US air raid kills Afghan civilians

Villagers in southern Afghanistan say that dozens of civilians, including women and children attending a wedding party in Kandahar, have been killed in a US air raid.

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, condemned the killings and said on Wednesday that 40 people were killed and 28 wounded as a result of an air raid in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province.

US officials in Afghanistan confirmed that a number of civilians had been killed and said that an investigation was under way.

"We acknowledge some civilians have been injured and some may have been killed," Colonel Greg Julian, a spokesman for the US forces in Afghanistan, told the AFP news agency.

'Collateral damage'

"I can't confirm numbers," Julian said, adding the military regretted every time civilians became "collateral damage" when troops tried to take out anti-government fighters.

Witnesses accompanying the wounded to Kandahar's main hospital said the dead included at least 23 children and 10 women.

"Seven women, including the bride, and three children were admitted to hospital in Kandahar," an AFP news agency reporter said.

Local residents said the attack was carried out after Taliban fighters fired on a US convoy in the Shah Wali Kot area of the province on Monday.

David Chater, reporting for Al Jazeera from Afghanistan, said he had been told by a cameraman that a coalition patrol had gone through a village and was fired on by Taliban fighters.

"As a result of that Taliban fire they called in closed air support and there was a wedding party going on in that village - there were some 90 people in a house - and the missile landed there," he said.

Grief-stricken relative

Roozben Khan, the father of the bride, said he had lost six relatives.

"I lost two sons, two grandsons, a nephew, my mother and a cousin," Khan said.

His daughter was among seven of his relatives who were wounded. The groom survived but his father, mother and sister were killed, he said.

Mullah Mohammad Asim, the village cleric, said he had counted 36 bodies.

"They bombed six to seven houses. They pounded and fired into the village from afternoon until midnight," Asim said.

"At midnight, the Americans came and they took the men out of the houses and handcuffed them. But when they saw the death and the destruction, they removed the handcuffs and told us to take the wounded to hospital," he said.

The bombing is the latest in a string of incidents in which the US military has been accused of attacking innocent civilians.

The attacks have caused major friction between the US and the Afghan government.

War crimes
Now that Obama is president, the healing can start, and the first step should be Bush standing trial for his war crimes, like Saddam did. Men from a village attacked Saddam, and he took a bloody revenge against the whole village, for which he was hung. Men attacked the USA and Bush took a bloody revenge against two countries, in which an infinitely greater number of people have subsequently died. Bush deserves to meet Saddam's fate. I'm sure he wouldn't go to meet his Maker as bravely as Saddam.

US air raid...
The attacks have caused major friction between the US and the Afghan government. I can see from here the traitor Karzay shouting: "HOW COME YOU COMPIT WITH US IN KILLING OUR CIVILIANS. WHY DON'T YOU LET US DO IT ON OUR OWN? YOU LET THE ISRAELIS DO IT TO PALESTINIANS AND YOU LET SAKASHVILI DO IT TO HIS PEOPLE IN GOERGIA. SO WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO MAKE YOU JUST ILLEGALY ARM US AND LET US DO THE JOB..." In my opinion that the only kind of friction that this coward air raid will cause between th

Civilians killed
The US just do not care about civilian casualties. Is this the "democracy" and "freedom" they are promoting? Someday, this people will feel the wrath of God.

US Air Raid Kills Afghan
Just think...if a band of moslems had bombed a western wedding, the Pope would have used another quote from another obscure Byzantine ruler to tell the world how savage and violent and evil the moslems are. But when the Western Christians do the crime, it is perfectly normal and justified. This is the logic which the Nazis used against their victims. This crime, just a few weeks after the previous bombing of an Afghan wedding in which the bride was slain, calls for moslem awakening worlwide.

No wonder the Taliban were shooting at UN convoys some time back: the US is using its technologically advanced military to kill defenceless civilians, instead of going for their adversaries!

Air raid kills Afghan civilians.
The U.S. and NATO once again prove to the world how utterly cavalier and contemptuous they are of innocent life. Especially Afghan life. Men, women, and children are executed on a U.S./NATO whim. Yup, winning their hearts and minds alright.

Another unpunishes war crime.
Once again the US perpetrates its war crimes... and again it will go unpunished. Is the world ever going to demand justice for such atrocities? Where is the UN and all those countries that cry out foul when something like this happens to them or their ally?

This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family of the bride and groom, however the American government had no intention of killing innocent civilians...how do we know that some of those family members wern't members of the Taliban? Plus, the US troops are not randomly bombing this area...it says in the article that the Taliban attacked US troops, therefore the US troops responded. America isn't perfect, but nor is any other country. I am so proud to be an American!

Civilian killings
I have been in the US military, The killing of civilians is winked at in the US military. It serves as a fine example to those that refuse to assist in American efforts.Besides, what is anyone going to do about it.
