Rebel village in Sri Lanka 'seized'

Sri Lankan government troops have seized a strategic village from separatist Tamil Tiger fighters, bringing the government closer to capturing the rebels' de facto capital in the north of the country, the military has said.

The battle for Vannerikulam village, west of the rebels' capital, Kilinochchi, was challenging because the rebels had erected massive earth barriers, the military said in a statement on Monday.

It said the capture of the village on Sunday could ease the military's march towards Kilinochchi, which has housed the rebel headquarters for the past 10 years.

The military did not release any details on casualties from the battle, and it was not possible to contact rebel officials for comment because communication lines to the territory had been severed.

Government troops have made dramatic progress on the northern fronts in the past months, seizing a series of rebel bases and chunks of land.

Stiff resistance

But the rebels have offered stiff resistance as government troops approach the edge of Kilinochchi, 330km north of Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital.

The government earlier this month said it was poised to capture Kilinochchi.

That drive, however, could take longer than anticipated with the rebels digging in, analysts and military sources say.

"Troops operating in the south of Kilinochchi are making progress, though they have not shown a rapid progress within the past few days," Ranil Wijayapala, a defence analyst writing in the state-run Daily News, said.

"With the rapid advance last month, the military is also forced to tie down a lot of soldiers to protect areas newly captured from the Tigers," a military officer, who declined to be named, said.

"The Tigers won't be able to hold Kilinochchi for too long, but they can delay the fall."

The government has vowed to crush the rebels and end their 25-year campaign for a separate homeland for the island's ethnic minority Tamils, who have suffered marginalisation by successive governments controlled by majority ethnic Sinhalese.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far.

History will be re-written and war analysts who claim that terrorism cannot be defeated by war will have to look for better words. The SL Army has advanced significantly, which was not experienced since the war started.

The reality is Tamils determination for homeland will never end. Tamil Tigers cannot be defeated ... their leaders are replaceable and insurgency will continue to exist for a very long time we have seen the continuous suicide attacks. As for “hothead007” yes majority of Tamils are Hindus, however there are lot of Muslims and Christians in the rebel movement. This is not a religious struggle but a freedom struggle! Look at Pakistan today, Can terrorism be really defeated?

hothead007 Pakistan 20/10/2008 - Your comments are wrong. About 2.5mTamils live in SL.Out of this less than 200,000 live in the LTTE area.Less than 10,000 are LTTE.Rest live with Sinhalease ,Muslims and other minorites .All of them are a mixture of Hindus,Buddhists and Catholics. Hindusm has nothing to with the problem.Prabakaran is not a Hindu. Tamils are a peace loving people wanting to share the life with others. Problem creaters are a brain washed bunch of terrorists.

what kind of war SL govt is trying to win. May be they think they will wipe out LTTE. What next, what abt the aspirations of Tamil people there, they have been living there as a second class citizens for generations, solve that issue, try to bring equality, then see no more LTTE will be there. It is shame that The Govt is fight its own population due to its past mistakes. How can it say People like Karuna will not change again? Lets wait and see. Long LIve World peace. To down with war,

You have replied with your personal openions and interest and not focus to actual problem. There is no link with ongoing battle and the ethnic issues in sri lanka. The war is purely against terrarisem which any person on this earth will accept except terrorist. Militory has cleared eastern sri lanka and handed over power to the tamils for them to win their rights independently. Similarly this attempt also to crush LTTE completely and libarate tamil sri lankan from terrorist and give them freedom

LTTE represents onlt the aspirations of Tamils. The Sri Lankan governments have not come up with a political solution so far satisfactory to Tamils. Though the Government claims this is terrorism it is actually an ethnic war.

What do you think as the solution ? To give away a half to prabha or negotiation to divide power ? LTTE never come for negotiation for division of power othar than asking a half of the country. Do you think Is prabha the leader of tamils ? Tamil people will never get their expectation untill prabha is acting ? He need only blood no matter wether tamil, sinhala or Muslims!!! Real benifit obtain by eliminating prabha, will be tamils.

ltte do not represent the tamils in sri lanka
the ltte does not represent the voice of the tamils suffering in sri lanka. Unfortunately fear, intimidation and miseducation have led many tamils abroad to mistakenly support the rebel movement. What is needed is for tamil youth to educate themselves and return home to fight for a more peaceful end to this civil war. There are alternative methods to attaining tamil aspirations tamil political parties and a joint tamil and singhalese womens movement within sri lanka are viable solutions.

Tamil Tiger
The Tamil tiger represent the interest of the Tamil community which you know nothing about. The Tamil tiger have done this before, let the great military think they've won then regain the same lands in a number of days. Keep hopping if you want but he only solution is a separate Tamil homeland.

"Kumara"
My home was partially destroyed in 83 riots (was 3 at the time), it was done by the sinhalese (thats what we were told) but the same sinhalese people saved us gave accomadation and food. Well then whom can u blame? most of them were not so lucky. Most of my friends are sinhalese, muslims and christians we have no hatred among each other. We have to look at the basic problem otherwise once praba falls their will be another praba or even worse.

Who are the real terrorists?
This is funny how it is being played ... both side over exaggerate on enemy losses and territory gained, insurgency and suicide continue to exist on government held areas. The SL government has censorship over the media, freedom of speech is fast disappearing and journalists are being kidnapped tortured and killed. Not to mention the majority of people who were killed and continue to suffer and getting killed are the Tamils ... lets not forget Black July! Who are the real terrorists?

Rebel Village seized
To AJ and those that still think there is a military solution: Jaffna fell in 95 and swift victory was promised then. 13 years ago. This is beside the point: The Tamil right to self-determination does not end even if somehow the LTTE are defeated.

Tamils has right to self-determination in Tamil Nadu. not in Sri lanka. Anyway Tamils are the only ethnic group without a country. I wonder how they came to this world.
