Sri Lanka army 'takes key town'
The army claim to be closing in on LTTE-held territory in the north island [EPA]

The Sri Lankan military says it has captured the strategically important northern town of Pooneryn from Tamil Tiger separtists.

After months of heavy fighting in the north, the defence ministry said on Saturday that government forces now controlled the entire western coast of the Indian Ocean island.

"Troops of army Task Force One have entered the LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] bastion of Pooneryn this morning [Saturday]," the ministry said in a statement.

"Pitched battles are still going on in the area," it said. "The terrorists are fast withdrawing."

The LTTE had been occupying Pooneryn since it dislodged government troops from the main military base there in November 1993.

There was no immediate comment from the Tamil Tigers, but the movement has conceded that many of their fighters had pulled into territory in the north of the country since the middle of last year.

Iqbal Athas,  defence correspondent for the Sunday Times in Sri Lanka, told Al Jazeera that the move by the Sri Lankan army may not be very significant.

"In the context of this long-running war, it may not be that significant because there are many other rebel-held areas," he said.

"But it is worth considering now that the entire western coast is now in the army's control."

Artillery strikes

The Tamil Tigers had used the coastal area to launch artillery strikes against a military airbase on the northern edge of the government-controlled Jaffna peninsula.

The military claims that the LTTE smuggles arms, explosives and other supplies from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which is separated from Sri Lanka's northwestern coast by the narrow Palk Strait.

Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, a military spokesman, said: "We have completely taken over Pooneryn. We have gone up to the town, and control the roads from Pooneryn to Paranthan.

"We didn't find any artillery, because they must have taken those pieces away or hidden them."

Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lanka's president, gave a televised address on saturday to announce the capture of Pooneryn and the A32 main northwestern coastal road.

"This morning the entire A-32 road and Pooneryn was captured by our security forces," he said.

"On this occasion, I ask [Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai] Prabhakaran to lay down and immediately come for talks.

"The best thing he can do for the people in the north is to lay down arms and surrender."

Northern offensive

In recent months, government-backed forces stepped up their offensive in a bid to capture the town of Kilinochchi, the LTTE's de facto capital, but bad weather and Tamil Tiger resistance has slowed those operations.

"Capturing Pooneryn is very significant, but now they have a more responsible task of securing the areas captured," Iqbal Athas, a Colombo-based defence analyst, said.

"The rebels are throwing all they have to secure Kilinochchi."

The military has stopped releasing its own casualties figures in daily bulletins since last month, but official figures tabled in parliament show that 1,269 troops had died in the first 10 months of this year.

The military claims it has killed more than 7,500 LTTE fighters since they pulled out of a Norwegian-arranged truce in January.

It is impossible to independently confirm casualty figures or details of military opeartions in the north of the island as the area is closed to journalists and the two sides often give widely differing accounts.

They Feed
See. That's the problem... you couldn't say our government feed and protect us. "They feed and protect us". Until this attitude changes, even if they defeat Tamils the island will be a bloodbath, fighting with Muslims. It's true Sinhalese have only one country but they don't know how to live happily in it.

Tamil is a language
I was watching the interview between Teymoor Nabili and Mr. Donald of L.A. (Asian News) @3:30GMT where Mr. Donald does not accept LTTE losing grounds but accepts the war is limited now within Kilinochi. It is not a surprise to me as I know that there are people in Tamil Nadu who do not believe MGR is dead. Kilinochi is surrounded (http://www.defence.lk/orbat/Default.asp) it is a matter of time to place LTTE in our history books.

Please give up arms!
This is the right time for the organisation to show its true commitments to our Tamil community. Though we experienced many difficulties from number of Sinhalese regimes in the past, we should forget all those bitter memories for our innocent brothers and sisters, who are experiencing tremendous difficulties day by day. What's the point even having a separate land without our youth and thousands with many disabilities? So Anna, please give up arms and come for a political solution asap!

SURRENDER BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
In the interest of the innocent Tamils living in the north, now its time the big tiger and its cubs surrender to the Govt, to pave way for the innocent Tamils to live in peace, which is their greatest expectation. The Sri Lankan government is always at the disposal of its citizens. Now you are defeated , there is no point in holding on to guns, lay your arms surrender and enter as a gentleman, you will find rewarding results.

so what?
Killing innocent Tamils and capturing their lands is not going to give Tamils freedom. Is there democracy in North and East under army control?no...not at all. Destroying LTTE in Wanni is a dream of Mr Rajapaksha and it will never come true. LTTE will bounce back very soon and it's good for the Tamils who want their rights and freedom. If people like Rajkumar think that they are better off under SL Government and not want to support LTTE they don't really understand the problems of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

fight for your people
Dear Praba Anna you do not need to surrender. They do not have the rights to ask you to surrender. The god gave you this power for the Tamils freedom. You should win. You will win. We all with you, except some black sheeps. God bless you all.

you are no Tamil
Better off? Hundreds have been abducted by security forces and paramilitaries in white vans, never to be seen again. Thousands more were brutally murdered in '83 by Sinhalese mobs, the attrocity that forced the Tamil people to take up arms to defend themselves. To my knowledge no Sinhalese citizen has ever been convicted of a crime against a Tamil. The govt of Sri Lanka wouldn't have to "feed, educate, and shelter" anyone if the army hadn't deliberately destroyed the Tamil civil infrastructure.

Dirty war - Mahen
Mahen you are spot on. This dirty war should be stopped now. There is nothing in this world like living in peace for any man. So I think its high time for Prabha to lay down arms and save the remaining young lives. Let those youths under you to live a normal life like the ones in the east now!
