Skeptical: 1) They said it was suicide + ground assault like they said for the Bhutto’s death 2) Pakistan is in a situation where they can not stop US operation inside Pakistan. Rather confronting US, they needed public support to support US as that was the only option to survive. 3) Need a neutral investigation for finding out of who are the people and parties who canceled their meetings/appointments on that day 4)Who are the beneficiaries? Does it make support for US operation easier?

Formula Working Perfectly, Right Here
I can't see how this would help the Ta iban, because even comments right here suggest it will elicit a knee-jerk anti-"terrorist" reaction. However, I can easily see how it will help the United Hates. As long ago as the taking over of Mexican territory, the classic American strategy has been to stage a faked assault that calls for revenge. The Americans are sucked into that every time, even in Shwarzenegger movies. Works perfectly! Guaranteed results.

Pakistan Hotel Attack
Daniel: "Drone" aircraft are run by a soldier at a computer terminal hundreds of miles away. At the present time these are flying over Pakistan territory, every once in a while blowing up a house and the families inside. CUT THE CRAP! When a Pakistani says:"Al Queda=CIA", you should listen. Pakistanis are far closer to these scenes of distruction than YOU are!

America is Not Responsible
America would never do this. Why does everyone on this site want to blame America? I suppose America is the easy scapegoat because many of you refuse to face the truth. THIS ATTACK WAS INSTIGATED BY TERRORISTS, not by the CIA or by the FBI or by Mossad or by the Indians or by MI6, etc. Americans would not carry out this attack because such attacks are not a part of our culture. We feel terrible about the innocent people who lost their lives in this attack.

The "blast at Islamabad hotel" has the finger print of the CIA and the Mossad not "al-Qaeda", because al-Qaeda = CIA / Mossad / MI6 Stop lying for the crimnals or you could be one working for them.

Cooked conspiracy
I don't believe that this plan is not made by a simple terrorist, it's planned and fabricated carefully. The terrorist who planned this attack is called "CIA and FBI". I believe that they US is the one who planned all of this because they want to justify their mission in Pakistan although there no such terrorist in the country. Since when the bomb attacks began? since when the Americans arrived in Pakistan.

Islamabad Blast
Dear muslims.. Just look at the timing of the blast and the location. This is one of the series of blasts that the FBI/CIA/Mosad/MI6 planned inside Pakistan. Just recall that before and after Sept 11 2001 there was no such thing in Pakistan. The reason for these blasts is that Americans and the people against muslims want to justify there war inside Afghanistan and Pakistan. Why would Al Qaeda or Taliban target muslims of Pakistan who actually made them.WHY?why didn't they target before 2001?

Why do you people always think it's the west that cause these bombings. It's the Taliban or Al Qaeda, don't forget Osama is living in your country. People like you are a menace and should be put in jail for your sinfull words.

Pakistan tragedy and the blame game
"Tom" and Yusof, are both of you linked to al-Qaeda and/or the Taliban?! Give me a break! A huge number of American people do not trust our own government and feel very bad for so many PEACE LOVING Muslims. At least half of us never voted for Bush and his "policies", and don't trust the CIA either, BUT to cover up for al-Qaeda is dispicable! Anyone with half a brain knows they care nothing about humanity and wouldn't think twice about this kind of killing. Even the CIA wouldn't do this!

Muslim Nation
We need to step back and revisit the word"Jihad".My understanding is as individuals we seek self improvement and be better humans and muslims. When we murder innocent civilians under one pretense or the other,we are nothing but common crimminals.Seems to me the only other time that macho feeling comes on is when we abuse our females . We have mothers and sisters and looking how our females are treated is horrible. We need to start being more responsible for our actions.Murder is murder

Roots of the problem
Govt should integrate tribal areas into Pakistan, as autonomy and culture of tribalism has led to nothing but criminalization, lack of human rights, arms and drug traffiking and extremism. Pakistan has to work together with tribal elders so Govt can be better prepared to deal with border security as national security cannot be left at that mercy of disintegrated and chaotic tribes who cannot govern themselves. Govt need to promote preservation of life. Places of worship should be politics free

Neither I nor the U.S. official quoted know who did it. But, setting probably naive conspiracy theories aside, the always quick glib routine claim that "it has the hallmarks of al-Qaeda" means Washington wants me to think that, and not wondering why is naive, too. Glen Roberts, nottalkradio.com

Retalliation
Its so obvious why this occured, US is keeping quiet because this was their own fault, nope not CIA's, but when the American army entered Pakistan about a week ago and killed a dozen or two of civillians, thats what caused this blast. Very obvious retalliation, in whatever way the Pakistan people can.

Merriott Bombing
The world is horrified at Merritt bombing: I am not. I think it is a reaction to a more infamous act that made me horrified: the bombing of human beings by drones. The "civilization" that does this is finished: its might, its policy, its religion, its god. Europe, Canada and US are struggling to save their main values in Afghanistan: the bar and the brothel. By the way I think it was not gas which leaked in the Merriott fire: most probably it was booze. João Alberto Luiz, teacher and author

Blame Us
It has became a common practice by the westerners specially the americans to blame Muslims for everything. It won't wonder me if you start saying that the financial crisis you are facing is due to Muslims Terrorist or Al - Qaeda. Nothing happened in America after 9/11, but for us everything has changed.

Unity & Faith on Allah
At this critical stage we Pakistani's have to stay united.either this act of teror is done by USA or Al qaeda we have to stay united and trust Allah and pray for Allah help. we dont need any help and aid from USA, UK and all other european countries, we are able and can fight it with our own. if USA had technology, arms, trained army then not able to caught OSAMA and bring peace to Afghanistan and Iraq. Americans are behind all this and its time for all of us to open our eyes and take bold steps

Before we talk to much about cowardice and innocent civilians, recall that U.S. bombers have killed many more innocent civilians in Afghanistan as well. Why is a suicide attack against civilians more cowardly than an airborne attack against civilians? All such acts should be condemned, regardless of who commits them, or what their "true intentions" were.

Marriott gone
If the truck weighed over 600 lbs, with explosives onboard, it would have pushed through the Marriotts' flimsy security gate. The video shows a controlled explosion of phosphorus that is restricted to the cab of the truck. Security guards trying to put out the fire were pushed back by the heat of it not the size of it. The truck was in fact a flare explosion to signal target the incoming missle. The missle carried explosives making a thirty-foot deep crater and of vaporizing itself

So much death.
This is a tragedy it is an insult to Islam, the very morals of this beautiful religion, and to the over 1.2 billion people who peacefully follow it. There is so much disagreement with regards to politics, who is to blame, America, and coalitions that we forget that real people pay the price for the decisions made by men and women of power. I think it may serve the victims justice to stand back for a moment and ask ourselves 'why did these people have to die?' and 'if it's all really worth it?'
