India PM warns on religious hatred
Singh lamented "the assault on our composite culture" [Reuters]

India's prime minister has said that increased religious and ethnic tensions are threatening the country's social stability and blamed those "encouraging" hatred and violence.

"There are clashes between Hindus, Christians, Muslims and tribal groups. An atmosphere of hatred and violence is being artificially generated. There are forces deliberately encouraging such tendencies," Manmohan Singh said on Monday.

Against a backdrop of religious unrest in eastern Orissa and tribal clashes in southern Karnataka, Singh said the violence threatened India's proud "inheritance" of a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-caste society.

"Perhaps the most disturbing and dangerous aspect today is the assault on our composite culture ... we see fault-lines developing between, and among, communities," he told a conference of chief state ministers in the capital, New Delhi.

In August, at least 35 people were killed in Orissa after the death of a hardline Hindu priest and four of his followers sparked violence between Hindus and Christians.

Indian Maoists claimed responsibility for killing Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, saying he was forcing tribal people to reconvert to Hinduism.

They also claimed that the state government had "made it look like Christian groups [were] responsible for the attack".

But Hindu hardline groups rejected the Maoist claim, saying Saraswati opposed conversions to Christianity and his elimination could only benefit Christian missionaries active in the area.

In India's northeastern Assam state, 50 people were killed in clashes between Muslim migrants and tribal groups earlier this month.

Curfew imposed

The prime minister's warning came as police imposed a curfew in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh two days after the latest clash between Muslims and Hindus which left three people dead.

The country has also been rocked by a series of bomb blasts targeting major cities this year which killed more than 100 people killed.

A home-grown Islamic group, the Indian Mujahideen, claimed responsibility for the attacks in Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and New Delhi, saying they were in revenge for attacks on Muslims across India.

Singh said in his speech that "there can be no compromise with terrorism, and terrorists have to be dealt with firmly".

"We need to meet today's mindless violence with the requisite amount of force but must also ensure that this is tempered by reason and justice which is the normal order of governance," he added.

India, which is majority Hindu with a large Muslim minority, is officially secular.

India PM warns on religious hatred
I speak from a relatively privileged perspective - ie the UK. But it seems to me that until the developing nations leaders are made to put a high priority on the non-religious, real education of the mass of the population, there will always be those who will be able to exploit ethnic and religious differences to solidify and enhance their own social and economic standing in their communities.

Secular India
All Congress leaders should be made aware of this opinion of the prime minister. There are few elements within the ruling congress who follow the divide & rule policy of the RSS & its associates. Otherwise India is not on the path of progress, if it follows this policy which is being spread by few selfish Indians.

Secular state ?
India came into being with the slogan of SECULARISM & that what the Great Gandhi believed in as well.Dr.Manmohan Singh is undoubtedly following the footsteps of the past leaders and in accordance with the congress's manifesto, fair enough. But what about the fanatics & extremist hindus ,who are bent upon atrocities like burning churches, demolishing mosques & harming other religious monuments. This is on rampage in India now & is rather increasing to become irrepressible to disintegrate India !!!

Indian PMs Duplicity
Singh said in his speech that "there can be no compromise with terrorism, and terrorists have to be dealt with firmly". But as a Sri Lankan, I am surprized that Singh and his national security advisor Narayanan are calling for SL troops to halt offensives against the LTTE, which is as per US and EU, one of the worlds worst terrorist organizations that are banned. It seems Mr. Singh will not hesitate to support terrorists when they are keeping their future economic competitors in ruins.

ManMohan Singh A true leader
Being an Indian we are proud of our Leader Dr. Manmohan Singh . We know what he did for India and we have full faith on his vision for the country. Its only his vision for the country which helped india to rise high and actually make other asian countries jealous of India's progress. Please try to understand his message .. all he wants to say is that dont fight because of religion conflicts but infact live in harmony with each other and give the whole world an example of truly secularNATION

Just a mere puppet!
Singh is not the king, nor he supposed to be either! Since he has been the PM, he has not been able to manage the simple aspects concerning the basic needs of the nation, consequences of which are seen now. He is just a puppet since he was 'throned' for the job and has managed only to act like one. God bestow this king with some powers! He is pretty much hypocrite in saying that the hatred is artificially imposed. At some point every Indian has known or exercised hatred. Singh is running away!

Well I dont understand why people dont understand this simple thing "Our Leaders dont care about us". Now lets just analyse what is going on throughout the world. Every major conflict involve Muslims. I will just share one simple thing that I heard from a lady in a documentary. "when we see a group of people acting in a violent way then it does not mean that they are more violent then any other group. its just that there is something wrong in the treatment of these people".

Indian PM Warns of Religious Hatred
I agree with Mr. Singh, PM of India. I do not condone the path of violance to advance social and economic agenda in any society for any minority. In 21st century of advanced communications there are other peaceful and effective ways to convey grievances and get results. A strong and prosperous india is in the Interests of all its neighbours including china. A Prospedrous india will certainly bring prosperity to all its neighbors too. I agree that India must renounce LTTE terrorism too.

Indias Failure
Continuing marginalisation of the poor from access to education and opportunities will continue to breed the fanatics and opportunists. India should focus on wealth distribution towards generating opportunities in education, health and business rather then focus on its artificial fear of engulfment from its neighbours. No point being rich and strong when all around you are starving and living a meagre existence
