Shaken residents fled for their lives as the attackers took Mumbai by surprise  [AFP]

Mumbai, India's commercial capital, is a lively and vibrant city. It currently finds itself under siege following the co-ordinated attacks, but residents say the resilient city will survive and overcome the odds.

Al Jazeera captures some of the voices:

Raju Kane, CEO, Source PR Agency
:

Obviously this attack meant to cause maximum terror. They have attacked Trident and Taj, the two most high profile targets. Senior businessmen from India, and senior MNC officials are some of those trapped there. After this attack people are going to think many times before coming to India. This is bad for the image of the country, and bad PR. This will definitely have adverse effects on the economy as people will go back on their travel plans. Australia has already put out an advisory advising their citizens not to visit India.

We are already in a economic slowdown. This attack will have repercussions on the tourism industry which is reeling from the global meltdown. However, Mumbai itself will be stunned, scared for a few days and then come out of it. We pride ourselves in not letting terrorists or anything pull us down.

Ranu Vora - MD, Avendus, an investment bank:

The entire community is stunned as the targets are very important and vital business destinations. High profile deals and decisions take place in the portals of these two hotels. Because of these attacks many of the conferences and meetings will have to be cancelled or postponed. We ourselves were supposed to have a meeting with our investors, most of whom would have stayed at the Taj or the Trident. That meeting cannot happen now, which will have some fallout on some of our projects.

The stock markets are closed today, and there is bound to be some downturn for a while, but that is bound to be temporary. This is a security issue so some business can face a downturn.

The attacks will reduce the confidence of the investors which is already very shaky because of the liquidity crunch. This will mean that the stock market recovery will be more delayed than first envisaged.

But having said that it is also true that this is not the first time this city has been attacked. We are learning to take this in our stride. This attack has not and will not make any impact on our economic fundamentals. India will continue to grow albeit at a slower pace.

Ranjit Dhuru -  Chairman of AFTEC, a software firm:

This attack was unexpected. Although it looks like they were after the US and the British citizens, it is aimed at destroying the Indian economy and our development. More than the economics it is going to have a severe effect on the polity. It will end up in hardening the attitude of the government to the terrorist and extremists which many felt was rather soft.

I worry that as this attack has come during election time it might lead to the rise of some rightist elements which I sincerely hope does not happen.

The Indian stock market is already in the doldrums. This has more to do with the global meltdown and the western investors pulling their money out. This attack might lead to a temporary setback, but then we have learnt to take such attacks in our stride. Some 15 -20 gun totting men cannot make a huge lasting impact.

I don't think the software industry will suffer as a result of this incident. Our industry has more to do with what happens in the US and Europe, and there we are already suffering. This might temporarily scare people but then such scares pass soon and then things get back to normal.

Harsh Roongta - Chairman, Apna Loan, a web company that gives retail loans:

Any such attacks anywhere in the world have to be roundly condemned. This one is unprecedented in terms of its planning, scale, manner and audacity. Although none of my near and dear ones were affected, my prayers are for those who have suffered horrendous loss.

Such attacks have a psychological cost. Terrorism has now become a part of the global landscape, and especially so for India. We have been attacked often and in different parts. Our only answer to such atrocities can be that we do not let them win. Ordinary people like me should and will go about their daily lives or else we give in to them.

Long term impact of these attacks cannot be predicted at this moment. The whole episode has to play itself out. I do know that it will have a cost, but what it is we do not know. If the situation is contained, and contained soon, any effect will be minimal. But then it has to be contained soon.

Sometimes such incidents also have a positive impact as they shock and jolt people in coming together. Having said this, the attack is bound to have personal ramifications and therefore economic ramifications. Overall, the situation is already very tentative because of the global slowdown, and this can make it further shaky for a while but after that things will settle back to normal.

The only way we can deal with them is to go about our lives and work in as usual and not let them win.

Satya Rath - Journalist:

The attacks as you know were very well planned and executed. Obviously, the intention was to show India that the terrorists can attack us at will – wherever and whenever they choose. The Taj and the Trident are big and important landmarks for Mumbai as the Twin Towers were for New York.

The attacks are certain to hit the economy where confidence is already low. Now the businesses and stock market will lose even more investors and that will hurt the common people even more.

I was at work opposite the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus when the attack on the train station began. We did not know what was happening so we rushed to the terrace to find out.

We saw two of the terrorists, and one of us tried to photograph one of them. He was also fired at, but luckily escaped unhurt.

We also saw twenty policemen trying to fight, but the situation was way beyond their league as the policemen only had 306 rifles which have to be loaded after every firing while they were facing terrorists armed with deadly automatic weapons.

Manda Mantri – Housewife:

There was carnage when the bomb went off outside my apartment. Police were everywhere. There were body parts all around, blood everywhere. We were just glued to the television, worried. Thankfully all my relatives are safe. I feel for those affected. I am so scared. I wonder what these people gain by killing innocents like the taxi driver who was killed in the blast in front of my home.

Condemnation for this dastardly terrorist act
I just heard an interview on Aljajeera of one of the terrorist holding a Jewish family hostage. They claim this attack is a protest against the acts of injustice on the Kashmiris. My question to them is if there is so much of carnage in Kashmir, how is it that in the elections that have just been held in Kashmir there was an overwhelming turnout of voters in the order of 62 - 64% approx. inspite of calls by separatists in the area to boycott the voting.

False Flag Operation
Italian Ex-President Francesco Cossiga, said: "You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force ... the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security." Cossiga was himself involved in 'Operation Gladio', a government run terror network. Deccan Mujahideen is another 'Operation Gladio'.

India's intelligence services are fools?
The terrorist has sent a letter in September for the worst attack and also there has been a series of attacks since last year. Why do the intelligence services fail to prevent this? What are the cops doing? Is there corruption in intelligence to let the country be in this situation? India needs to clean up the bribes and culprits from its forces. Make a preventive measure than [deal with] after effects.

The world has to understand just one statement: If terrorism is bad, injustice is worse. Remove injustice to eliminate terrorism.

No security - Unsecure Indians
Third class security lead to such kind of blunder... no security at our coasts, no security at borders... every part of India's internal security has been collapsed... Congress government is so defensive and so weak that they can't take responsibility for a single Indian... They shouldn't be allowed to step on the land of India... Instead of this they are controlling the goverrnment of India... It's been more than 36 hours... That we can't get out of this... We all are very unsecure... Don't know what will happen next.

Bigotry
I agree with Ammar Khalid from the UK, if terrorism is bad, injustice is worse. Something needs to be done about the injustice in the world. Here the real causes for those attacks are snowed under by bigotry. Too many people accept only one explanation: it is Muslims who did it, and that explains all. The minority who says otherwise gets tarred and feathered. An important factor in this anti-Muslimism is that people don't want to care, want to withdraw in egoism.

Terrorist attacks
Disappointing to read some muslims justifing the attacks in Mumbai or trying to hint an internal hindu hand. Just shows their head in the sand attitude. Havent they heard that the arrested terrorists are all Muslim hailing from Pakistan? Only if Muslims prevent such mulisms from hijacking their faith will the rest of the world think of Islam without suspicion. Muslims have to take charge of their religion not make excuses for such murderers.

enough
i'm getting sick of everyone constantly defending muslims BEFORE even condemming attacks. when these happen (often) every starts saying OH POOR MUSLIMS WILL BE BLAMED as if muslims are the ONLY VICTIMS on earth? muslims aren't better than others, and some are bad. This act of brutality (whose cause is quite vague) is SICK. This is JUST as sick as any injustice, and is NOT justified by injustice, because it is ITSELF injustice. Nor is justified because muslims did it. whoever did it is SICK.

Introspection required
I don't think the terrorists represent Islam. Perhaps it is time for the Indian government to look more deeply into it's homegrown problems rather than portraying itself as a regional superpower by taking actions such as destroying somali pirate boats !! I think it's the outcome of uneven distribution of wealth and negligence of the Indian government in addresing more serious issues such as Kashmir and other separatist movements, as well as the large section of people living below poverty line.

Not About Poverty
Fahim - India has many groups fighting against inequity and poverty (both nonviolently and with violent means) this attack wasn't connected... It must have been done for other reasons and yes, religious differences certainly could have been involved. Don't try and tar anti-poverty groups (or even the Naxalites) with this when trying to protect Muslims, there is nothing wrong with admitting that these attacks were carried out by Muslims, that doesn't mean they represent the Muslim community.

Violence
The answer to terrorism and if resolved will bring peace to the whole world: 1. The Palestinian Tragedy must be resolved. 2. The Kashmir Tragedy must be resolved. With these two issues resolved 95 percent of terrorism will be eliminated Lala

War on terror
Now India has got its own 9/11. In all its tragedy and desperation, let's not repeat the "war on terror" mistake because war is terror. On a day like this, the best comfort may be in imagining what courage for peace Ghandi would have given Indians and everyone else, had he lived in our day.

Regarding Mumbai attacks
Prayers to families who died in this cowardly attack by these fanatics. India is place where Hindus and Muslims live peacefully and only external agents destroy the harmony. Kashmir issue is just an agenda they wanted to terrorise. In India lots of intellectuals are fighting for the poverty issue and this has nothing to do with the issue. India is a true democratic nation and this is attack on democracy, to denormalise the hormony and growth of India. However India will grow and lead the nation.

Terrorist Attack in Mumbai
Instead rushing to any conclusion and blaming Muslims, the government should show courage to make a sincere invesigation.Especially at a time when some Hindu militants were caught for making explosions under the pretext of Muslims, the hand of Hindu Militants should not be excluded from the scope of investigation . The ATS Chief Mr. Hemant Karkare , who was instrumental in cracking the September 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts, was also killed in yesterday's attack.See who's beniftting from the attack

Indias hand in mumbai?
The recent malegaon incident in which the ATS(anti terrorism squad) did a marvelous job by starting to book the culprits under law and as expected the guys from the hindu extremist groups like VHP and bhajrang dal were getting involved. The killing of the ATS chief raises some serious doubts that did some of the pro extremist indian groups master minded the whole mumbai thing so that the attention is completely shifted from malegaon case to something else which seems to be more serious?

Mumbai has an irrepressible spirit. It will soar again and conduct its business as usual. A mumbaikar leaves his home to earn for his family, to study to make his dream come true. The local train plying to and fro plying more than 80km up and down is a vehicle of hope. If they don't board it they would loose hope. And that is the only reason the city keeps going on as if nothing happened.

terrorism at its worst
I express my deepest sorrow for the victims affected by this tragedy. This incident shows the barbarity with which some groups will act in order to destroy life and cause chaos. These type of people want to rule others, thats it. Enforcing their will is their only goal, no matter what they say. I agree that settling the Kashmir and Palestine issues must be addressed to stop terrorism. Who is responsible for solving those problems? All must give not just demand, or savagely kill.

Unpreventable attack
Terrorist can attack any nation at any time over multitude of reasons (their 'perceived' ones). These terrible acts of violence are never justified as it involves innocent lives.Often they strike when least excepted. Therefore, one has to be fair to the Indian Government.I have every confidence that they have and are doing all they can to prevent a repeat. So very easy to say that it could have be prevented in hindsight. My heartfelt condolences and applaud your fighting spirit.

Mumbai attacks
Kashmir had an election with unprecedented voter turnout in the face of a boycott call by militants, movement of common people between India and Pakistan is increasing day by day, the Hindu-Muslim divide is not really materializing in spite of the best efforts by hate-mongers on both sides, the establishment is becoming more responsive towards civil rights, giving people more hope in the system. The attack, therefore, comes as a blessing for those with a vested interest in continued hostility.
