Pakistan general shot dead

The motive for the killing is not known [Reuters]

The retired head of Pakistan's army commando unit has been shot dead in Islamabad, the police say.

Major-General Amir Faisal Alvi was killed in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday by men on a motorbike and others in a car.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Alvi retired two years ago having lead the army's Special Services Group.

Sajid Ahmed, a police officer, told the AFP news agency: "General Alvi left his house in his car when gunmen on a motorbike and in a Pajero sprayed bullets at him near his house."

The Special Services Group has carried out covert operations in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal areas where the military continues to battle heavily armed groups opposed to the government in Islamabad.

Conspiracy Theory!
Jazzy: While your conspiracy theories are very hip and trendy, first consider motivations, and then stop reading spy thriller novels about exotic super-assassins. Politically speaking (I will admit I do not know all workings of modern HUMINT, and consequent action, but my reasoning is grounded in a sense of realism), neither RAW or CIA could conceivably afford the risk involved in killing a retired Pakistani Spec-Op. RAW would spark a war, and CIA must now behave to curry favor with Obama.

Own Worst Enemy
Pakistan Needs to wake up that it has ignited a war on its own soil among its own people for a stupid, ignorant and the most hated nation in the world. Hitler should be praised like a saint over these Neo Cons, what good have they done to the world that he didnt do for his nation yet he like many others is demonised by the western media. Im a pakistani, but want the outside world understand that the current and previous government does not represent the intellect and the sentiment of the nation.

Is it just me???
It seems that for most of my life – and certainly the last 10 years - I’ve looked at the news and found a report of bombs, rockets, mines, evil people killing people in Middle East, Africa, Bosnia - on and on and on. But when the dead has a name it seems to sting much more. Sorry General. You probably served Pakistan too well. Condolences to your family

Ignorance is no excuse
It's a little more complicated than just Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Most of the fighters in the Pak/Afghan region are neither, simply loyal to their tribe. People like Bigmel1981 are the reason Americans think all Muslims burn flags and chant "death to America".

This is the result of killing your own people, yes when you kill your own country men and think it OK, then be ready to get the same thing back. And please dont blame RAW or Israel on this or the current situation. The Pakistani Army and Govt were also responsible for the slaughter of bengalis and blamed the breakup of Pakistan on RAW. Sow what you reap.

Why should we include Ameirca, Isnt it America who is providing your Army with helicopters, military hardware and billions dollars aid to slaughter the pashtun Taleban in Pakistan? Its time to stop acting stupid and become real. And wasnt it the pakistani army who was supporting the Taleban up until recently. There is no point implying that the Taleban, India and US are friends when every day they kill eachother.
