Pakistan 'blocks' fuel to US forces

More than 20 vehicles, including oil tankers, were stranded at the border in Torkham [EPA]

Pakistan has reportedly blocked a major fuel supply route for Western forces in Afghanistan in response to a raid by US forces in northwest Pakistan earlier this week.

Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Pakistan's defence minister, said on Saturday: "We have told them that we will take action and we have already taken action today.

"We have stopped the supply of oil and this will tell how serious we are," he told Pakistan's Dawn Television.

Nato has not confirmed the reports.

The fuel supplies have reportedly been blocked from crossing through the main crossing at Torkham on the Pakistani-Afghan border near Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province.

More than 20 heavily-loaded vehicles, including oil tankers, were stranded at the border in Torkham following the government decision.

Conflicting reports

A senior government official told Pakistan's Dawn news that an order came "from Islamabad and the Frontier Corps has been asked to stop oil supplies to Nato forces forthwith".

But another official told Dawn in Peshawar that no decision to suspend oil supplies had come from Islamabad, saying instead it was taken at the local level in view of increased fighter activities in the Khyber region.

"Why would Pakistan suspend oil supplies due to increased US attacks in the region? It goes against conventional wisdom," he said.

"Torkham highway has become extremely dangerous due to militancy in Jamrud and Landi Kotal. The administration needs to beef up security of the highway.

"When we have enough troops on the ground to ensure safety of oil tankers, the supplies would be allowed to go through," he told Dawn.

Most fuel and other supplies for US forces in Afghanistan are transported through Pakistan, crossing the border at two points - Torkham and Chaman, to the southwest.

The Chaman crossing, where supplies bound for foreign forces in the south of Afghanistan, particularly Kandahar, was operating normally on Saturday.

In April, Russia agreed to allow Nato to transport non-lethal supplies through its territory and into northern Afghanistan.

Ground assault

Wednesday's pre-dawn ground assault on the village of Angor Adda in South Waziristan on the Afghan border was the first known incursion into Pakistan by US troops since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Pakistani officials said the raid killed 20 people, including women and children.

The US has not officially acknowledged any involvement in Wednesday's raid.

Pakistan's envoy to the US said on Friday the raid had failed to capture anyone important and helped fighters by enraging the Pakistani public.

While Wednesday's attack was the first known ground assault, there have been numerous air attacks within Pakistan, many carried out by US-operated pilotless drone aircrafts.

Two such attacks occurred this week. About nine fighters were killed by missiles fired by suspected drones in the northwest on Thursday and Friday.

General Tariq Majid, chairman of Pakistan's joint chiefs of staff committee, said on Friday that cross-border strikes would alienate ethnic Pashtuns.

The US has claimed that al-Qaeda and pro-Taliban fighters live in sanctuaries in northwest Pakistan's ethnic Pashtun tribal areas, where they organise attacks in Afghanistan.

US Raid in Pakistan
As a U.S. citizen, I am appalled that my country has violated the national sovereignty of yet another country in the in that region of the World. There are also a number of allegations that US sponsored raids are also occurring with in Iranian border regions. This is belligerent behavior and a clear violation of international law. I am saddened knowing that if we continue to sow these type of seeds, eventually we are going to harvest a very bitter crop.

Attacks on Pakistan territory
I have said it more than oce:the USA are too powerful even for their own good.It is time that the USA were broken down into their component parts, that is,their states, many of which,California, for example, have thriving economies and good easily prosper outside this iniquitous union. America is the core fo the axis of evil, even if they do wish to be so. Absolute power, this is almost a platitude, corrupts absolutely thus the USA have been corrupted by their own power.

Pakistan blocks fuel
The United States is completely justified in such an attack even if it violates Pakistan's sovereignty. Pakistan is corrupted by the insurgency within it and the government of Pakistan is so incapable of dealing with its own issues, meanwhile, NATO is pursuing an international threat. In this instance NATO is certainly justified. NATO should respond by removing any obstacle Pakistan has positioned and continue its operations. An unstable nuclear weapons possessing nation is in no ones interest.

Pakistan/middle east region
Take this how ever you want, the longer we stay there fighting, the more terrorism we are going to breed, that's what these cowards do, they only way to beat them, is to repeat the way we attacked Japan, I say pull all our forces out and turn the entire middle east into glass, send men there in radiation suits to pump our oil, and in 100 years we can start moving in

Pakistan blocks fuel to US forces RE: Robb Rasco & brent
The ignorance and arrogance reflected by your comments is the reason why there are insurgents as the USA likes to call them. Invade other countries, kill innocent civilians, destroy democracies...eventually it will come back and bite back. But your arrogance blinds you and you think its about having balls. Pathetic!

this is some cheap politics like the criket game,it's funny that they block the supply route for Western forces in afghanistan, but why don't they block the supply route for the taliban for the past 7 years???? i guess that will be a victory for the afghan's if they do that...

Sean i feel pity on you, i would just request you to look back into history go further 20 years back and remember those whom we call Talibans and Alqaeda and all such terrors were the most honorable islamic militants whom the americans licked the feet to attack russians on the afghan land. Sooner the russia was broken the islamic militants turned out to be terrorists.... bcoz ur US govt felt farting....

USA Relation with Pakistan
I found that the Pakistan relation with USA as Slavery. Pakistan should back from that kind of relation. It is not your business to kill civilians in any countries by the name of fighting against terrorism. So, Pakistan should teach USA some thing more than the blockade of oil supplies to US led forces.

Pakistan blocks fuel to US forces
The majority of the negative commenting on the issue is from NATO supporting countries. If you are discontent with NATO or your own countries involvement, pack up and go live with those you support. This questions your own judgment and other countries ability to keeps its tribulations contained. No one appears disconcerted when the US send billions in assistance to these countries. Solution keep your troubles with in your own borders and stop asking for assistance and all will be well.

RE: Sean@Good for the Cowboys!
It would've been better idea to do some googling before exposing ur shallow brain on a public forum. Taliban now are the heroes US celebrated/supported in 80s to melt Russian federation. I hope u can share this knowledge with other fellow Americans who flunked history lessons. Also, since the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis, how come Afghanistan, Iraq gets invaded? Are u all really bad at geography in the US and even Pentagon? I excuse Bush as he comes from Alaska ... lol

Pakistani Fuel Blockade
America is the land where dreams come true, how else do you explain an A** for a president. This isnt the first time the states have attacked a soverign country, and it will not be the last. Once other countries learn to say no, like Russia has then the world becomes a level playing field. America - GROW UP, countries do not readily ask for your help, you creat the problems and happen to look like the saviour when in fact you create the problems. ENOUGH

pakistan blocks fuel to US forces
Pakistan cant get anything by stopping fuel supply. cause it is the first country who set the beast called Taliban free in its own land without calculating what could be result. It has occupied a large Part of Kashmir illigaly from India since 1947. Till date It is contiously sending muslim militants accross the border of India to make a bloodbath of Hindus. It never recognises the soverignity of india In Kashmir. It made Afghanistan bleeding. Now it is its time.violation of its border is obvious

Nations of the world should act against these selfish acts by military armed superpowers, why should they be crossing oceans to come and terrorise civilians of other countries while their own citizens watch movies and play casinos back in their own homes, while the military forces maim women, children and innocent men... these are savagely attack and any attacks should be challenged

It is about time that other countries start doing something about the USA doing what and where they want! They cross boarders under "rules of engagement", but when another country does it they jump up and down, DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO !!

Long Live Democracy
This is the first time in many years that I am proud of something that the Pakistani Government has done. Had this been the dictatorship of Musharraf, he would have hushed everything by saying that the assault was by Pakistani troops and not US forces. No wonder the US want dictatorship for other countries so they are easy to control. If the US strikes again, the second border route should also be closed.

Blocked or Secured?
Just wondering if this is democracy to ridicule own masses by false claims of diplomatic retaliation. Pakistan might have stopped these tankers to save them from the evil-fighters who have strong hold on the roads beyond Khyber Pass, I can bet my entire salary on! I will be convinced of Pakistan's sovereignty if those US/NATO cowards were captured/shot down by Pakistan Army/Air Force. US has killed millions in response to WTC's 3000+ fatalities, how many more lives u'll like to be ruined?

Good for the Cowboys!
Yawn! How cowardly and boring are so many of these replies. Pakistan can't even control it's borders and here they are throwing a tantrum because America attacked a den of baby murdering Muslim thugs. Lets try to keep some focus here and remember the kind of people that inhabited Afghanistan prior to America attacking them. They were called the Taliban, close FRIENDS of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Talk about keeping bad company.

oil blockade.
It would be interesting to see some explosions in this convoy of oil tankers. If it is true the Pakistani govt is blockading this convoy to get to it's destination. Then just blow each and everyone of these tankers and see what happens. At least the US of murderers will stall and not kill any women and children for a few days.I hope that is the case.Pakistani govt should be praised for this.I wonder what Zardari has up his sleeves, the new puppet of the US and UK.The military has a different agenda.
