Civilian deaths in Pakistan attack

Haqqani was the apparent target of the attack in Miranshah on Monday [GALLO/GETTY]

At least 17 people have been killed in a missile attack on a Pakistani village near the Afghan border, witnesses and officials say.

A religious school founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a Taliban leader, was the apparent target of the attack on Monday near Miranshah, capital of North Waziristan.

Witnesses said two unmanned aircraft fired six missiles at the school and nearby houses.

Doctors reported that more than 20 wounded - mostly women and children - were taken to Miranshah's main hospital.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder said: "It is not the first time that the madrassa [school] was targeted. In the past, [Pakistani] special forces have gone into the madrassa looking for Haqqani."

Sources have confirmed to Al Jazeera that Haqqani and his son Sirajuddin were not present during the attack, and were most likely in Afghanistan.

The school had been closed after previous attacks in the area. Security sources told Al Jazeera that only three foreigners had been inside, confirming they had been killed.

Witnesses said around 17 bodies were pulled from the rubble of the collapsed houses hit in the strike, and more were expected to be found.

Haqqani is a well-known Afghan leader who served as defence minister during the US-led invasion in 2001. He is also a veteran of the Afghan war against the Soviet invasion in the 1970s and 1980s.

'US-led' raids

Monday's raid is the fourth suspected cross-border strike in the rugged tribal region by the US in almost a week.

US commandos carried out a brief ground assault in the neighbouring South Waziristan region on Wednesday in what was the first known incursion into Pakistan by US troops since 2001.

Pakistani officials said 20 people, including women and children, had been killed in the attack, which drew a furious response from the government.

A day later, four suspected Taliban fighers were killed and five wounded in a missile attack in North Waziristan, believed to have been launched by a US drone aircraft.

Intelligence officials and witnesses said five people had been killed in another suspected drone attack on Friday but the Pakistan military has denied it.

US Led Raids
With regard to NADAR. He states that "it must be a war against all Islam and muslims" Correct me if i'm wrong but who admitted to bombing the world centre, the pentagon, madrid train station, London, Islamabad, Baghdad, Algiers etc, it was Islamic fundamentalists. Trying to cause a religous war, between christians and muslims. I think NADAR has forgotten this very important fact.

How can the US attack Taliban on Pakistan soil?
They are waging war on our troops and then seeking refuge within the tribal regions of Pakistan. All I have to say is, "It's about time." Also, this war has just gotten started, and it's not about Islam, it's about putting an end to the Taliban and Al Queda. I promise you now, if Pakistan continues to sit on it hands and do nothing, then the US will continue to actively seek and destroy the enemy within their borders. No excuses. No regrets.

US raid in N. Pakistan
Fantastic. They should have raided the border of Pakistan long time ago. Musharrif, how ever it is spelled, was a double player and took billions from the US and gave nothing back in return. Blast the taliban and AlQaeda out.

Oh yeah bloody fantastic!
Utter stupidity yet again, how can u attack inside a sovereign country without engaging local forces who's more capable then US-potent forces in their track record of warfare. What did US achieve in this raid? blood of women/children? feels good huh? Guess what u've just create another batch of suicide bombers with this raid and will keep doing so with every raid in which u kill innocent civilians. Result, US'll be more unsecure then ever. These tribal have never been defeated in 6000 years

To Emma
Emma, did you even read this article? They killed civilians, not Haqqani the presumed target who wasn't even in the country. It's a little difficult to "blast the taliban and al qaeda out" if they're not even aiming their bombs properly.

To Emma
So you "think" it's fantastic that the U.S. has attacked (again) inside Pakistani sovereign territory and again killed innocents? The Taliban and Al-Qaeda should be blasted out? How on earth can you tell the difference, when all the able-bodied men of the country will rally to fight against the American aggressors? Emma, just because you're American doesn't mean you are the good guys !

Congratulations!
Congratulations US and Govt of Pakistan you have helped created another briggade of suicide bombers. The womens and childrens are killed in every missile raid that they do but they dont realize the longterm consequences that will escalate the situation further worse.

Civilian Deaths - Pakistan
Emma - are you for real. I am all for patriotism, but not for hypocrisy. Americas policy is shoot first, question later. Do us all a favour america, stay home, the world would be a better place if you are not constantly harassing it causing problems. Axis of Evil start and ends with you. Innocent women and children have died. I do not think comments like Emmas do any justice to the educated in the states.

Raid
Technically Pashtunistan is all Afghan land. Pakis use the occupied region as a buffer zone. The Pakis like to flood the Pashtun regions with terrorists that they ship from Arabia. The real problem lies with Islamabad the number one sponsor of terrorism in Afghanistan and Pashtunistan. If you want the war in Afghanistan to end NATO should go and burn ISI HQ down and the U.S. should stop blindly funding the Pakis.
