US air raid kills Afghan soldiers
The Afghan government has complained that US-led forces do not co-ordinate their operations [File, AFP]

Nine Afghan soldiers have been killed and three others wounded in an air raid by US-led forces in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack came early on Wednesday in Khost, a province near the Pakistan border, in what a US military spokesperson told Al Jazeera was a misidentification.

Qais Azimy, an Al Jazeera producer in Kabul, said, quoting the spokesperson, that US soldiers had not known the Afghan forces were in the area.

A local general who did not wish to be identified condemned the attack, saying that the US forces should have known that the Afghan soldiers were there, as they had been involved in the same operation.

'Mistakenly killed'

A press statement from the US forces said: "Coalition forces may have mistakenly killed and injured Afghan National Army soldiers last night in Khost province, Afghanistan."

The statement said that a joint investigation with the Afghan government and the Afghan national army would be mounted.

A communique from the Afghan defence ministry detailed the incident: "In an international military air strike at 2am [21:30 GMT on Tuesday] ... nine members of the Afghan National Army were martyred and three others were injured."

Colonel Greg Julian, a spokesman for the US Forces in Afghanistan, confirmed there had been an incident.

"There was an incident and we are getting together with ministry of defence officials to sort out exactly what happened. A joint investigation will be conducted to get to the truth," he said.

Under Nato command

There are about 60,000 international soldiers deployed under Nato and a separate force led by the UN in Afghanistan battling Taliban fighters.

The ministry did not specify which one of the deployments was responsible for the strike.

Most of the foreign troops operating in Khost are US armed forces operating under Nato and most air attacks are carried out by US aircraft.

In a separate development, Afghan officials claimed 35 Taliban-linked fighters and three police officers were killed in an attack in the southern Uruzgan province.

Juma Gul Hemat, Uruzgan's police chief, said heavy fighting began on Tuesday and continued into early Wednesday after the Taliban launched an attack on the area.

Hemat said around 100 fighters were involved in the battle.

However, Qari Youssef Ahmedi, a Taliban spokesman, disputed the police chief's figures, claiming they had lost seven fighters and killed 17 policemen in the attack.

Also on Wednesday, three soldiers from the US-led coalition were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in the west of the country, the headquarters of US forces in Afghanistan said.

"Coalition personnel secured the scene, and the incident is under investigation," it said in a press release issued in Kabul.

Murders and more murders.
This is gotten out of hand:I mean these coward murderers keep murdering innocent women, children,Afghan police,Talibans,etc..To the US these Afghans are mere dogs waiting to be euthanised, but the animals are spared pain and anguish. The human lives in Iraq,Afghanistan and Palestine is worthless.Pets in the US are given better treatment than humans here in the Killing Zone.I can't imagine a country who boasts about freedom and equality and opportunity, just murder innocent people and go to sleep.

peace will only come when all weapons are destroyed. Let the presidents of all countries fight one on one in a boxing arena. Then see how many countries are invovled in useless wars.

Well, As Long as Theyre Killing SOMEbody
That's okay, as long as the Americans are killing SOMEbody, they're happy. It never has been important whom they're killing. They just like killing. (Among those million dead Iraquis were many who would have been your best friends. A great many.)

US air raid
An old joke from WW2. when the RAF takes off the Germans go into their shelters. when the Luftwaffe take off the English go into their shelters. when the USAF take off EVERYONE goes into their shelters. Nothing's changed in 60 years.

Lessons from World War II
In WWII it was said that when the German bombers flew over, the British kept their heads down when the British bombers flew over the Germans kept their heads down and when the US bombers flew overhead, EVERYONE kept their heads down. The US military has a fine tradition of shooting themselves (and their allies) in the foot.

Killing our own
Ever hear of CPL Patrick Tillman?? US Army Ranger – killed in error by the US Army in Afghanistan. How about US Marines killed by an American A-10 near An Nasiriyah? The American Blackhawk helicopters shot down by American F-15s? GEN “Stonewall” Jackson was killed by his own troops. Personal note: I was almost killed by US Artillery. Fratricide is not a new thing and certainly not an Afghanistan exclusive. Find out why this happened and don’t do it again.

civilian and afghan sodiers deaths.
here is the actual truth about the brutality of so called big powers and the world is still silent and taking no action. it's clear that the so called big powers like US,UK and Russia have all type weapons and supplying them to groups they support in Aghanistan and other countries. they support the bad groups for thier political and economic interests. it's so unfortunate that our good and honest or uneduacted people are used to fight against each other and these big powers could stop all this.

what really happen?
probably, if it had not leaked the truth, NATO had accused the Taliban or alqaida for committing the attack. Who knows how many of these mistakes in the past have had the Taliban as a scapegoat?

Do you REALLY know?
Have you been there? In any battle situation? Words of blame give little to prevent the cause nor settle the hearts of those who die/injured. Even to the "aggressors" who, I can only imagine, are wishing time could draw back. Our lives are filled with accidents and mis-information. You are perfect? Without fault? To give grace and compassion with anger is of oil and water to clarity.

US air raid kills Afghan soldiers
There has never been a war where there haven't be a socalled "freindly fire". Even though this is very unfortunate you will properly never be able to avoid it. I am quite sure that the US soldiers eventually involved in this incident will be the first to regret that some of their "brothers in arms" were killed. Let not this incident spoil the impression of a good work done by the Nato and ISAF forces to clear Afganistan of Taliban forces.

Friendly Fire
Soldiers who died their survivors should fille a law suit against these mistakes made by the U.S. Militaryand claim millions of dollars. U.S. filed similar suits against saudia Arabia after 911 and Libya after Panam hijacking and received money.

US Air Raid kills Afghan soldiers
For 8 years now there have been incidents involving US forces-particularly from the air. The sooner they get out of Afghanistan the better. Between US and UN they have done more damage than the Taliban and are uniting the country against them. Will they ever learn from history or are they so ignorant and uneducated.

You all assume this is the US's fault, without thinking it might be the Afghan Army didn't report itself in the area. Don't let your hatred blind you, just as we shouldn't let our nationalism blind us of errors of the U.S. Try to allow for all possibilities.

Planned mistake!
I think we dont need any clarification from the usa wotsever since they have deliberately carried out the attack in my own province. Their aim is to perpetuate violence and bloodshed in the region, otherwise 7 years a super power couldnt bring in peace..What a tragedy..and what a failure for the usa?Anyways the US will get its fruits back. They should know with violence they breed more violence, this shows how civilized is American intelligence.!!

Faulty equipment and intelligence
This is what happens when you use "Made in China" parts for surveillance equipment. It gives false readings or do not receive the "freindly" signal from the tracking equipment issued to Afghan forces. The general that condemned the attack was probably at fault for not issuing the proper coordinates to ISAF when issuing mission orders. A brak down in communication and faulty "Made in China" equipment is the root cause. US forces receive the best equipment that the lowest bidder can provide.
