A landslide triggered by torrential seasonal rain has killed at least 39 people over the past two days in southern India, an official says.

Rescuers found 14 bodies on Monday and another 25 on Tuesday in the rubble in Ooty and Coonoor region of Tamil Nadu state, the state flood control official told AP news agency on Tuesday.

The official said the landslide, 1,800km south of the Indian capital, New Delhi, demolished nearly 300 tin-roofed mud huts.

The officer said that though Ooty is a popular tourist destination, none of those killed or injured were foreigners.

He said eight injured people have been hospitalised in the region.

India's June-September monsoon caused severe flooding, killing hundreds of people in southern India.
